A Gold Coast criminal lawyer will sue Queensland Premier Campbell Newman for defamation over comments he made about lawyers who defend alleged bikies.      

Hannay Lawyers principal Chris Hannay has asked a solicitor to issue a concerns notice to Mr Newman and Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie.

The notice relates to comments the premier made to various media outlets earlier this month.

Mr Newman was asked about a law firm advising its clients not to show up for their day in court if other bikies were also scheduled to appear.


The concern was that alleged bikies could face further charges under new anti-association laws, which make it illegal for three or more bikies to gather in public.

Mr Newman responded by saying: "These people are hired guns. They make money from people who sell drugs to our teenagers and young people.

"They are part of the machine, part of the criminal gang machine and they will see, say and do anything to defend their clients, try and get them off and indeed progress their case."

The attorney-general later said the premier wasn't besmirching all defence lawyers, and Mr Newman was responding to a specific matter.

Hannay Lawyers says it's clear the premier was referring to the firm.

Solicitor Jeff Horsey on Friday said his client would demand a public apology and compensation for the denigration of Mr Hannay's reputation.

"These personal and unsubstantiated attacks on Mr Hannay's character are being answered to show that this government must be held accountable," Mr Horsey said.

Mr Horsey and Mr Hannay will hold a media conference at 2pm (AEST) on Friday.

AAP is seeking comment from the government.

If this is the justification for the slander, then I wonder if the local Woolies will soon be getting a dose of Newman's bile.  Surely their bikes are registered with the proper authorities, which makes the QLD government make money off them too.

What a joke.  Maybe if they can't prove they are guilty (somehow, seeing as they have made it a crime to deliver a pizza) they need to get some actual freakin evidence, you know, like a real criminal investigation?

I'll back the lawyer no worries, unless some slimy pollie pasts a law negating the current defamation laws.

Newman went way beyond what any unbiased arbitrator could ever consider fair commentary.
He's ferked, QLD taxpayers will no doubt be paying into this lawyers account, just like the much demonised bikies.

It appears that he is not wrong.


Any law that means that a group of 3 people meeting for a coffee in the morning could be arrested and locked up for 25 years is a bad law, I don't care if they are even car salesmen.

You can take my word for it as well...............it is just............umm..............it happened yonks ago.

The bikie laws are ridiculous and Newman has gone way over the top in his hysterical efforts to defend them.

If he does end up in court no doubt the good people of Queensland will pay for his defence and any damages awarded.

Yes, that is correct.  There will be an indemnity privilege they can claim, for sure.....even though their (no doubt) defamatory comments were made outside Parliament.

It's just another nail in the coffin.  Just keep your eye on the Redcliffe by-election tomorrow, caused by the resignation of a disgraced Newman soldier, and add onto that just about every event of political relevance here since Newman was elected.

If his seat was up for grabs tomorrow, he would be gone, just like LNP representation in Redcliffe will be gone........tomorrow.

Yes, Redcliffe should be very interesting.

how do you even know if they are good guys or not?

Do you base it on what a politician says? Cause we all know how honest they are  :D :D :D :D

I'm not a fan of lawyers, they are nothing but leeches on society, but even a lawyer rates higher than a politician

Redcliffe should be interesting. Very interesting.

I hope the judge throws this out. You can't defame one specific person when speaking about a profession in general terms. The comments were not personal or directed at any one person. "These people" were the words Newman used. If he'd named this lawyer specifically, that would be a different story entirely.

Less than a month ago actually, about the time Newman made the anti lawyer comment. The courts won't play the Newman game so he had a cheap crack at the legal fraternity.

Queensland police can't prove Victorians are bikies

The men were granted bail in the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Thursday after the Crown said the case against them wasn't strong.
The men said they were members of the Comancheros bikie gang until July 2012, but then left the group and have had no contact with them since.

The men were on a family holiday on the Gold Coast at the time of their arrest. They had dined out with their partners and children and were walking towards an ice-cream shop when they were stopped by police.
