The only thing I can think of is like all good comrads, they love to control others and they tend to make employment so expensive, that the workers are put on welfare eventually.

Trade unions need to involve themselves in all the issues that could affect the quality of life of their members and not just industrial matters. Issues regarding welfare would affect union members who lose their jobs (quite likely under the present government) and could affect members who are injured in the workplace.

Initially, trade unions were ALL about welfare. Well, welfare of their members at least. But the advent of the social state and the welfare structure has rendered much of their involvement in this area moot. The current poor membership levels of unions reflects this.
The world has move on a long way since the 1900s but the union movement hasn't quite made the transition. They prefer to dictate terms rather than negotiate or to be primarily involved in the welfare of their members. The current sad state of union leadership[ and its criminal activities only underlines this fact. Unions have a proud history and a place in the future, but they have to evolve or end up like the dinosaur. |

On the sites I work on, unions (mainly CFMEU and AWU) handle, organise and/or arrange a lot of the counselling work (there's a lot that you just wouldn't think of - relationship, mental health, substance issues etc). They also help with return to work for injured workers - help for families while the person is off work etc. They also provide vocational services for those injured who find themselves having to find another job path.

The judge said Williamson was in a position of power when he defrauded the union of nearly $1 million. Williamson is facing a possible 20 years in jail after pleading guilty to four charges including fraud and recruiting others to hinder a police investigation. Prosecutors say Williamson, who was already on a salary of about $500,000, was motivated by greed. The court has been told the former Australian Labor Party president submitted false invoices to the union from a company in his wife's name. Williamson's lawyers say he has apologised and taken full responsibility for his actions, noting he has also suffered depression since his behaviour was exposed. More to come. LIKE THIS GET INVOLVED ;D ;D ;D ;D |

So interest groups, including those who represent the vanishing workforce, are not entitled to a seat at the table?
Who else is going to represent the vanishing Unionist and the vanishing worker here - those replaced by property hoarders and flunkies in offices pretending to do a good day's work by shuffling paper deck chairs around? Davy Jones Job Locker |
