The Shawshank Redemption

In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley

Another goodie in my opinion

Red Dragon

Red Dragon is a 2002 American crime thriller film based on Thomas Harris' novel of the same name, featuring psychiatrist and serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. It is a prequel to both The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Hannibal (2001). The novel had served as the basis for a previous film, 1986's Manhunter, but this film is not considered a remake.[2]

The film was directed by Brett Ratner and written for the screen by Ted Tally, who also wrote the screenplay for the Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs. It stars Edward Norton as FBI agent Will Graham and Anthony Hopkins as Lecter, a role he had, by then, played twice before in The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. The film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mary-Louise Parker, Emily Watson, and Harvey Keitel.

"The Giver"

A much better movie than I thought.

Shows an Orwellian-like future where everything is (literally) black and white as to avoid any division or differences to avoid humans. Everybody has to speak in a politically correct manner. You cannot love, nor hate or feel any kind of emotion. Everybody is under surveillance.

In this futuristic society kids grow up and are picked for jobs according to the skills that they show through being educated. The main character is chosen to become a receiver of memories, and soon discovers a forgotten history that shows strong emotions and wars.

I was actually blown away by it.

Watched "Fury" the other night on opening night. Was a tank movie war film, much like Saving Private Ryan. I consider it a more brutal movie than SPR, given that the lingering pain shown by dying soldiers in that movie is more pronounced in Fury.

You will actually end up hating the main characters for the way they are portrayed. But eventually, you will end up conceding that they are the good guys of the film. You will root for them in the final battle scenes.

A must see movie for anyone a fan of "The Thin Red Line" or "Saving Private Ryan". Perhaps a little bit of "Platoon" thrown in for good measure.

I am not completely against the depiction of firearms in movies, but when the plot is driven by situations involving threats at the gun muzzle there is a good chance that I will ditch the DVD or get up and walk out. Same goes for petro fuelled explosions and car chases.

I thought the Life of Pi was a nice antidote to that kind of crap. I especially like the father's advice to his son at a colourful religious festival. Essentially: "Its all very pretty, but religion is darkness."

The 300 Spartans (1962)

B grade movie with no abs and loin clothes  but much closer to history.

Clip above is the final battle when the Spartans found out they where betrayed and surrounded.

Leonidas leading from the front dies and his men fight to get his body back, then they are given an ultimatum surrender his body to Xerxes or die.

They were finished of with arrows because Spartans loathed them thinking they were a cowards weapon and didn't do justice to a warriors death.

Worth watching imo.

HOT FUZZ: seems funny, but will watch it if it comes my way. Seen many a 'over-achiever & under-achiever' (USA & OZ) duo act movie before. Nothing new.
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: One of the top 'Prison' Movies of all time. It's always an 'innocent' man, that flushes out the crooked 'system'. But he wasn't 'totally' innocent and that's why he had to crawl through a tunnel of shi.it to find his sense of personal freedom again. There are 'Bad' guys who need to learn from mistakes, and there are 'Evil' guys who don't want to.
300 SPARTANS: Loved the more recent version as it artistically portrays Greeks as the Greeks did themselves long ago - stylised. I totally agree with the concept of the 'PROJECTILE WEAPON' being the coward's weapon. Look at the USA now - they send in Drones (Terminators) to kill poorly armed 'peasant' remains of a once great Moslem Empire.
"What was once a Sword, is now a Scalpel though"  ;)

THE DIVING BELL & THE BUTTERFLY (true story)

The movie is about a former Elle Magazine Editor having a major stroke and suffering 'locked-in syndrome' where he can only blink an eye for "yes/no" beyond full body paralysis. With this, he manages to write an immediate best seller (with help)and dies 10 days after its successful release.

The movie though, is more from the persepective of his jilted mother of his children, than what is actually written in the book - due to her having the 'rights' of his book on behalf of her children until they come of age. Apparently, his 'mistress' is more 'involved' than the movie lets on and this is an ongoing battle since the movie release.

Really well done movie, with beautiful people in it and it was done specifically in 'French' and it works well. Johnny Depp was originally cast, but was committed to Pirates-Carib'.

To me - it is a good example of what happens to a man, in the extreme, when he takes on more 'women' (love) than he can cope with. The mother of his children took one part of his brain (he becomes a 'half-wit' like all men do) and his Mistress took the other half of his brain. With both women on his mind, no wonder his head caved in and he stroked out.

All men should watch this movie ...and beware. But the book tells the truer story apparently.

Luba lips DJ tells the story of a gang who has to bop its way back home in one night, accused of something they didn't do its not only the cops that's out to get them.

The Wanderers
Story of a Italian teenage gang in America 1960s getting up to all sorts of mischief , if nothing else you'll love the sound track, imo one of the best ever.

The Delta Force

This is a movie that has some serious balls, it has a manly mans man quality about it, love it, like chuck norris in this, the best movie action star that ever has been displayed on screen, the ultimate butt kicking alpha male who leaves other action stars for dead, he is sooo totally underated as an action star, but he has so much fans, that they made a great satire about him through the chuck norris facts,

But its great to see this movie, while it is full of cheesy 80s fun, too many people would imply it to be too much of a bad thing, but not with this movie, Its way more than that, its got full of cool action, chuck norris kicking butts and heads, heart wrenching scenes that would be reminiscent of schindler's List, and that great musical score with the action scenes, nowdays this would be considered too poliltically incorrect to make, especially with chuck norris firing rockets into the faces of those arab terrorists which make up many of the coolest scenes.

This movie was made in 1986, i think it is ahead of its time.

Oh enjoy a movie from a time when it was free to be made and when there was no politically correct police to stop it that the lefties love.

Invasion USA

One of the most awesome chuck norris films you would ever find,

A CANON CLASSIC FOR SURE.

In DELTA FORCE he delivered justice to a bunch of airline passengers who were terrorized by arab terrorists and was armed with a futuristic bike which fired cool rockets into faces of these arab terrorists, he showed america how to fight terrorists.

In INVASION USA chuck norris faces off russians who to dare to invade and **** around with america and have a coalition of anti american leftists and bad guys from every nation in the world (even australia),

A soviet operative named Mikhail Rostov unleashes a plan to somehow invade the USA, and its not only russians, but I swear they call apon every other leftie, fully fledged commie, or anybody with a chip on there shoulder about america, to join this anti american army that invade los angeles and attack the symbols of capitalism such as shopping malls and christmas, and little cute kids having fun, but when america wasnt ready, CHUCK NORRIS WAS ALWAYS READY. and he fights these invaders, terrorists and every other leftie scum who feel daring enough to **** with america, chuck norris is man of few words but lets his hands and feet do the speaking.

A brutal portrayal of the lives of soldiers who put their lives on the line to hunt down and kill Osama bin Laden. A gritty story, directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), is certainly not something for everyone. But certainly a story that would add acclaim to the armed forces currently and previously serving.

Check the following rap for the movie Interstellar. It is a thought provoking movie. The end is totally off the wall. Never seen a finish like it. It will leave you asking big questions when you leave the cinema. :) 4 Stars

(Source Wiki )Interstellar is a 2014 science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine, the film features a team of space travelers who travel through a wormhole in search of a new habitable planet. It was written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan; Christopher combined his idea with a script developed by his brother in 2007 for Paramount Pictures and producer Lynda Obst. He produced the film with Obst and his wife, Emma Thomas. Theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, whose work inspired the film, acted as both scientific consultant and executive producer.

