Title: ex Labor MP a soviet mole
Post by longweekend58 on Aug 11th, 2014 at 8:59am
A former federal Labor MP has been uncovered as a secret KGB informant, according to newly-released Russian intelligence archives.

Albert James, the member for Hunter in NSW, was an active informer in the 1960s and 1970s under the not-very-secure codename "Albert" — although it has not been revealed what information Mr James may have passed to the Soviet Union, Fairfax Media reports.

His status as a KGB mole is documented in the papers of Vasili Mitrokhin, a former KGB archivist and defector.

The Churchill College Archive in the United Kingdom released the papers last month.

Mr James, who served in Federal Parliament from 1960 to 1980, was known to be a strong critic of the Vietnam War and what he called "USA imperialism". He was also a supporter of Fidel Castro’s communist regime.

He died in 2006, aged 92.

Good job Longy and keep up the good work flushing out all those commies. (pssst I know why you hate them so. Cause Marx was right. Religion is the opium of the people and has caused more deaths and misery then any other ideology and institution known to man and your fanatical lunacy is threatening to plunge the world in yet another holy war.  Time we kicked the habit and flushed this opium down the toilet where it belongs.

It comes as absolutely no surprise to me that there have been spies all over this country for half a century. In fact I seem to recall you justifying Aust spying on Indonesia "because everybody does it and they should have known that" (I think accurately paraphrases what you contended at the time).  But one thing I feel reasonably confident about.  There have been many more US spies and Australian politicians (mainly liberal) acting for US spies then any other spies in this country and often they have worked against the interests of the average Australian to further the interests of American and against the interests of Australians.

Your penchant for being cryptic when backed into a corner is in high gear I see. You might want to explain this "huge difference" you speak of and how it fits in with your point, particularly when its perfectly possible to be spying on another country and for another country at the same time.

He would have been recruited by various means because he had the potential to have influence or access.  Standard old sov approach which was scattergun.  Recruit as many as you can usually via university's, debating clubs, literary clubs etc and hope some amount so something.

MICE. Money, ideology, compromise, ego, the elements of recruitment.

Additionally, ASIO had phone record intercepts of him talking to the Soviet embassy. In the 60s we had Lib governments, if what he was passing was that serious he would have been arrested.

One is treason, the other is an act of war.

But seriously, how'd they let that one slip under their radar? A commo's off to go visit his pal Vlad and give him a package of reading material for the submarine ride home - nope, nothing sus there!

Not falling into any rhetoric, America and the Sovs were engaged in an undeclared war for influence and supremacy and engaged in combat via proxys.  It's not a hard concept to understand.

I actually have a lot of sympathy for the soviet position and their mindset post the Second World War and being threatened by NATO expansion and aggressive aerial and submarine patrols.  They felt themselves to be threatened, surrounded, and at a technological disadvantage.

My goodness, what a Luvvie prog position!  Making apologies for Soviet aggression!  How unlike you DL!

So, it's something we can agree on but the point is, we were not at war with either North Vietnam or the Soviet Union so this MP wasn't committing treason any more than William McMahon was when he was handing over trade information to the Japanese MITI in the early 1960s.  Or various Liberal or Labor senior figures were when handing over information to the CIA in the 1980s and 1990s.   If you want to put this pretty lowly dead MP on trial for Treason then you'll have a long queue of others up before the beaks who are still alive and kicking!

That is in the mix as well, though you could argue they had good reason to be paranoid.  And of course if you are a dictator and have to imprison your own citizens to prevent them leaving, then controlling the media and presenting an external threat is to your benefit.

You don't think the Soviet control of Eastern Europe was justified by three major invasions of Russia over the previous 150 years?  The US containment policy?  The US encirclement of the USSR with American allies and right-wing funded dictatorships?  The US rhetoric which was pretty damn fierce during most of the Cold War?  ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D

since when was invasion and subjugation of entire countries JUSTIFIED?  who are you? Rhiannons love child??

Nice of you to condemn england's invasion ... or where you talking more about israel.

so the fact that a Labor MP was a soviet mole is of no consequence to you?

What happened in the "cold war" - fifty years ago ?

Not in the SLIGHTEST - aside from being a historic "curio"

I doubt the "ruskies" would have had much use for the thoughts of the Labor back-bencher from Hunter - at the time - but humoured him, all the same

The Cambridge Five
Rich, privledged - and the world's most famous Russian spies

... a thought to consider*

When you hear of a "spy scandal" or "sex scandal" in in Australia - thoughts AUTOMATICALLY drift to "the left"

But in the UK - be it "spy scandal", call girls, call boys, cross-dressers, look no further than "the right" and sometimes "the aristocracy"

I put it down to the Coriolis effect

Well, in that case you obviously can't have supported the war in Afghanistan or Iraq, now can you?  Nor the current attack by Israel on Gaza.

In reality, when you're acting out of paranoid fears, nearly anything can be justified and some people will believe you.

I asked a question, putting the Soviet leadership's viewpoint.  If such actions cannot be justified then there goes imperialism, international "interventions" and basically every war that's ever been fought.   ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D ;D ;D

Time we kicked the habit and flushed this opium down the toilet where it belongs.

so you are okay with having spies for foreign countries in our parliament? especially spies from countries that at the time were invading other countries?

they guys been dead for over 10 yrs ....  :D :D :D :D

no need to worry Longie, the only spies left in parliamnet are those put ther by Murdoch and Gina

the evidence (yeah that inconvenient stuff) would suggest the opposite. this isn't labors first soviet spy.  how many Russian spies still exists in the ALP?  we already know the Greens have an actual communist in their midst.

come on longie, since when have you ever concerned yourself with irrelevant stuff like evidence? lets not pretend to start now.
