Title: Aircraft activity over Perth northern suburbs
Post by Winston Smith on Mar 13th, 2014 at 4:05am
I have a few unusual occurrences to report. This afternoon, a squadron of around 15 aircraft, flew over my house in a tight formation. Just now a helicopter travelling at seemingly very high speed, circled the sky right above my house about 6 times before flying away. I'd like to know the explaination for this phenomena.

Are you pro or anti the US government?

If pro, I'm sure it was just training exercises.

If anti, don't bother to pack your stuff, just go.

To what end is a helicopter circling a private residence half a dozen times at 2:00am? If it's not private joyriders, who is paying to have it deployed? Is this the latest in fear monger policing? Just have a helicoper make a lot of noise as a crime deterrent? What's next, low flying radio controlled, scale models with loudspeakers that look and sound like police helicopters? Or is it some kind of fly by data collection?

You are paranoid.  Thats the explanation.. Coppers use their helicopter all the time in the suburbs looking for crims.

Might have something to do with the drones and surveillance.

So I am paranoid for reporting an observation? The helicopter circled in the same pattern at extremely high speed. How is that consistent with looking for criminals? Do you imagine guys in prison stripes and masks coming out of the woodwork in the early hours? Surely for a helicopter to be deployed, the police would have to be notified of an incident, a ground unit dispatched and a pursuit initiated. Only then, in an extreme case, would a helicopter be warranted, right?

Get used to it Winston, they won't be used just for border surveillance. One for each state and territory?????

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the Triton Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, which can remain airborne for 33 hours, would be based in the southern city of Adelaide. Yes, $3 billion dollars....crazy damn government.

A report in February said seven of the US-made drones would be purchased for Aus$3.0 billion (US$2.7 billion), but Abbott said the details of how many, when they will be bought and the costs had yet to be finalised.

Is that legal at 2:00am, it was causing a disturbance and waking people up? If it was a private joyrider, how does one go about reporting it?

I get them all the time over my place ... and it's usually the cops or careflight. Bloody annoying.

So that's meant to be the 'police presence' justifying cutting back on ground units and closing police stations?

I'm on the Gold Coast, lots of canals running all over the place  ... Funnily enough, it seems like police usually pull out the chopper up here when some villian jumps into a canal and tries to swim away from police ...

I don't know why the squadron flew over but it wasn't necessarily related to the helicopter. The squadron was just on its way to somewhere.

I can remember years ago, one of the kids at the school I worked at had a dad who was in a special govt dept, forget the name of them, but they do stunt flying and displays.

Anyway, one day they arranged to detour from their route to fly over our school and do a special display. Everyone was out there on the oval, about 800 of us, all waving madly, while they looped and went back and forth for 15 minutes, before flying off.

Now, we are in an outer suburb some 35 km out of Melbourne. I bet a lot of people looked up in the sky that day and wondered what on earth?? Why are they doing that here? etc

Now as for your helicopter. Probably police chopper monitoring traffic. We get them over our way, sometimes back and forth for hours. If there is anyone on the run, the chopper will come in lower and shine the light in the yards and walkways etc. Have had that happen before too.
But 99% of the time it is traffic duty.

I haven't seen a squadron of aircraft fying over my suburb since the official end of the Cold War. I live in a relatively quiet, out of the way suburb with no main roads nearby, certainly none near where the helicopter was flying. It flew in circles with a diametre of maybe 2km, over half a dozen times at about 40 second intervals, passing right above my house each time in the process. I can't think of any rational explaination for that, other than providing a presence or some sort of data collection.

It's not really a stretch of the imagination to assume that activity as described was a police chopper on a search. Unfortunately police choppers haven't progressed to silent mode yet..........maybe in a decade or two.......

For god's sake grow up!

A search for what? Why are you telling me to grow up? It's extemely annoying to have a loud helicopter circling your house at 2:00am. Anyway, you'd have to be an adult yourself to tell me to grow up.

I became obsessed with WW2 aircraft when I was 12, particularly Axis bombers. There was something about the exotic asymmetry, with all their turrets, gondolas and barbettes. I have dozens of plastic kits of them packed away in storage.
