Title: Threads being ruined by the one-liner jockeys
Post by Herbert on Mar 10th, 2014 at 6:36am
Thread after thread is being turned into walls for graffiti taggers with their one-liner tit-for-tats.

Subjects that could be explored are simply being trashed to the point where it's pointless submitting a thoughtful post because the Usual Suspects are far more interested in continuing to sledge each other.

There's a desperate need for a Flaming thread. When a freight carriage catches fire they shunt it into a siding and let it burn. That's what's needed here.

Worse than just a one liner is a quote of a dozen or so posts followed by a one liner. By the time you scroll through these massive quotes to find the new post - there's only a few insulting words.

What a waste of cyber space. It's laziness on the part of the poster not to sift out the post they're actually responding to and only quote that.

They are annoying, but that's the idea.

If no one responds they might slink off to some other forum.

There will be no "flame war" threads.

The member run boards are supposed to take care of this, by allowing members to set higher standards for debate.

Are members allowed to have more than one dedicated subject?

Maybe the YaBB software has an option to stop multi-quoting?

That way only the last quote would load.

I have noticed people selectively picking out a line of a post... so when you read it you think its the whole post..if you get my drift..

it irks me when I get challenged to answer why did I say this or that...and its obvious they havent read the whole thing..so everything gets twisted and changed..in a way it wasnt meant too.. and can cause trouble..

either way it comes down to good manners.. somethin g we seem to be losing in the progressive world we live in.. no one has time for good manners.

I'm one of those culprits, but it's not meant to offend anyone. Often only a line in a post needs responding to and anything else is just clutter. Some people might do it out of spite.

Most of the members here have good manners Cods. There are a few exceptions of course who just like upsetting people to get a bite out of them. I fall victim to that regularly, but you get used to it.

Are absolutely ridiculous and misleading thread titles included in the "one-liner jockeys" category, because sometimes one line responses are all that's required when people post dross, or start threads with stupid titles?

Is there an easier way to do that than manually deleting the unnecessary text? I only attempt that when the allowed number of characters runs out, but it can be a frustrating exercise. If you mess it up by a single character, the entire thing becomes gibberish. :(

The problem I see with one-liners is that they begin a whole subsequent series of nothing but tit-for-tat one-liner responses.

There's nothing wrong with 'one-liners', per se, as long as these don't dog-whistle a whole pack of graffiti artists to arrive at the thread to continue this trend ad infinitum.

It's blissfully simply if you start the deleting process from the bottom of the quotes ~ and work upwards.

If you're having a problem with this ~ then no worries, Winston. Just Carry on Regardless.

There's no way I'm doing that manually to satisfy your OCD sensitivities. Technology should be intuitive and serve the user, life is not here to imitate art. :)

Don't you agree it should be easier to use though? This is my beef with science and technology, it never makes things easier for people. It makes it easier for people to make things hard for you, unless you pay them a fee to mitigate the artificial barriers.

Yes - there's a very easy way to do it. When you reply to a thread and the Post Reply box comes up - scroll down the page to the post you want to reply to.

Highlight the whole or part of the post you want to quote and then click on the little box called "mark and quote" on the top left hand side of the same post. You'll see it next to the poster's nick

It will then appear in the Post Reply without all the accompanying rubbish.