Death Wish 3

There is nothing more awesome than a film with Charles bronson shooting down bad guys and in this film theres plenty of bad guys for him to take down, that you pretty much lose the count on the way, just sooo many bad guys, New york city had an abundance of them

Charles bronson is just one of the most awesome action stars ever to come across on screen his bad assness is legendary, its a pity that todays action stars mostly have to be young because NONE OF THE THEM CANT EVEN MATCH A THIRD OF HOW BAD ASS CHARLES BRONSON WAS.

Ive seen the first death wish and it was ok, Charles bronson kills a few muggers here and there, But in death wish 3 WHICH IS THE BEST DEATH WISH OF THE LOT, he takes on a whole groups of violient youth gangs who terrorize the neighbourhoods of new york, back in the 80s New york was a very violient place with a high crime rate.

But Charles bronson comes to town armed with his widley hunter one of the biggest pistols you will ever seen on screen, deals with gang problem like he knows how and delivering justice ONE BIG BULLET AT A TIME.

Do yourself a favour and experience the awesomeness of Charles bronson, Death wish 3 is must see, and requires repeat viewing, iv lost count how many times ive seen it.

The barbarians
The 80s was a great period that produced awesome movies, I found one which is bloody awesome and a fun ride,

The barbarians, this is a movie that oozes with fun, it has an awesome setting, cool heroes, cool villians, good music and topless women, AND REPEAT VIEWING WATCHIBILITY what more can you want,

Its not a history or period piece about barbarians from long ago europe to throw at your face, this is just an offspring from the sword and scorcery genre which sprang to life through CONAN THE BARBARIAN in 1982, and many imitators came after it, but this movie surpassed even CONAN itself.

And the 80s produced soo many films filled with testosterone and macho in which action stars were partly measured through bicep size along with charisma. i believe this movie is soooo manly that after watching it you would probably feel hairs on your chest.

the practical special effects still hold up even to this very day, hell this movie is better than LORD OF THE RINGS, hell at least this movie has manly characters rather than those gayish characters like frodo and sam in the lord of the rings movies WHICH WAS TOO LONG, TOO BORING AND OVERLOADED WITH TOO MUCH CGI,

This is one of the best sci fi horror movies of the 80s, even though there is a bit of a rip off here and there from the ridley scott alien film a few years back, this movie was said to be a response to steven speilbergs ET released in 1982 about some friendly cute alien who is in distress and wanting to go home, here this alien is very scary, chilling and yet cool, and kills in creative cruel ways, and has an interesting backstory.

This is a movie about alien abduction, a father-son relationship, matter manupilation through thought and teasing flashes of boobs here and there, everything you need in a 80s sci fi horror film.

Deeply recommend if you like old 80s fashioned horror.

Creepshow

This is another fine gem of the 80s horror genre whose repeat viewing watchibility grows more and more on me through the decades, I remember watching the first time when i was 10 i think on a VHS tape, that was such a long, long and long time ago.

The best horror collaboration in history, stephen king and george a romero made this film together in a collection of five short stories interwined with brief animated pieces which stephen king himself stars in the second one, and also has ted danson and leslie nelson.

Good film to watch on halloween.

Razorback

Who ever remember seeing this one ??, when australian films were making there mark around the world in the 80s, Russell Mulcahy made this aussie horror flick about a giant wild pig roaming the outback and killing people, KINDA LIKE JAWS SET IN THE OUTBACK, even though the premise was quite silly, still worth a good watch. awesome cinematography and cheesy practical effects which still looks way better than today's keyboarded CGI, WHICH ARE LIKE FIREWORKS, FIRST 10 MINUTES YOUR EYES ARE MARVELED, 25 MINUTES LATER IT GETS REPETITIVE.

Class of 1984

A ripper of an 80s film, which may kinda exaggerate about the dangers of high school or maybe not, but with this fictional high school gang led by its leader stegmen who is one of the most vicious and nastiest pieces of work of a villian you will ever see, either on a film or at a real high school, with this gang he leads it loves dealing in drugs, gang violience and prostuition and still go to high school, and know that being a minor in the eyes of the law helps them get away with anything. pretty much of that is still going on in todays society, this film has a part horror element which is engaging. so this film still has some power.

"The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies".  Well, marginally better than the second one, Jackson still takes some dire liberties with the story and it has some rather silly points at the end to try and more obviously tie it into The Lord of The Rings.   The battle scenes are pretty good but surprisingly bloodless (perhaps I'm too used to Game of Thrones and Vikings?).   I'd give it about 7, maybe 8 out of 10, just for the spectacle.  The love triangle was rather pointless and typically Hollywood.

Some may say that this is one of the best sci fi horror films of all time,

Well when you have a director like David Cronenberg in the directors chair and a brilliant actor like Jeff Goldblum in the lead as a mad scientist who has invented a teleportation device that goes horribly wrong, with the use of great practical effects, then you have a classic in your hands.

It seems to be a straight contest between Hardy and Elba Idris to be the next Bond.Normally O would say Tom Hardy would be a shoe in but with today's racial tokenism it will probably drop in Elba's favour..still two great actors and whoeever gets it will do the franchise proud.

You liked The Drop?

I watched it last night and wasn't really impressed.  I thought the acting was flat and no-one displayed the slightest bit of emotion which made the whole thing a bit uninteresting.  6/10

Interstellar.

Scientists must find a new planet after Tony Abbott-style environmental policies ruin the Earth.

Visually entertaining, if not a bit slow to start off with, and quite long altogether. The ending was a bit crap imo. But nonetheless an entertaining film mostly.

Saw it yesterday at the 'flicks', and I'd concur with a 7 or 8 out of 10.

Agree re the love triangle, the whole thing came off as being rather incidental.

The movie itself may have been the best of the series. But it's no LOTR quality comparison. I definitely found the last two Hobbit movies to be better than the original Hobbit movie. But I was not even concerned with the way the Hobbit movies didn't compare more favourably than the LOTR movies.

Though we can make comparisons about Legolas' ability to defy gravity in both series, the Hobbit didn't do a great deal of fight scenes as extensively as in LOTR. I thought the Hobbit series was quite hollow in comparison. Just too few characters to follow (which did uncomplicate the storylines), and not much action.

Went to see Exodus: Gods and Kings, and must say, it was interesting with the story from the bible, trying to keep it real, with the sea scene.....and a lot of special effects, wow.
Hubby and I liked the movie, daughter saw it a couple of nights ago and she thought it was an interesting story, but her BF thought it was boring.

I can tell you something that pleased me, I hardly ever go to the movies because, unless it is just a good visual film, and if there is a lot of dialogue, and the hearing problem I have, I miss a lot of what is said and lose interest in the movie.
The good thing at Reading cinema is, they gave me these earphones, and it worked an absolute treat! I had it so loud, it was fantastic.
Makes the movie even better!
:)
Usually, I just wait until it comes out in DVD to hire, and then have the subtitles.
It's annoying to others, having the subtitles covering part of the scene, but, instead of me asking "What did they say" like I used to, now the tables have turned, if they miss out on hearing something or it wasn't clear enough, they ask me "What did they say?" because I read it  ;D  8-)

The Last starfighter

Great movie, this movie was one of the stepping stones in the evolution of CGI in movies and the digital effects still hold up today even though it was made in 1984, even though those rubber alien suites that the actors wore to play aliens looks dated, but you will find that this movie has an irresistable and wonderful charm to it.

