MORE than 600 illegal immigrants have returned home voluntarily or through forced repatriation since the Coalition declared Australia’s borders closed, The Saturday Telegraph can reveal. 
 
The figures, that until now had been kept secret, confirm that for the first time since 2008 the tide of boat arrivals has begun to turn, and the number of people returning home is now exceeding arrival numbers.

Figures from the Immigration Department show 606 people have returned or were forced to return to their place of origin since the start of the Coalition’s controversial Operation Sovereign Borders policy.

Of those, 240 from mainland detention or community detention left voluntarily, having given up hope of being granted asylum, and 168 were flown home by the government.

A total of 198 illegal immigrants from Manus Island and Nauru had also asked authorities to be returned home after realising they would not be settled in Australia.

The Daily Telegraph has also obtained Immigration Department research from last year that reveals only half of all illegal immigrants who arrived since 2008 — about 30,000 — claimed on their applications that they had come to Australia to flee persecution.

A survey of people being held in detention revealed most arrivals had sought to come to Australia because they believed the previous Labor government would let them stay.

Under Labor, there was a 90 per cent acceptance rate.

The overwhelming finding from the survey conducted during Labor’s time was that the door was open to refugees and they would not be returned.

Today will be 100 days since the last boat successfully arrived in Australian territory.

The illegal immigrant return figures suggest the Coalition’s policy, despite being labelled cruel by the Greens and refugee advocacy groups, has smashed hope for illegal immigrants coming by boat that they would ever settle permanently in Australia.

Immigration minister Scott Morrison said his military-led operation would now enter a third phase with signs that the first two phases had succeeded.

He confirmed he would now turn his attention to the 30,000 people still in detention centres or in community detention and awaiting processing.

While pleased with the border security results, Mr Morrison said there was “no room for complacency”.

But Labor never really wanted to stop the boats, not until the election was on top of them.
They were more concerned to hold the support of the Greens and the cross benches, both of which were against any serious boat stopping.
So they tried to spin several variations on the "unstoppable" theme.
And that has now been exposed for the spin that it was.

the compound, but some staff acknowledged that delays in replacing empty bottles were a

one of the buildings, but detainees do not have access to this area and said they were not
allowed to move the water bottles themselves.
In other compounds, drinking water is provided in individual 500ml bottles. Detainees in
those compounds appear to have no restrictions on the amount of water they have access to.

ABC Fact Check has also examined monthly data of asylum seeker boat arrivals over the past five years

The data shows a clear peak in July 2013, when 4,236 asylum seekers arrived. The following month there were 1,585 arrivals - the lowest number in five months. That's a 60 per cent reduction, and in subsequent months the numbers continued to drop.

This data presents a more complete picture to Mr Morrison's claim, showing the boats began to slow dramatically soon after Mr Rudd's July 19 announcement, a trend which has continued.



The researchers say the comparison period of before and after Operation Sovereign Borders used by Mr Morrison misses the point, "because this trend began back in July and there is no sign that the election of the Abbott Coalition Government has had any impact on arrivals whatsoever".

They say over the past five years, there have been several changes in the trend of asylum seeker arrivals, the most recent change being in July 2013, "but that there is no evidence of any further change in trend since the election"

I had to go check, as the claim is incredible....but yes ~ you are totally correct.

It actually shouldn't need a Rule, it simply should not occur. That said, the most basic benchmark should be the actual author of the article deserves a right of reply.... This has been facilitated should the author choose to take it up...

I said they voted for Abbott and Abbott has said all along that he wants his government to decide who comes here. Clearly, people voted for him in part because of that. Abbott has also always said he would remove the carbon tax - another reason people voted for him. You're clueless if you think people vote for politicians because of one sole issue.

Armchair Politician berating people for deliberately misleading the public.  Was that an irony meter that I just heard explode? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I'd bet he's still scratching his head wondering why too!  ;) Probably doesn't have time to scratch his head. Too busy changing the text from reputable news sources in order to make more posts based on ignorant bigotry and pure hatred. AP is a busy little beaver. Will remember that next time we post a story from the DT that shows the ALP and/or Greens in a less than flattering light!  :) What you need to remember is, don't change the text.

What you need to remember about the border security policy is this: Labor failed dismally, Coalition succeeded far quicker than anyone anticipated. It's that simple.

Well he still can, however he surely would be tired by now of people laughing at him.
His Manus Island 'non solution' introduced at the time stopped no boats, in fact not even slowed the boats daily arrivals.
His 'plan' of sending only single males to PNG whilst married males, women and children were sent to Chrismas Island and eventual resettlement in Australia was doomed and ridiculed from the start, and the people smugglers knew it.
