ELECTING Hillary Clinton as US president would send a powerful message to Islamic extremists that mistreating women is wrong, former prime minister Julia Gillard says. 
 
THE former US secretary of state has not yet formally announced her candidacy for president in the 2016 elections but is thinking about it.

Ms Gillard will "loudly barrack from the sidelines" if the former first lady runs for office.

She said it would not only be important for the US but have a "huge global impact", particularly in the context of the rise of Islamic State, also known as ISIL, in Iraq and Syria.

"Of the things that are being fought over in this security situation, pivotal to them is women's rights and women's roles," Ms Gillard told AAP.

"ISIL is a philosophy that has at its core the subjugation of women.

"So to be able, in the world in which we live today with those security challenges, to see a great democracy elect a woman to lead it would be a real statement.

"(ISIL's philosophy) is anathema to everything I believe in and it's anathema to everything Hillary stands for."

Ms Gillard, who is promoting her memoir My Story, had no criticism of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's approach to tackling ISIL.

She said if there was a Labor prime minister in The Lodge they would have taken the same approach.

Bipartisanship was important when it came to national security issues and the government was blessed by having high-quality advice from its security agencies and defence force.

She said it was important all Australians worked at building a peaceful multicultural country.

Wow, you really ARE the epitome of a first-class idiot. These soldiers were being fired on from that house. The Taliban has made using human shields an art form. The soldiers couldn't safely enter that place until the threat was neutralised. Soldiers don't think like you and I, and for good reason. What if they'd held back because they heard women screaming at the last minute while they were being fired on from that house? What if the Taliban operatives escaped and days or weeks later detonated an IED that killed half a dozen Australian soldiers? In aborting that raid, the soldiers could have unwittingly played a part in the chain of events leading to the deaths of their colleagues later. Our soldiers have far more stringent rules of engagement than the Americans. They perform exceptionally well under very difficult circumstances. You certainly have no right to criticise them if you've never been there in that situation yourself.

My brother has, when he was in Iraq. He told me that Iraqi's were scared of American soldiers because of their gung-ho attitude. On the other hand, they were much more willing to approach an Australian soldier because our guys took a more methodical, careful line during operations among locals. He also told me that the Australian barracks was just a few "doors" down from an orphanage in Baghdad. Instead of asking family and friends to send only magazines, food and X-box games our soldiers asked for care packages that could be given to local children in that orphanage - toys, colouring books and pencils, that sort of thing. This won a lot of respect from locals, apparently.

You're wrong about Australian soldiers. Sure, there's some bad apples but you get that anywhere and they're far outnumbered by the good ones in the Army. I know a lot of them myself. My advice - enlist or shut up.

Of course Julia Gillard would say that - I recall that in the Libyan Crisis, the ONLY person in the room who wanted to go to war using US troops in Libya was the aforementioned Hillary Clinton.

Anyhow - countries that have experimented with women as PM - with very few exceptions - rarely repeat the experiment.  Germany MAY be the different one at this time... we'll wait on that.

No ex–PM comes anywhere near Howard in feeding from the public trough. While PM and commuting Canberra–Sydney HM did the little runt cost us? Gillard’s interview fees and book sales do not come from the public purse. They are her business only.

Fine with me if she wants to be interviewed. She'll always be remembered for being a failure as DPM, a bigger failure as PM and one of the most sexist politicians ever to sit in parliament. With her, it was always someone else's fault or "because I'm a woman". She is incapable of accepting responsibility for her actions.

She is promoting a book - just like Howard did. Get over it.

The reality is that she has hardly said a thing since leaving office.