The story has arthurian overtures, instead of the sword in the stone, its a joystick in a 80s arcade video game, where young alex rogan breaks a record playing the game and gets recruited by the star league to defend the galaxy.

It has a great musical score that has an 80s spielberg/lucas feel to it.

The last temptation of christ

I actually like this movie, it offers a radical new look of Jesus christ even in shades of pornagrahy as if he was just a human being following a call to fulfill gods wish., but this movie caused a shitstorm through the christian world in 1988 where he was accused of offending the sensibilities of christians, but then again i liked this movie, even though its running time is very, very, VERY, VERY long, BUT MARTIN SCORCESEE IS STILL ALIVE TODAY.

Johnny Depp's movie The Rum Diaries (2011)was on TV last night. It started off with a couple of good scenes and then went down hill. The plot is clichéd and at times quite unbelievable, the characters never develop and there are several faults with their period interpretation including the use of the word Vibe at a point before it had been introduced into the popular lexicon. It's not worth watching.

A great horror movie, MADE IN AUSTRALIA.

Believe it or not, it has created a bit of a buzz in america, and holds a fresh 97% on ROTTEN TOMATOES, that even the director of the ORIGINAL EXORCIST FILM,  William Friedkin said it was the most scariest film he has seen in ages.

Directed by jennifer kent, actress turned director, its a horror movie that delves into the emotional dimemsions of parenthood, grief and depression explored through the angle of the HORROR GENRE, about a young single mother amelia raising her young son samuel and is consumed by grief of her husband who was killed 6 years ago and battling depression while raising her dificult young son, one night she reads him a pop up storybook called the babadook and all hell breaks loose after that, ITS ONE HECK OF A SMART HORROR FILM. better than the average junk passed as horror movies these days from hollywood.

I highly recommend this film.

Action action and more action. Keanu Reeves is not a favourite actor but he definitely does have a charm about him and he looks pretty good for 50.

The plot is pretty thin but there are lots of amusing one-liners to break up the carnage. The body count is huge and I don't think I have ever seen so many heads being blown off in the one movie. The assassins have their own currency and code. Well most of them.

Ian McShane and William Dafoe are always entertaining but Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) still gives me the creeps.  Produced by Eva Longoria.

I enjoyed it.  Might watch The Babadook tonight.

83% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Babadook was a great movie. I still have a rental here at home, and would probably watch it again. I smart horror movie that doesn't rely on stupid jump scares. A real psychological horror movie. Basically, a woman who is still suffering the shock of losing her husband in a car accident is cursed with nightmares and day dreams about a demon after reading a book about him.

Two I've watched this week.

Prometheus - think that's how you spell it. Borrowed DVD. I only got about half way through and couldn't stomach any more. I did watch a couple Alien movies and got through them.

Age of Consent. This an oldie about a painter (James Mason) and a water nymph (mostly nude Helen Mirren about 18-19). Shot on Dunk Island with some Aussies in the cast. Not bad but the main attraction was the body beautiful in a lot of underwater scenes - if it was her body. Just about the perfect body.

But mostly been watching half hour sitcoms. A new one called "Whites" with the guy from Jonathan Creek is about surreal goings-on in a restaurant kitchen.

I watched the war movie "Fury" the other night.

It's pretty damn cartoonish and unrealistic. It's about the crew of a Sherman tank "Fury" during April 1945 in Germany. Brad Pitt plays the well past pension age commander.

German shells bounce off the Shermans and tank battles are fought at distances of less than 20 metres. It takes about 1,000 or more, incredibly dumb Germans to attack this single tank.

I read it's supposed to be an anti war movie. Personally, I thought it was the opposite. I can easily imagine theatres full of yanks chanting "USA! USA! USA!" as the final credits roll.

I think Leonardo Dicaprio is gold standard and is constantly being compared to Nicholson, he is much better than Nicholson,!

Enjoyable movie and I am not sure why it got so many bad reviews.  The battle seemed to just stop and the thousands of fighters just disappeared but all in all it was quite enjoyable and a good lead into the Rings movies.

Lots of moral lessons to be had and tears to shed at the demise of some of the characters.

Hired the DVD movie from the DVD kiosk the other day, "Predestination" and at the end of it, myself, hubby, son and his gf, asked "So what was that movie about?"
It is a tricky one, trying to understand it, with time travel back and forth...... but then again, what do we know about time travel and what can really happen, so this is probably just an idea of what may happen.
The movie kept the suspense going, and that was good, but the ending.....left us wondering a bit...maybe that was the idea....watch it for yourselves and get back here and discuss if you wish.

Did you notice how flawed the movie's premise was for the audience. I noticed the first time that it wasn't right, but had to take another look later on, since I missed some of the detail. Evidently, the villain of the movie managed to get captured after an elaborate trap to lure in Bond. He then set about initiating an escape from MI6 prison, where he could open alarmed doors, and still get passed guards (trained to kill you 20 different ways). Then there was the actual escape where he co-ordinated with other members of his faction, in which he dressed up as a police officer and blew up the subway line just in time for Bond to be in just the right place at the right time. Then he got in to the building where M was speaking on her own defence about why she should keep her job. His intention to kill M, after killing off the guards (also trained to kill mob bosses and the like).

If you ever worked with law enforcement, you would find this scenario totally implausible. Even for a movie.

I saw this movie last night, and thought that it is a good contender for best movie of the year. Though a few movies would be better represented for film of the year, this movie Mad Max: Fury Road is actually quite a redemption for George Miller. His first movie was praised in theatres as being quite a grim portrayal of a pre-apocalyptic world, overrun by maniacs. MM2 was the peak of the series (atleast until Fury Road), and MM3 showed just how much Hollywood should keep it's nose out of the franchise -- though it did have its moments.

Fury Road starts out fast, and doesn't let up much, except to have a few breathers. Much of the intensity of Mad Max 2 is shown and exceeded in Fury Road. All the nods of reference to all three movies previous to this movie give the audience enough to tie this movie into the franchise. But the movie is something more. Of course, Miller has a bigger budget and more technology to work to make a good movie. But it seems that the actors are putting in the effort to make the grittiness of the genre all the more real. Even Rosie Hungtington Whitely has made an effort to get acting lessons for this film. Those film buffs out there that cringe at previous efforts of the Mad Max franchise, take heart to know that this final installment should be considered more mature than those others. If you're not a Mad Max fan, this recent effort could be considered a reboot for the franchise, and nowhere near disappointing as the predecessors.

What I liked about Mad Max was its low budget Australian innovation. If this new movie is anything like the subsequent big budget movies, it is just more kids stuff from Hollywood.

No. The movie is quite gritty, and keeps in true form to the way the first two movies of the franchise presented themselves to audiences. There are nods towards Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, but it isn't that camp. It appears that this movie is more mature than the first three movies.

