Retailers fear budget fallout

Retailers fear consumers will tighten their purse strings in response to spending cuts and tax increases in the Abbott government's first budget.      :(

Australian National Retailers' Association chief executive Margy Osmond said the industry was concerned about a possible hit to consumer confidence following Tuesday's budget.     :(

"Retail sales have been gradually growing for eleven consecutive months and retailers are concerned that today's budget will reverse these gains and erode consumer confidence at a critical time," she said.

She said an increase in fuel excise would also hurt retailers by pushing up transportation and freight costs.

Consumer confidence will definitely be eroded - that's an obvious outcome from the budget.

Listening to those people in favour of the budget today - and there are plenty of them, many of them were saying they'll be happy to sacrifice their daily cappuccino, dining out or other little pleasures for the good of the economy.

If they'd thought a little further ahead though - they'd realise the impact their looming frugality will have on business. A healthy business provides jobs so this whole austerity program makes little sense. Any economist will say that we're not in bad shape compared to the rest of the world, but Abbott & Co. are scaring everyone into believing that we're on the verge of another depression.

If the economy is in worse shape when Abbott's  first term is up - I doubt he'll get a second chance.

Yeah, well - we all know that the current government has little to no interest in the slightly higher crustees 'above' the peons down there - and in reality your average small business person is only a wage slave of a slightly higher order anyway.

Their focus is on power, control and offerings to the lords and ladies of big business... who will feel the budget pinch not one tiny bit...

Everyone knows that when people have fewer dollars they will buy less - so HTF is this budget going to  get the economy flowing and  business viable here again?  Let alone the life and lifestyle and life choices of those in real need.

Leave school kids - and get nothing for six months when you will have to do WFtD as well - in the meantime you can learn a new skill such as house breaking, drug dealing, highway robbery, bank holdup, purse snatching.. or maybe get into a university and learn economics and how to be a real thief!!
