The number of people diagnosed with HIV in Australia remains at 20-year highs.

Annual data released from the Kirby Institute shows 1,235 new cases were diagnosed last year.

The figures have been released ahead of a global AIDS conference in Melbourne next week.

They show that HIV rates have been steadily rising in Australia since 1999 and more than 26,000 people are now living with the virus.

So basically the increases are due to two major reasons.


1. More gay men have unprotected sex with each other
2. Less gay men having regular testing.


Therefore nothing to do with gay men running around infecting everyone.

The Kirby Institute last year did mention it. There was an increase in sub-Saharan populations in the 5 year time of 2002-20027 to 2008-2012 of about 66%. However, in the 2013 they don't mention the reasons why. It may be that education of these populations is increasing which means that they are getting regular testing etc. It may also be that there were such small numbers of these populations that any increase is exaggerated.

I'm sure there are many in sub sahara with aids ... that wasn't the question ...are you sure they are letting those with aids into the country? As far as I'm aware everyone must PASS health checks before they will be granted a visa

I honestly don't know what the health checks are. But I would say anyone with AIDS wouldnt be let in, but HIV positive people with low viral loads might be let in.




Corrected: I just checked immigration and they do have to have a HIV test. So I then suspect there are other reasons for the increase.

like everything we get very complacent and most think it wont be me....so why bother....

I do know women have to have test for cancer every two years..its the doctors duty to make sure they have these tests.. why isnt it compulsory for gays?? to be tested as well...its for their own benefit surely??...although I have to admit.. I do not know if it can be cured if caught early....but it seems to me it shouldnt be left to men in particular to make those decisions I thinkwe all know men do not like being tested.

A few boozoongoos (or whatever currency they use) under the table would easily get them a clean health certificate.

First of all, tests for cancer aren't compulsory.

Second, how could you make testing of homosexuals compulsory?  How would medical authorities know who is or isn't gay?

Pretty sure the women don't have to have those tests. They can say no.

In any case, it is clearly an issue with education and comprehension.

I'm with John Smith, this sounds like bulldust to me.

I was once posted to a RAAF base that had a public toilet near the main gate.     It did not take long to realise that it was a beat.    Lined up near the beat would be cars, many with kid's car seats in the back seat whilst the owners - apparently most were married men - line up to get oral and anal sex off others inside.    Presumably, they would then go home and have intercourse with their wife or partner.

Just heard a bit of it on the news.

Sounds as if the remote areas of Australia, amongst some Aboriginal communities is where most of the problem is.

I suppose it has spread more there because of the limited, closed population group, lack of easy access to medical facilities, poverty.

If you're in one of the big cities and can manage to live a sensible restrained lifestyle, I doubt you are any more likely to get it than you were a few years ago.

Ive seen the holes in the doors of some toilets and the comments written on the walls as to what these "glory holes" are for,  public toilets are for urinating and crapping in, not some perverted idea of a male bathhouse. I've never seen men hanging around male or female toilets hoping for casual sex. I've seen things written on public toilet walls though.