If your concern is to do with the amount of CGI, they keep the computer generated images to a minimum usage, and let the action speak loudly. Compared to other CGI heavy movies, this Fury Road has taken a laxative, and is all the better for it.

I don't think it's a movie for the teenage audiences. The MA rating is appropriate, and there are a few scenes where the younger audiences wouldn't be appropriate to seeing this movie. Though I believe that the dialogue seemed appropriate for a post apocalyptic scenario -- people desperate to survive and bordering on religious insanity and barbarity.

Still, I always wonder why they drive around V8s when there is an oil shortage.

A must see in my opinion.

Jurassic World

Very much like a sequel to Jurassic Park, and ignore very much the events of The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3. But again, you are frustrated at how casually they ignore the safety and security of park and tourists whilst having an inadequate security team that gets wiped out within a few minutes of things starting to go wrong.

Chris Pratt makes a good making of a lead actor, whilst the other actors are rather plain and make well for extras. The children, as usual, get themselves into mischief, and it's difficult to feel sorry for them. Though they are smart enough to handle their situation -- with luck. Bryce Dallas Howard makes for good eye candy, but is clearly playing a character that doesn't belong in an animal park.... anywhere. She is more like some kind of failing businesswoman trying to protect the interests of a unique park, where visitor numbers realistically should remain strong. Kind of akin to going out of business because you are the only supplier of cold water at a marathon, but people want you to add gatorade.

When I saw the trailer with the raptors interacting with Owen, I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. The motorcycling scene seemed very fake, and you could let yourself reason that it was a green screen with Pratt on some motorcycle indoors looking as if the clock for his turn on the ride was about to finish. But the rest of the scene looked pretty good, and not as corny as I made the initial scene seem.

You can see the ending from a mile off, because you hadn't seen much of the contenders before. And it ended kind of corny, followed by the cliched victory call. But you have to wonder how hungry dinosaurs get every day. Because if I was a dinosaur, I would probably take a break after consuming my third security personnel for the day.

Have been watching a few 'space' movies lately.
As is my wont.

"The Europa Report" is quite good. 4/5

"Moon" has a very good story. 4/5

"solaris", slow moving. Good story but too 'deep' 2/5

Terminator Genysis

I believe that it is one of those movies that you should see more than once at the cinema. But it is definitely not as good as T2. Terminator 2 was a well paced movie that allowed for scenes of action, followed by a release of tension scenes. Terminator Genysis was a movie that seemed very rushed. As if the director and crew were trying to fit as much information as it can into a movie. It seemed a bit insulting to the audience, with unexplained and unnecessary dialogue to push the plot along. Reese didn't seem to take too allying with the T-800 at all, except with the final scenes.

Jai Courtney was a good Reese, but could have had a darker attitude. Particularly, when I saw early trailers that made him look bad ass. Jason Clarke seemed out of place in a Terminator movie. And his T-3000 character (or whatever it was) seemed more about playing a narcissistic Terminator, more concerned about reprimanding his enemies, than about killing them when he clearly didn't need them. Of course, Arnold seemed to have phoned his performance in here, and he is definitely not the same guy that enthused over T3. 67 years old, you can only expect so much from a guy who has had heart surgery, and is probably developing some kind of alzheimers. I guess he did okay.

Overall, I suppose this movie ranks as the third best of the franchise. I rank T2, T1, and TG as the top ranking, respectively. Though, I would have liked to have seen this movie made about 10 years earlier, under different circumstances. But I'm satisfied with the outcome of the movie.

I think someone already mentioned about the latest Mad Max?
Went to see it, and the big mistake we made, was going to the Gold Class, with a nice relaxed lay back seating arrangement!
Not for this movie, it kept the pace going, an edge of the seat stuff. I found I couldn't stay relaxed in the reclined position much, had to sit up and feel all the 'eeks and ouches' in this high action packed movie.

The hubby thinks there was only about 20 seconds of calmness in the movie overall  ;D

It just depends on what type of movies you like, sometimes there may be nothing that takes my interest to go to the movies, and then, something does take my interest, and I like to go see it on the big screen with surround sound etc.
Most of the other times, I wait for it to come on DVD and then hire it from them DVD kiosks for about $4 each.
Just had a promotional thing, where I could hire 3 dvds for nothing, and I got these 3 movies, which I will give my opinion on

Fifty shades of grey.
American Sniper.
What we did on our holidays.

Fifty shades of Grey, I heard mixed opinions, my son and his gf went to the movies to see it, and said it was crap, with a crap ending...I never read any of the books either, so I was very open minded about what it would be about, although I knew it had sexual overtones in it....well, my opinion, I thought the movie was intriguing and yes, the ending did leave one hanging to know what happens next, so I told my son, there are 2 other books following, so that means, there will be sequels to this first movie.....I guess from a psychological viewpoint, I was interested in this to see why Christian Grey was the person he was...and bit by bit, it gets revealed, as Ana seemingly curious, wanted to find out more, and would plunge more and more into his dark world.
Don't want to say much more and give away too much for those that haven't read the book or seen the movie......

American Sniper I wanted to see this because the son said he watched it and said it was a true story, he didn't give much away, so since I could hire it for nicks, both hubby and I watched this, and it really did get me thinking very much about war, and why did the yanks go to Afghan and stay there, and then, in the end, I won't say what, but actual footage is shown at the end.
It also shows just how war can effect those that go in such a way, not only physically, but mentally....being a true life story, it had more to do with the reality of what they filmed.....I dare many to watch it, and see if they are not moved by this movie.

What we did on our holidaysI had absolutely no idea what this was about, but it looked light hearted and a bit funny.....and didn't realize Billy Connolly was in the movie as the grand-dad...and those 3 kids, were brilliant little actors, and the lines they had to remember, and so innocent and endearing...but with quite a bit of a seemingly strange twist at the end as the kids take matters into their own hands, on the beach....thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

Well there you have it, 3 reviews in the one posting  8-)

The Shawshank Redemption

In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley

I look down on criminals.

I don't look down on the poor.

Andy wasn't poor, and he was innocent of the crime.
What was that about Western Sydney and wife beaters?

I've seen a lot of western Sydney men wearing wife beaters.

Haven't you?

Didn't your Dad wear one?
So you sit down and cry over the poor cons in Shawshank Redemption but secretly you think all poor males are cons?

No, and no.

Any other questions?

No, and no.

Like that of music, the movie industry is aimed at the crowd between 15 and 22. Apparently, that is where the money is today. Similarly, the most lucrative market for fiction writers is Fantasy. Whatever, just fill it with big explosions, car chases, or people with blue skin and you have a blockbuster.

Well with Halloween upon us the young squatters in this household have been watching supposed scary classical movies all week.

Started with friday the 13th, didn't realise how bad this movie was till I watched it again, then there was scream where the first few minutes of the movie totally eclipse the climax, and The ring yady yady yady dada.

There saving the movie Halloween for tomorrow night, cant say I'm looking forward to it.

Not my favourite genre but first few minutes of scream not bad.

The revenant.

