Title: Motorcycle riders - temporary Australians Post by red baron on Apr 8th, 2014 at 8:36am
News of Brendan Jones of WS fm fame took a spill on his motorcycle on then weekend. He had some serious injuries included fractures.
Kind of reminded me of my days in the Traffic Accident Investigation area. We used to say," there is no such thing as a minor accident if you are riding a motorbike." Very, very, very often the injuries were dreadful, metres of skin ripped from the bodies and all kinds of smashed up bones. Bike riders can count themselves lucky to survive a major prang. Of course all bike riders think they are bullet proof. But if you ride a bike long enough, you can write this in your diary right now. "I will have a major accident and I will be severely injured, most probably with injuries bad enough to affect me the rest of my life." |

Thanks for that piece of relevant non-information. I can go back safely to my life of comfort knowing that Jonesy won't be presenting inane breakfast radio for a bit.

Well, I don't know so much about 'temporary'. I started riding in 1971 as a 13-year-old, and I'm still here. No experienced rider considers himself bullet-proof, especially those who have had an 'off' previously. I believe there are two kinds of rider. Those who have 'come off'. And those who are going to. Yes, I've had mine, tossed a Honda Four up the road many years ago, and my knee seldom lets me forget it. |

El Gatto, not against motorbikes nor the riders. More often than not it's dickheaded car drivers that take motorcycle riders out. Cheers ;)

Ain't that the truth! I've had some close ones over the years where only being alert and aware saved me from some serious hurt. I wasn't having a 'go' or trying to start an argy, BTW. :-) |

Excellent experience is to be gained by riding motorcycles or bicycles on the roads, our motorists would be totally different animals if they were subject to a period of 12 months on either.

If you fancy being paranoid, psychopathic and schizophrenic. I cite poster Sprintcyclist as my laboratory specimen. He believes rectitude is acquired by sphinctoral stimulation from the seat of a bicycle. |

You'll get no argument from me on that point. Some may consider it somewhat Draconian, but I have long believed that one should be able to get a licence for a small motorcycle (125-175cc) at 16, but must spend at least a year on the bike (preferably two) and cover a specified number of km and hours before being eligible for a car licence. This, in conjunction with raising the minimum age for a car licence to 18, and driver train- ing for seniors in High School, would, I believe, have a significant impact on both the road toll and the attitudes of drivers towards each other and other road users. **Sits back, waits to be howled-down.** |

I've ridden motorcycles on and off all of my life...
they are certainly a danger ... a death trap for some, many, due to the way that they ride.. a couple of years back I covered over 35 Thousand Kilometres over maybe a 2 year period travelling the Nullarbor, Darwin and back to vic, around NSW, Tasmania.. everywhere man.. hell, I feel like going for a ride right now.. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fFHX8Oxh9o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vDQr_QkTOM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLRerLdh_7U |

Would be nice if your thoughts were implemented, drivers would certainly have much better road craft especially appreciating space and stopping distance. Since I put a set of ridiculous after market pipes on my bike, that make my bike so loud it's not funny I haven't had any issues with drivers not being aware of my presence on the road, how ever it is not nice for my neighbours and illegal in all states, go figure. Rather get a fine than get hit by a car again. |

Friend of mine has a '95 Harley with loud pipes. He's always getting pinged for them but as he says, 'They might claim they didn't see me, but they won't be able to say they didn't hear me'. Seems to work, no-one's hit him yet. ;) |

yes... I swore I'd never own one back in the day... but then the mrs and me wanted to do a trip up through the Red Centre... so we sold the Triumph Rocket III 2300cc :'( :'( :'( and purchased the Goldwing 1800cc Boxer to do the trip.. I wasn't sold originally about the idea of maybe taking a Goldy on the trip but then we took one for a test drive.. and WOW.. I was so impressed I bought one... :) I flew to Sydney to buy this one and then rode it home... I picked it up for 27K and then sold it for 33K :) since then the Goldwing Factory has moved from the US to Japan and the pricing has dropped 10K... :o |

I remember when I was young (gotta be a song title in there:P) one of the blokes I grew up with bought one of the very first Goldies, brand-new. He loved it, it was a very advanced piece of kit for the time, and with bags of torque. And, although it was 'only a 'tourer' not much could keep up with it on the road. :) :) |
