On June 4, 2008, salesman Travis Alexander was murdered in his house in Mesa, Arizona. He sustained multiple stab wounds, a slit throat, and a gunshot to the head. Jodi Arias, Alexander's ex-girlfriend, was charged with first-degree murder for his death. At trial, she testified that she killed Alexander in self-defense. She was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013.[1] The murder and trial received widespread media attention.[2][3][4][5][6]

Background[edit]

Travis Victor Alexander was born on July 28, 1977,[7] in Riverside, California. After his father's death in July 1997,[8] Alexander and his seven siblings were taken in by their paternal grandmother, Norma Jean Preston Alexander Sarvey (1932–2012), who eventually introduced them to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[9] Alexander was a salesman for PPL - Prepaid Legal Services (later renamed LegalShield), a legal services company using multi-level marketing.[10] He also worked as a motivational speaker for PPL.[11]

Jodi Ann Arias was born on July 9, 1980, in Salinas, California. She and Alexander met in September 2006 at a Prepaid Legal Services conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. On November 26, 2006, Arias was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Alexander.[12] Alexander and Arias began dating in February 2007.[7][12] After the two broke up in June 2007, Arias moved to Mesa, Arizona.[13] In April 2008, Arias moved to Yreka, California, and lived with her grandparents.[3]

Death[edit]

The killing of Travis Alexander occurred on June 4, 2008.[14] On June 9, 2008, Alexander's body was discovered by his friends[15] in a shower at his home in Mesa, Arizona. Alexander had been stabbed repeatedly, with slit throat and a fatal gunshot wound to the head.[16][17] There have been conflicting reports over the number of stab wounds; some reports state that Alexander had been stabbed 29 times,[18] while others state 27 times.[17][19] Medical examiner Kevin Horn testified that Alexander's jugular vein, common carotid artery, and windpipe had been slashed. Alexander had defensive wounds on his hands. Horn further testified that Alexander "may have" been dead at the time the gunshot was inflicted, and that the back wounds were shallow.[20][21] Alexander's death was ruled a homicide. He was buried at the Olivewood Cemetery in Riverside, California.[22]

Discovery and investigation[edit]

On May 28, 2008, a burglary occurred at the residence of Arias' grandparents, with whom she was living. Among the missing objects was a .25-caliber gun, which was never recovered.[23] (This is significant as a spent .25 caliber round was later found near Travis Alexander's body at the murder scene.)[24]

On June 2, Arias rented a car in Redding, California, approximately 100 miles south of her home. Arias told the rental company staff that she would only be driving the car locally, but when Arias returned the car on June 7, it had been driven about 2,800 miles. The car was missing its floor mats and had red stains on its front and rear seats. The car was cleaned before police could examine it.[25]

On June 5, Arias called Alexander several times and left several voicemail messages for him. She also accessed Alexander's voice mail system.[26]

Alexander missed an important conference call on the evening of June 4. On June 9, having been unable to reach Alexander, a concerned group of his friends went to his home. His roommates initially said he was out of town. After finding a key to Alexander's master bedroom, his friends entered the room and found large pools of blood in the hallway to the master bathroom, where his body was discovered in the shower.[27] In the 9-1-1 call made to authorities (not heard by the jury), Alexander's friends mentioned an ex-girlfriend, Arias, who Alexander had said was stalking him, accessing his Facebook account, and slashing tires.[28][29][30]

Alexander was scheduled to leave on June 10, 2008, for a work-related trip to Cancun, Mexico.[31][32] In early 2008, Alexander told his company that Arias would be joining him. In April, Alexander asked to change his companion to another female friend.[33]

Sure, I am happy, but it would have been better if this had come up on its own accord. I mean what has what goes on in South Africa got to do with this forum if what happens in the USA doesn't. Talking about the Oscar Pistorius trial of course. And what is the issue is that it is 'men', husbands & males in general that are being targeted, rather than the individuals themselves. This happens because we don't have a problem sinking the boot into men, when it's not punishment that is the real issue here, instead it all should be about justice, punishment befitting the crime. An ex-cop will always want to see the bad guys captured and put away, sure, but the defense and the sentences handed out are for the those people here who put justice first, as it's not just about locking bad guys up. My worry is if penalties start being decided by a stone throwing public, when they should always be set by experts, the judges etc.

It's early days yet GA, but in Qld, a woman has been charged with the murder of a man said to be her de facto.....allegedly severed his head and limbs.......

Of course it will never involve the death penalty, indeed she may plead guilty and there won't be a trial, but I'm guessing there'd be more forum interest and discussion on this matter rather than pursuing the Jodi Arias trial and punishment.

I'd wait a bit and see how this Qld matter proceeds..........then start a topic if someone hasn't beaten you to it........just saying...

Correct, and it is barely rating a murmur up here, but ~ an aeroplane has been shot down so that has to be taken into account.

This "Gympie Torso" incident has all the ingredients of a ripper crime story.  The body was dismembered (Chain Saw Massacre?) and only the torso found so far.  It was some pretty clevah sleuthing which led to an ID of the torso  ~ through a rare prescribed drug found in the torso and they traced that all the way so that they could ID the body, and that led them to the alleged perpetrator ~ his de facto.  She's been charged and her dwelling and surrounds are being searched as I type.  It will not be just her involved, if indeed she was.  Women tend to need help in butchering.

AG.....like I said.....when the urge and time coincide, I'll have a look at that case, but it is very hard to get motivated to pick up very cold embers.

Marlon Brando's son Christian got five years jail for killing his sister's boyfriend with a gun as he sat having a cigarette.

Later, around 11 p.m. that night, Brando, who admitted to being drunk at the time, confronted Drollet at the Brando home and shot him. Brando claimed that he did not intend to kill Drollet. "I just wanted to scare him," he said.[8] Cheyenne was staying in a separate room. Christian Brando claimed that he and Drollet were fighting over the gun when it accidentally went off."


Jodi Arias is facing the death penalty for what in effect may well have been a crime of passion. Justice is a political issue.