Oh....my....God! We watched this last night, and it was one of the toughest movies to endure, really feeling it all....particularly the hardships and it being accounted on true events. The part with the grizzly bear, it just was incredible how they filmed it, so realistic!
Will say no more, but how tough those times (and people) were, all in the name of survival. The wilderness locations for the filming of this are absolutely amazing.

Typical Tarantino style movie. A whole lot of talking and stories about what they did and where they were from. Even though I was experiencing a heatwave outside, the atmosphere of the movie cooled me down to acclimatise with the movie's setting -- freezing cold. Never mind the theater's air conditioning. Plenty of violent scenes. The movie explains itself come the last 3rd of the movie, as to why things were the way they were around the beginning of the climax of the film. Best movie of 2016. This movie should rank high against other movies over the next 11 months.

Typical Tarantino movie.  Nothing for the first half and blood and gore for the second half.  Lots of politics, racial tension and brutality.  He is clearly trying to say something.

The movie was at the halfway mark and I was becoming bored and restless but then, thankfully, it started moving along.    Tarantino loves long movies but he could easily cut them to 2 hours instead of 3 to alleviate the long drawn out nothingness.

Brilliant performances from Jackson, Goggins  (I loved him in Justified, he is a real talent),  Jason Leigh and Russell.   Lots of witty and humorous quips but when it ended I just felt  like something was missing.

I thought that about the last two movies. It really is a movie for teenagers, and I think that's where the series was aimed. I'm 36 years old, and probably 16 years passed who the films catered. But I did like the first two movies. Mockingjay might get purchased, just to complete the collection.

Saw that the other night on television. Well, perhaps about 10 minutes worth. Thought they took the Hitler bashing too obsessively. I had a dvd copy of the movie, but I think I gave it away to a pawn shop for $1.

I have almost perfect hearing in both ears, and yet some American accents and habits of speech where they swallow words or roll them into one another means I miss understanding words every five sentences or so. In this clip, quite literally I couldn't keep up with what they were saying.

ah ha! That is something I don't have a problem with  ;D as I have terrible hearing in both ears, I read the sub titles.

And here is he interesting thing.....before sub titles existed, we would watch a film and I would be constantly asking "What did he/she say?" much to the annoyance of everyone, then saying they miss the next part because repeating stuff to me!
But now, sub titles help with all them accent/speech/pronunciation/mumbling/music too loud over the dialogue glitches, and now, it is hubby that asks me "What did he/she say?"  :P

Talk about turning the tables eh?  ;D

So with that, I wouldn't have a clue what you mean Herb  ;D but having said that, what did you think of the movie apart from the rolling of their accent?

Good on you, Lady Lols! Now I know who to blame for all that chatter I used to hear in the cinemas all those years ago!

This movie looks like it could be fun to watch. It's a 'Situation Comedy' type film in which witty dialogue and characterisations are the main ingredients.

I'll keep my eye out for it when it arrives on our television sets.  :)

Yes  :) Have always like that show, and glad it came back with the same Mulder and Fox.
Always gives thought and reflection of life's strangeness from a couple of different angles.
One of my fave quotes from Mulder to Fox from the earlier series was ...

"If coincidences aren't coincidences, then why do they feel so contrived?"

Big fan of westerns, this isn't your usual one though, I liked this movie it even had a Agatha Christie feel of who done it for a moment or two, while I enjoyed it the first time and recommend it for viewing, its not the sort of western I can watch lots of times

I do not care for the Western Genre. Its parameters, which I find a bit tedious, are shared with the cop and tough guy movies. That being said, there are a few Westerns that held my interest. "One Eyed Jacks," with Marlon Brando and Karl Maldon, comes to mind.

You either like or hate them, there's no in between.

While I like them, I don't like the cop movie tough guys for example the Dirty Harry movies just couldn't get in to them.

Movies like lethal weapon though were great.

Cheyenne Autumn was a great western in every sense of the word. Centre piece was the decline of the Indian Nation the Cheyenne.

John Ford's last western, a masterpiece, Richard Widmark stellar in an outstanding cast.

You were doing quite well for the list, until you ended with "The Campaign". I can not call that a comedy.

You have a few on the list that I have yet to watch. Drive, and Ides of March. Body of Lies I have not seen for a while, if I can recall watching it. The others I had collected in my dvd collection, specifically because they were such rewatchable movies. I think I have watched The Adjustment Bureau a few times, and Collateral probably about 20 times since getting the movie in 2005.

There were a few movies in my collection that I have on constant rewatch. One being "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas and Robert Duval. Can not get passed the ending scene when the revelation was made to the anti-hero about who he was to society.

Okeydokey.

Incidentally I see you have .. "CO2 has never controlled temperature on Earth".

I told my niece awhile ago that CO2 is heavier than air and therefore can't be polluting the atmosphere, and that CO2 is essential for plant growth, etc.

These young ones are all being brain washed at school, same as my kids.

Yes its true Herbie as more CO2 accumulates it traps more water vapour, but there is a saturation point and once that has been reached it doesn't matter how much Co2 is pumped into the atmosphere whether man made or natural.

Plus water vapour and clouds are responsible for 95% of the greenhouse effect here on Earth, CO2 and all the other trace gases make up the other 5%.

Thanks for the heads-up.

And it's not global warming by a couple of degrees that would be the problem - but global cooling by a couple of degrees.

And it's all cyclical over a period of 800 years.

Um.. my niece is 40 and has a doctorate in a combination of two of the sciences. I tend not to argue with her, but do a lot of polite nodding instead.  :-[ :-/

Its obvious you haven't seen it Herbie, is this some form of payback....???

It's a woman's movie.

I was forced to see it in around 1961 - 62.

It allowed me to catch up on some sleep.

You haven't told us everything about yourself, have you Ajax?  8-) It's okay - we're a very tolerant bunch here as Karnal will testify.

damn great b grade horror movie, one of the true classics of the b grade horror flicks of the glorious 80s, with those old school practical effects which gave meaning to SPECIAL EFFECTS, it has hyper sexuality and lots of werewolves that would make sushi out of you with there claws and teeth and dine on you if you get ambushed, lol

I enjoy reading the pulp trash of ufology, I call it trash now, because I'm older and wiser and I know people make an industry outa things like paranormal stuff like UFOs and alien abductions, but as a kid I was young and quite impressionable so the UFO crap was easily digestable to a mind like mine who loved astronomy and reading and watching information about aliens, while the travis Walton abduction was bullshit, it is quite an entertaining one, that will leave you in suspension of belief for a little while UNTIL YOU GOOGLE IT, lol

Not a bad movie at all, its quite good

These final hours

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this movie yet. But I thought that this was a movie that was a pleasant surprise for someone like me. Basically, the movie surrounds the events of an apocalyptic disaster about to happen. The disaster being that a meteor has hit the Earth, and has resulted in a firestorm that is slowly engulfing the planet.

The protagonists in this film involve a young, self-obsessed man (James), and a young girl (Rose). James meets the young Rose by accident, during James' attempt to get to his friends' "End of the world" party. By intervention from James, Rose is rescued from an attempted gang-rape. Together, they journey for the party, with Rose hoping that someone will help her get to her aunty's place to be with her father. Although James is reluctant at first to help her, he is increasingly realising that he could redeem himself as a person by helping Rose get back to her father before it is too late.

