Title: new global moderator Post by freediver on May 26th, 2014 at 9:34pm
We are considering adding a new global moderator.
Suggestions so far include: Alevine Sappho Philperth Gandalf Annie Anthrax Mantra Annie from PA AiA Armchair Politician Sprintcyclist Not all of these people have been contacted, so let us know if you are not interested. Also, feel free to make additional suggestions or raise any objections. Please try to keep this constructive. We have had to lock these threads in the past because they descend into personal abuse. If you prefer, you can PM me with any objections. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by John Smith on May 26th, 2014 at 9:53pm
i think either Philperth or Annie would be a good choice if they were up for it.
|
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by Mod. on May 26th, 2014 at 9:56pm
I have several objections. Most of them are rarely here. Sappho? When was she ever here? Annie (not even here at all). AiA ~ the bloke who is quite content to allow the most vile abuse as an Admin?
It is most relevant that you have not included me (Aussie) and a bloke like Phemanderac who has a very solid grasp of how these places need to work. I'll put it right in your face, FD. I am ready willing and available. |

Mantra fine.
Annie—did you ask her, FD? She is not a member here, unless she joined up very recently. Your list seems tailor made to have AiA made a Gen. Mod here. What a choice—he destroyed the PA board, is now here whining and moaning, accused me and AG of posting IQ’s real name—no evidence provided, of course. Oh, he helped IQ post a photo of me with text underneath saying wtte “the above is a pedophile. AiA had to post that text, proof AiA will help disclose personal information. Oh a Fine choice for Mod, fine if you want this board destroyed too, FD. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by Andrei.Hicks on May 26th, 2014 at 10:51pm
You don't half moan George.
Anyway, my views on the below list have been given. I will add officially and in public that whoever joins will get my full support. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by St George of the Holy Copper on May 26th, 2014 at 10:54pm
Every bit is true and happened as I said. Not that a draadtrekker like you would understand why those are not exactly good qualities in a Mod.
|
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by Andrei.Hicks on May 26th, 2014 at 10:58pm
If you post an insult in a language you know full well the other person speaks and understands - it does not become less of an insult because others don't.

Title: Re: new global moderator Post by El Gatto on May 27th, 2014 at 1:11am
Honestly, IDGAF, because if the place keeps going in the direction it is, I probably won't be here either
apart from poking my head in occasionally to moderate on Health & Welfare, which isn't hard. The crap doesn't seem to reach there (or hasn't yet, at least). If I absolutely HAD to choose, probably Phil or Mantra. Some of the others I don't know well enough, and yet others I know only TOO well. |

I am not about to get into a debate with anyone about your mere opinion of the past at PA. Its current virtual morbidity is there for all to see, consistent with the warnings I was giving. You attempt to demean that by the description 'whiny little forum nuisance.' Like I said ~ you are biased, and abusive.
Proof is there, embedded within your last two Posts. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by mattywisk on May 27th, 2014 at 3:58pm
I wouldn't vote mantra from what I have seen of the id on here it seems too petty and inexperienced dealing with people on forums. I have never seen annie post here at all.
My experience with aussie indicated he is too childish. Sprintcyclist seems half descent to me as well. AiA I have posted with a few times and seems like he has the experience needed. So it is AiA for me he seemed fine. The others I can't really comment on as I don't know to much about them they may be fine as well. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by hazy123 on May 27th, 2014 at 4:01pm
If you really want to ensure you have your dismal audience on ozpolitics, get alevine, annie anthrax or gandalf to moderate.

FD, This is your forum & you will make the final decision, as you have done previously, both here & on your other forum. For you & the majority of OzPol members, I hope you think very long & very hard, because there is certainly one member who shouldn't even be on your short list, let alone get the final nod. If anyone is in doubt, a look at FD's other forum will/should convince you! As I have said a few times previously, for all actions & in-actions, there are Consequences and an incorrect judgement here, could have serious Consequences for this forum! Anyway, happy judgments & Cheers! |

No. If I am appointed, it will be very simple. There are Rules posted by FD. I'll enforce them without fear or favour. That's what Mods are supposed to do. If the Rules change, then I adapt to the change. It is easy. I will not be entering people's accounts to muck around with their settings as FD has done. I am the first to admit that he and I will clash like you would not believe. But............hey........maybe it is time someone who will not lick his stamps gets a go, wot? I am no-one's 'yes man.' Give me the Rule, and that's where it begins and ends. How hard is that? |

I would be happy with Aussie - I find his postings well thought out, he certainly cops some abuse but is very civil in his replies. I also would support John Smith, Skippy, Peter from NZ and Kat. To show my thoughts for both sides, I would also support Brownyn Bishop should he apply |

