Title: Phone and Internet advice
Post by Winston Smith on Feb 28th, 2014 at 3:07pm
I am looking at upgrading my phone and internet. I am also looking to discontinue my Foxtel subscription. I am considering abandoning phone line rental in favour of Naked DSL. I am also looking at converting from fixed line to wireless internet access. I have been looking at the various plans iinet are offering. I don't know a whole lot about it though, so I am posting this to pick your brains.

I don't make a lot of calls on the land line, mostly local and mobile with the occasional national and international call. I have a Vodafone mobile that's not on any plan, which I buy credit for and mainly use for texting and emergency calls.

I haven't done a lot of downloading from the internet in the past. The entertainment fuction I have most used it for is playing online games. I am losing interest in games now, with an increasing interest in downloaded entertainment.

The Bob2 modem that iinet offers is a modem with a wireless router and handset. I noticed that iinet offers free local and national calls with their Naked DSL service. I have noticed there are independent VOIP providers that include international and mobile calls. I am thinking of setting up Skype for international calls.

I am mainly wondering if I can easily set up Skype to work through a Bob2 modem and whether Skype can be used to call mobiles. Can anyone suggest a solution?

iinet home plans

residential voip plans

Check out the Whirlpool site under the iiNet Discussion area.  Search to see whether the question has been asked before (probably has) or ask away.

Thanks, but all I got from there so far is 'naked DSL isn't worth the headache', whatever that means.

I know someone who runs the internet through their optus pay tv cable, it is faster than ADSL2 with no phone line rental.

See if you can use the foxtel cable for Internet, you may need to upgrade your modem.

If you have internet account and long term use with optus/telstra they will usually send you a new free modem to upgrade, just remind them you have been a good customer.

You can only get ADSL with naked DSL, not ADSL2+, so if speed is important, which it would be if you're playing online games, don't go naked.

I have considered it.

Whenever I've looked into it in the past, it's always been comparatively expensive. I've decided to scrap Foxtel anyway, I can get my sport from other online sources.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't realised that.

I've scrapped the idea of Naked DSL anyway. I can still bundle VOIP onto my broadband connection. Do you have any idea how wireless internet compares to fixed line for gaming speeds?

Wireless can be a little temperamental, but stacks up fairly well, especially if you've got 4g in your area.  We will see an increase in 4g when the 700mhz spectrum comes available (formerly carrying analog TV signals) from july 1st, so it will be improving soon.

It really depends on how far from the excahnge you are, as to what sort of consistent speeds you can get from a fixed connection.  You can check your proximity here:

Sorry I meant fixed copper line to the home ADSL2+, broadcast from a wireless modem around the house. The room I'd be doing gaming in would be several walls and open spaces away from the modem.