I did not expect much from this movie. However, I was happy to be proven wrong, with the storyline giving an engaging experience. You do feel some emotion of wanting to protect Rose (played by Angourie Rice). And though you do feel some resentment to James (played by Nathan Phillips), you do forgive him by the end of the movie. For the rest of the movie, it is an interesting account of how people would spend their lives for the last day on Earth.

I would warn that there are scenes of strong violence, language, and sexual scenes. So, if you can get passed watching something as violent as "Natural Born Killers", you should be fine with this movie.

Splendor in the Grass

Warren Beatty & Natalie Wood

A great movie about how deep love can be, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend this one.

Since this is about movies and actors/actresses.....I am so glad you mentioned Natalie Wood.....only just recently, having been to California and went to see the "Famous Hollywood Walk", I found it more fascinating to see the older actors and actresses (since there were less crowds around them!!)
Natalie was one of those I actually went down on the concrete to compare my hand size, and incredibly, small like mine, but, her feet were even smaller, tiny in fact.
The sad thing about Natalie (she was one of my faves at the time), is how she drowned. It still seems a mystery I think.
Another one that fascinated me for sizing was Danny Kay, how small his feet were (and I am a ladies size 8)....he and I had the same size feet!

It just brings to life when you can see these hand and foot prints of our great actors/actresses from the past.
I recommend anyone to go and do that famous walk, so many to see, and compare with, and all their quotes, for instance, Clint Eastwood wrote "You make my day"...

Here are some pics of my comparing myself to Natalie and Danny, just out of interest for this thread  :)

If I recall at the time, Ajax, there was alcohol in the mix of all this, and I found this article very interesting reading, from the Coroner and all the findings and markings on her body to suggest the dinghy, and her heavy water logged jacket, and the high alcohol level in her blood which wouldn't help her to think clearly, and the hyperthermia from the cold water wouldn't help much either. This report of how she got all the bruises explains how she tried to get back into the dinghy etc.

So I get a special to hire a free DVD from the Kiosk this long weekend, and I decide on "The Dressmaker".....so daughter and I sit to watch it as our little get together, and up to a point, we liked it, then something happened and then we hated it!
Starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, and a brilliant Judy Davis.
Acting was excellent and it really took you there, to that time, and how a small town mentality would be.

It is set in 1951 in an outback Aussie dusty town. A bit of a lynch mob mentality, the haute couture is splendid...the story line was interesting, and the love story developing, (that spunk Liam Hemsworth, God's gift to our female eyeballs!  :))..and then, something happens, that just wasn't expected.
The hubby hadn't seen it, and he was going to watch it on Monday (public holiday), and both daugther and I said "nah, not your type of movie, it's got a bit of a twist in it that made us cry", and he said, oh good, I don't want to watch it then! ;D

Not sure if it is a man's choice in movies, but the acting is excellent, in fact, I think the story line in some parts was a little kooky.
But anyway, I did watch it and thought I would put up my review of it.

Van damiens land

If you like or fascinated with Australian history in particularly australias convict past, this movie is a must for Australian history buffs, it tells the story of australias most notorious convict, alexander pearce  one of eight men who escaped the penal settlement on sarah island in Tasmania in 1823 and set out to cross the Tasmanian wilderness only to find a lack of food to follage and so resorted to cannibalism to deal with there hunger, the story about these men and what they had done is incredible,

The film has a very slow pace which may turn off some people, so the film is not for everyone, but is well worth for some, like myself,  :)

Got to agree there, Mechanic. Went in to see that movie at the theatre. I was probably the youngest person in the cinema. The average age of the patrons being about 60 years old, making me feel out of place. Watched the movie, expecting that the movie would not be too great. Happy to see that the movie had a good mix of drama, comedy, and a little heartache. Seemed like a good enough finish.

I thought it was very good too. So I read the book, with which the movie script has little in common. The book waffles on into a very indistinct end. The final scene in the movie, on the mountain trail, and the fate of the girl, are taken directly from a Conrad story called Gaspar Ruiz.

Oh Godallmity, I tried to watch Charlie and Boots last night. It was dreadful. Corny script, and Hogan's performance is something you would feel uncomfortable watching at a school play. Then there are the scenes involving speeding vehicles out in the Bush. For the sound track, they use Bluegrass banjo arpeggios like in Dukes of Hazzard. I give the movie three groans, at which point I give up.

Excellent movie, its good to see that Hollywood does turn out great films among its pile of rotten crappy ones.

A young woman on the run from her boyfriend finds herself in a fallout shelter with a creepy character played by john goodman who really comes off as one awkard, creepy scary dude who wants to keep this young woman locked up inside the fallout shelter with him as he tries to convince her that some mysterious apocalypse has destroyed the world above them.

Eight Days A Week, the Ron Howard documentary.

When I was a kid, I was not a huge Beatles fan. I liked what they did, but not enough to buy their records. Blues, folk, and music with ethnic flavours is still what grabs me. However, I did see the Beatles in concert on two occasions, and Ron Howard's documentary on their touring years is about as close as we can get to what it was like. What I remember of those concerts is just what a great live band the Beatles were. They had no fold-back or sound desk, so they had to estimate the balance by experience. Having the opportunity to see and hear them with contemporary cinema quality sound is stunning, but thank God they didn't let Ringo sing too often.

Even as late as the 1990s, this movie would have been very popular, but our local multi-plex didn't even bother to put up a poster. The small audience was interesting; a bunch of old-timers chuckling at the reminders of youth. A couple of teenage girls, who were there with their grandmother, were bored witless, and spent the time frigging around with their smart phones. Probably watching X Factor.

Both movies are directed by the same guy who directed "Training Day". Have you watched that movie yet? Training Day gets a constant spin in my dvd player a couple times per year.

Recently saw Hacksaw Ridge.

Great story, shockingly bad film. This was basically Mad Mel making a snuff movie. Vince Vaughn as a drill instructor, muahaha.

The combat scenes were worse than a cartoon and the acting was either hammy or saccharine sweet.

The only highlight of the film was spotting filming locations in Centennial Park and the Aussie bush being passed off as West Virgina.

I thought Hacksaw Ridge was a little juvenile in places. But it ramped up the brutality when the conflict began.

Got home from seeing the movie. I missed some time due to an urgent toilet break. But I went online to see what it was that I missed. They had a video of this movie that was near HD quality. No doubt, I could have probably waited a couple weeks and just watched it online for free.

I did like the movie. But I think it is one of those movies I could give a miss in buying a DVD copy.

It is an annoyance trying to find movies online to watch for free. I bookmarked 50 movies to watch on a particular website that streamed movies quite nicely. Then it was legislatively blocked from public viewing. Had to research another set of websites for the same movies.

In the last week, I watched 2 movies using my $8 movie pass for the month of August. Sadly, it was these two movies, "Valerian" & "Dark Tower", that left me wanting my $16 back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPeqNTqZNN0

Valerian, being one of the most visually spectacular yet dull movies I have seen in a while. Both leads were painful to watch. Seemed like every scene was just green screen after green screen. None of the actors seemed to really give a stuff about what they were doing in the film. Just another pay cheque for each of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjwfqXTebIY

Dark Tower, on the other hand, was not so over the top with visuals. But there was not really much to offer for this movie. This movie somewhat reminded me of "End of Days", with Matthew McConaughey acting the part similar to what Gabriel Byrne did in End of Days. Idriss Elba was quite good for his role as the gunslinger. The movie seemed nothing more than a story about kidnapping and vengeance. Plus, there was an interdimensional porthole thrown in.