Title: Re: new global moderator Post by miketrees on May 27th, 2014 at 6:42pm
YES, yes lets appoint some one that is never here.
That is how I like my forums unmoderated. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by freediver on May 27th, 2014 at 6:44pm
It does not make sense to impose any minimum contribution on a global mod. If their actions improve the site, then the site is better off for having them, whether it is a small or a big improvement. A contribution does not become "bad" merely because it is small.
On the other hand, a mod who does a poor job and tries to make up for this with being very active is going to be a disaster. If we need more moderators, we will appoint more. We will not appoint inferior moderators in the hope that lots of interference will make up for poor performance. You can make up for inactive mods. You cannot make up for bad mods. |

That doesn't make sense. You are basically arguing that a small good contribution becomes a negative contribution by virtue of it being small. There is no limit to the number of moderators that can be appointed. You can make up for inactive moderators by appointing more. You cannot make up for bad moderators. They end up creating more work for everyone else. Activity level is a non-issue. |

Pretty-much my feeling, too. Apart from the fact that I know I don't suffer fools well enough to make a good global mod, I'm happy enough just modding the Member-run board Health & Welfare, and a couple of other much tamer sites than here. And as I've done there, I believe that, to be a 'good' mod you do need to distance yourself somewhat from the general cut & thrust of most threads. It's too easy to forget that you are the referee and become one of the players. It doesn't mean non-participation, it just means you need to be very circumspect (which does remove a lot of the 'fun') or you lose credibility. Looks bad if you ban someone for something you yourself have done 10 posts earlier or in another thread. |

I did not make a poll because this is not a democracy. I value some people's opinions far more than others. For the most part, it is the people who post the least in this thread. If you have mistaken this for some kind of political campaign you have already ruled yourself out. |

I agree with you. Aussie is a good bloke. Equally, I agree that he would not make a good mod. He is inclined towards being easily manipulated by those who are not so kind as he. Aussie cares too much about being seen to be fair instead of using a more objective measure... hence his being so easily manipulated by less fair minded forumites. He has a habit of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons which tends to put others off side. Aussie takes things personally when the wrong thing is done by him and so will hold a grudge impacting his decision making abilities. He promises to 'follow the letter of the law' without regard for his capacity for discretionary authority to be applied where it is that absurd outcomes would result. He can never please all of the people all of the time, but he would try leaving him the target of attacks. He has a preference to support the perceived underdog, even if the underdog is making an ass of himself. So yes, AG, Aussie is a good man... too good for the role of mod. Too soft by halves. Let the role go to a strong willed mind who will seek to satisfy the overarching forum harmony for the greater good of the greatest number. Let Utility dictate the actions of the mod and not categorical imperatives. And for goodness sake... Let Freediver decide who should mod his forum instead of engaging in this piss weak fence sitting behavior of his. |

Moreover that there's a need for another GM. Freediver put up a list of people deemed potentials and invited comments and/or others felt suitable. If someone is not deemed suitable by Freediver it doesn't matter how many people repeat this persons name. I don't know why that's so difficult to get? |

I would like to back up FD's point here, I was made a Mod a long time ago, at the time saying there may be long periods where I do not even see the boards, as is very much the case recently. However, even though I rarely come here, I have popped in a few times, and been confronted with grossly inappropriate things, and dealt with it one on one, immediately. My contribution is small, and infrequent, but not worthless. Because I am here so rarely, I do not involve myself in petty squabbling, as I do not have the current understanding that comes with witnessing the behaviour of the parties involved. So unless I see something that unquestionably should not be here, I leave it to the mods who are able to interact daily with other members. |

Sorry I never backed your little buddy, but that's my right to my opinion. I have found her one of the most abusive people from my experience being here only a short time and watching her abuse others. That is my experience and opinion as well. That's why I don't think she has the goods to be a moderator if that is my experience. How long have you been here cods. Maybe a bit too long(in my opinion). At the end of the day it is lying to make someone look bad or paint a bad picture of them. I don't like liars nor do I think they make good moderators. Let's get back to what Freediver asked. Hey? There are 3 people on Freediver's above List that I have seen as Moderators of other Forums. Thus, I have had "experience" with them. 1. AiA has been the Administrator on PolAnimal since last September. The Administrator is voted in at PA, AiA won! He moderated on that Forum prior to that. He is an excellent Mod, very fair and unbiased. Unfortunately, AiA is an Aussie living in Atlanta, so maybe timing is off? He is the current Administrator of Freediver's "sister" Forum. 2. AnnieLaurie.Another American. Not a Member of this Forum but a mate of Jovial Monk/George & Co and an Administrator at George's HBS Guy" clone PA Forum. Annie has also acted as Mod at Freediver's PoliticalAnimal Forum. she has been know to change words in posts and delete posts that are slightly "Australian" in content. The only banned swear word over at Pol/Animal is the one beginning with a "c". 3. mantra. Dear old soul that she is. Once Upon a Time, back in the dark ages, Deepthought set up a Forum for our good pal, mantra, who butter wouldn't melt and so forth. Anyway ............ She called it Menagerie. Due to her love of green trees and animals, etc. However ... if you wrote "I think **** does a great job", it would suddenly be altered to "I think **** should be sacked" ... IF you get the drift. Over and OUT ......... Mantra is 30+ years past being an Agitator and I doubt that she ever was. Give Mantra a Member Forum, FREEDIVER ... she deserves it. |

So far, the only 'vote' has been to HAVE a 'vote'. FD doesn't want a vote, fair enough, he runs the show as he wants. However, FD did ask members to 'make additional suggestions'. People did, and many were suggesting Aussie. All I would like to see is an Open Balance of Mods. Too much to ask?? ;) |

Title: Re: new global moderator Post by freediver on May 31st, 2014 at 5:50pm
To be fair, this thread hasn't been so bad. I was worried it would end up being all about Aussie and blow out to 100 posts.
There still seems to be some confusion about whether this is an election. Not sure why. This is not an election. I am merely asking people for their opinion. Give your opinion on whoever you want, then move on. Don't come back to campaign or have an argument about it. And quit complaining that this isn't an election. |

Aussie is considered - as is any name put forward.
The point was it's not a campaign thread or election. Cods - if anyone doesn't know why they were banned. They can always ask. |

Cods was joking - obviously, but she has a point. Most members don't have a clue why they are blocked or banned. I've looked through quite a few of these "last 25 posts" and seen nothing - except maybe one tiny little swearword and the person has been banned. On the other hand - there are a whole group of people whose swearing, personal abuse, continual insults and general spamming of the threads are totally ignored. This has got nothing to do with the moderator or admin not noticing, because often they're posting in the same threads. Let's just be honest about this. Bannings are random, inconsistent and often not justified and that has to be accepted. To the members - just get on with your posting, stay within the boundaries to the best of your ability and don't question the workings of the hierarchy. |

I've changed my mind about nominating Aussie as well precisely because of that. From what I've seen he's been a victim in much of the bullying, but until this crap is sorted and everyone can kiss and make up, none of you should be moderating. If everyone could check their baggage at the door, I wouldn't have a problem with either Aussie or AiA, but I won't be holding my breath. Political persuasion also shouldn't matter. If I agreed with Andrei on just about anything political, I'd be reassessing my own opinion (he probably feels the same), but he makes a good moderator as far as I can tell. |

As a general rule you should not appoint as moderator anyone whose life is so devoid of fulfilment they yearn, they are positively desperate for the tiny power they get from being a mod.
And Aussie in particular does not enjoy a good reputation as a mod. He too easily falls victim to his baser instincts as a petty and vindictive tyrant. |

The global mod aspirant is getting better. I have been warned by PM that I am at stage 1 of a banning for breaking the rules.
I am not sure what rules an on topic, relevant and non abusive post breaks? Presumably the rule is that I have posted when Aussie has decreed I can not? Still I vote for Aussie as Global Mod and he is doing sterling work at demonstrating his modding manifesto. |

With all these global moderators - and you too FD watching the personal abuse that one person is dishing out to a few members here - including me, nothing is being done and it's getting worse. A thread was started in Chat denigrating a member - and all you did was move it off the general board to another forum. I thought personal abuse was going to be discouraged. I've reported various incidents a couple of times to the global moderators and there's been no response so there seems no point in continuing to bother them. I've seen so many members banned here for so much less. By moving the thread instead of deleting it in Chat - it sends a message to everyone that it's now OK to say whatever we like about individual members and even start threads on them with any old lie or derogatory comment. |
Title: Re: new global moderator Post by freediver on Jun 11th, 2014 at 9:16pm

Leaving the thread shows everyone what you are like denigrating members. Death and hades would freeze over if a mod grew enough balls to actually ban you for a change instead of you running around sooking about people all the time whining to global mods. The first day I got here here you were abusing someone and then me. Grow some brains and grow up for a change. I doubt that will happen. |

If you send a message to a moderator with copies to a couple of others - you don't know whether they've all seen it. A computer generated message is a good idea. They prove conclusively that they are among us, under the guise of the not-so-Liberals and the you-don't-need-to-Labor parties. It is also clear that they have a sense of humour, as they also run the greens party. Here is a video showing all of the known aliens in the galaxy: youtube.com/watch?v=6sEEPBT7pvE ~Avast~ |

Should have seen the look on her face when I told her we weren't even half way... Yes, she wanted to know if there was a quicker route. Wasn't to happy when I said 'Yes. Fly'. |