Do yourself a favour, if you have not been warned already: Steer clear of rubbish like these two movies. You will hurt your brain with regret.

Just watched 'What Happened To Monday" - a thought-provoking future of overpopulation, in which Willem Dafoe plays a man who clones seven grand-daughters, each named after a different day of the week and each of whom has different skills and such... when the law says one child only.  'Siblings' are exterminated.... with Glenn close playing the corrupt owner of the extermination company and wanting to go into politics and run the whole shebang...

One actress plays all seven siblings, and the plot is complex and needs careful attention to keep up, since all the grand-daughters look almost the same and you need to keep their 'position' sorted out.

Monday of the title is in close with Close..... Close's ideology is that by being 'cryo-vaced' (killed off in reality) agaisnt some better future the children will not suffer ... and eventually Monday signs off on a huge donation to put Close into power - under duress since Close holds at least one of her siblings as hostage...

Lots of shooting and killing to bump off some of the siblings, and eventually Close is undone by one of them pretending to be a dead one and filming the extermination of a child.... which is played on the big screen at Close's acceptance speech for politics....

Not a bad story - ends up ambiguous, since now everyone is allowed to breed freely (Monday was pregnant with twins), and the final scene is a hospital room filled with crying babies... problem unsolved..... so who was right in the end?

Story has similarities with Roger Zelazny's "Today We Choose Faces".

Thor: Ragnarok is probably the best of the three Thor movies. Though I have forgotten what the first two Thor movies were like, this third installment comes with a fresh perspective. Loki is still the same Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston), although this time he presents as an anti-hero rather than a villain of the other Marvel movies.

Cate Blanchett plays a good villain. Though I could criticise her for sounding too much like her character in the Lord of the Rings series. Chris Hemsworth plays his character with a lot more fun than the dull funnyman he was in the Avengers and previous Thor movies. Perhaps he enjoyed making this movie more than the other Marvel movies. Mark Ruffalo seemed a little flat in this movie. Though half of the movie with his character in it was to do with the Hulk, Banner was an adequate character in the moments that mattered. Idriss Elba played Heimdall with the seriousness his character allows. Whilst Jeff Goldblum finally played a character befitting a movie that needed his charisma. I did not like his character in Independence Day or the sequel "Resurgence".

8.5/10

Geostorm

I have to start off by saying "What the **** was that?" after finishing watching the movie. Let's start off by saying that Gerard Butler (playing Jake Lawson) is not the type of person to play one of the smartest scientists in the world. His narcissism goes well beyond comfortable to the point where you hope they find someone else to solve the crisis on the space station.  Luckily for the movie studios, they employed Alexandra Lara to play the role of the commander of the space station Ute Fassbinder. That is where the credibility of the movie is saved. Jim Sturgess (playing Bulter's younger brother "Max Lawson") does a reasonable job keeping the action on Earth going. He is aided by a secret service agent (played by Abbie Cornish). Admittedly, Cornish played the strongest casting role in the entire movie. Ed Harris seemed to have a minor role in the movie, until the reveal, and he seemed under-utilised.

Overall, this movie is too stupid for a cinema experience. Although the special effects would warrant a big screen and surround sound home theatre to really enjoy. On a side note, if they used one of those satellites to put out a storm in Australia, I would be one of the first to book a flight to NASA to throttle the engineer who hit the "dissipate storm" switch.

6.5 out of 10.

Happy Death Day

This movie will probably test of few people's stupidity levels. If you like time travel reset movies like "Groundhog Day" or "Edge of Tomorrow", then you probably won't mind a serial killer type movie.

Quote:
Theresa "Tree" Gelbman wakes up on her birthday on Monday, September 18th in the dorm room of classmate Carter Davis after a drunken romp the previous evening. Tree goes through the day being self-centred, dismissive and condescending to her fellow classmates and previous hook-ups, ignoring her father's invite to a restaurant, throwing away a birthday cupcake given to her by her roommate Lori, and having an affair with her professor Gregory Butler. That night, while going to a party, Tree is lured into a tunnel where she is murdered by a hooded figure wearing a mask of the campus mascot.

Tree wakes up the next morning back in Carter's bed with the previous day's events repeating.
-- Wikipedia

Theresa (played by Jessica Rothe) is somewhat a disappointing character. And I found it difficult to like her all that much. Had I found that I could relive the day after day, I would probably do a whole lot of catch up reading before I investigated my own murder. But that is just me.

I thought the premise of the whole movie was ridiculous when the reveal finally takes hold. You are supposed to believe that the series of events were so conveniently planned that the killer would be able to kill Theresa every day without fail. You would assume that the killer would have taken the day off at some point, after Theresa (with all that hindsight) could find a hiding spot somewhere on campus or throughout the town to have the next day. Apart from Carter, there are no really likeable characters.

A fun movie for time reset fans and an audience in their teens through to their twenties.

7/10.

I enjoy watching a kids movie with my young daughter.
But the 'SON OF BIGFOOT' is an absolute shocker!
Not funny in any part of the movie, though it tries hard to be funny.
It has the same cliché plot and characters, etc, etc - of many other 'animation' movies.
It was so boring, no-one laughed, I snoozed in the stagnant middle and it was tediously long.

I won't hesitate to WARN anyone against paying to see this tripe - designed just to rip the kiddies off!
-minus 3 stars  :P
*************************

Thor: Ragnarok - I am not a 'Comic SuperHero' movie enthusiast and trust me, I've dodged seeing many.
But with many write-ups saying this is 'funny-different' etc, I got curious and sure enough. It was definitely very funny.

But, the overall 'Comic-Scenario' is still a drag.
And they really had to put down their whole 'Comic Scene' to get the laughs though.
So it wasn't 'originally' funny.

The 'Blue' Gladiator character with the Maori accent - got the most laughs from the Audience, by far.

Still, worth a watch - but not as funny as DeadPool.
x3 Stars

Justice League

I suppose I could have skipped this movie, seeing as I did not like Batman v Superman. But, I was curious enough to see what sort of sexy poses Gal Gadot could make. So, I went along to the opening night.

Typically, this is another Batman v Superman. Though, on this occasion, it is a better movie. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are back. But now they have included the Flash, Aquaman, and some cyborg guy. I don't know what the cyborg guy is bitching about, seeing as he was likely improved upon over his human self.

I have come home from the movies, had a sleep, and engaged in some computer games before writing this review. Therefore, I have already forgotten much of the plot. I also slept for about 5 minutes of the movie, and probably missed some key point of the plot. However, basically, Steppenwolf has made his return from some other dimension to take over Earth. He seems to have a history with the sexy Amazonian women and the Atlanteans (friends of Aquaman). He also knows about Kryptonians -- which means Superman has a ready-made enemy from before his childhood began. I think the story shows Steppenwolf going around trying to collect three boxes of power that have been hidden away on Earth. The boxes have something to do with the "end of days" scenario, where Steppenwolf wants to reconfigure Earth into some kind of demon friendly society.

If you don't mind movies of mind-numbing quality, you should like this one. I found it another rip-off of Marvel's Avengers, with some DC Comic flavour to distinguish it from one another. Ezra Miller seems out of place as the Flash. He was good enough as the character, though. What got me was the lack of concern that some of the Justice Leaguers had for the situation. It was like they were doing their thing as some kind of job. Wonder Woman started annoying me with her smirks seemingly not long after witnessing someone getting killed. It seemed that she smiled after she wasted a bad guy with her video game styled fighting skills. Moving like the Flash, punching about nearly as hard as Superman. I was starting to see her as some kind of sociopath.

I was over the movie the moment they started the action in front of a green screen climax scenes. As usual, the world governments were oblivious to the battle taking place. And it seemed like the Justice Leaguers were the only involved protagonists. All fight scenes were lonely affairs, and there were no -- other than some village near where the demons were flocking -- innocent bystanders.

Wait until the dvd becomes available to see this movie.

Sounds like the usual Comic SuperHero rubbish.
They're pumping them out like a factory processing line.

They really should have a good hard look at their own pathetic efforts. I really think they treat Americans as idiots.

Justice League.
8/10.

I didn't dislike Batman vs Superman.

Certainly the JL are similar to the Avengers, but they have more heart.  That is what makes this better than the Avengers movies.  Not as predictable or formulaic as the Marvel movies which Hollywood apart from Dr Strange are trying to ruin.

The young Flash tends to annoy a bit, but there is so much to like about this movie.  Not sure why Cyborg (a Teen Titan) was added to the cast, but he works well in this.  The Batman movies were mostly great, Wonder Woman was great, is great and I cant wait to see her in another movie.  Superman hold his own and shows us just why he is Superman and why he is a major part of the JL.  Aquaman works well and has a standalone movie coming out.  I'll go see it based on this alone.

Those  dumping on this movie need their heads read, or someone needs to check their bank accounts for Payola from Marvel.

Go see it, you'll enjoy it and you'll be left wanting to see more.

I gather that's just a straight males quote you've pinched there gweggy.

As an actress I think she is really good, and she made that part her own when before seeing it I wasn't sure she would be right for the part.  Like I said she won me over and no gweggy, I don't drool or wank over her, no matter what she's wearing.
Females are females, heterosexual males find them attractive and appealing, especially the good looking ones and and she certainly isn't unattractive.
Drooling and wanking is not compulsory.

I like Viggo Mort', but he was totally mis-casted as Aragorn.
Viggo is small, brunette, has a whispery-mumbling way of talking - which showed in the movie.
Aragorn was meant to be very tall (Strider), raven-haired, strong of voice.

It was like watching Steve Smith of Cricket trying to fill the role of Tony Lockett in AFL.  ::)

I did not hate Justice League. I think it was better than Batman v Superman. I just get sick of the overuse of cgi.

And an observation of movies in general, unless they are trying to get very artistic, they might just well use real backgrounds and cgi over them.

Because deep down, in reality - the 'Evil Empire' of Nazi's are really the good guys against the Jewish Jedi.  ;)

Saw it today with the Mrs,

ITs a good movie but its getting a bit long winded.

The Resistance!!!

The First Order!!!

etc etc.

I think that the "fight scenes" could have been better.

They are supposed to be Jedi ffs!

They should be like Matrix Fight scenes with slow mo now and again.

Lukes last scene was brilliant. Didn't see that one coming.

Humour was good to, made me chuckle many times.

There were points where I felt the hair stand up on the back of my neck and other times I felt quite emotional - and I don't even know why.  :-/

One like I didn't like was - PUNCH IT!!!

as the hit full throttle on a spaceship

I mean seriously, that was done and dusted in Alien.  ::)

Punch it Bishop!!!

Actually Han Solo first said "Punch it Chewie" before Aliens.

Anyway, I saw STAR WARS: The Last Jedi ...Jew
yesterday.
I must say I was disappointed. It was long and slow in many parts and most of all - saturated with many Jewish/Old Testament clichés that made the movie 'predictable' (yep, we've all seen them before  ::) ).
The most notable was the 'Burning Bush on the Mount' (*yawn).
Oh and then there was the 'Trump' cliché with the Ranga Imperial General Hux. Another 'red-head' male villan in Hollywood, along with the blonde males.  ::)

I'm sure in the last film, the Millenium Falcon will be destroyed - finally!
Carrie Fisher to appear CGI-like.
Kylo Ren & Rey will discover they're siblings and still try to kill each other.
Most of all, it will be more Jewish/old testament scenes and a plot that allows 'off-shoot' movie franchises to keep the money spinning.
Already they are underway for a series on the Adventures of Obi Wan Kenobi  ::) - oh bloody hell. :P

4/10 - only the special effects of interspace battles, etc really held the movie aloft amongst some pretty shallow characters and far-fetched situations.

I will be adding the blu ray copy to my collection. Though, I did find the movie quite appealing. I will probably take another look sometimes this week at TLJ -- as it is a tradition for me to watch Star Wars movies twice in the cinema before I wait the 3 months for the blu ray to become available and cheap enough for purchase.

I seriously thought that they were going to have to reshoot scenes for Leia, as Carrie had died after the completion of the film. One scene in the film, you could just assume that they were going to do something to make it fit the circumstances of reality with Carrie. But then it was like, "What? You aren't going that direction? How are you going to explain things in the next movie?" Unless the director finds a way to explain an absence of Leia in the next film, things are going to get awkward.

I did like the movie. It was better than The Force Awakens. But the humour they employed in the story seemed to be for the benefit of the stupid audience and their fanaticism for them to be catered with this humour. Humour that has a place in all of the movies. But recently, it seems that the humour is misplaced, or lacks the proper timing that had been shown in the original trilogy.

Though, the best thing about the movie was the direction it took. I feel that the movie was going the right way to a fresh perspective. If the last episode -- probably later followed by episode 10, 11, and 12 -- can follow this guide to perfect conclusion, it has been a redemption in the star wars universe.

Jack Taylor.

Based on Ken Bruen's noir series about an ex-Garda (Irish police) officer turned private investigator in Galway.

Unfortunately, though I looked forward to seeing this film, it did not capture the true noir of Jack Taylor, with his absolute cynicism and drinking to extreme and propensity for violence and some very deep and dark associates.  Instead it gave us a rather sensitive character who cared deeply without being sufficiently innured to violence and nastiness and prepared to go the whole hog when driven to it.  Damn - it didn't even explore his possession of his old Gard coat and the perpetual conflict between the Gardae and Jack over its return as a piece of state property.

Also missed out on posing 'Ridge' - the female Garda officer - as 'straight' rather than lesbian and somewhat confused about it, and instead substituting the interplay between the two, Jack and the lesbian, with a developing romantic style attachment of a younger woman to the older and worn Jack.

Also failed dismally in trying to put together too many Jack Taylor strands in one - the film was loosely - and I say loosely - based on 'The Magdalen Martyrs' - a much darker and hideous tale than that portrayed, and which did not involve directly Jack Taylor's mother.

Would have been better served in developing the conflict between mother and son over a series, rather than trying to cast the whole thing in a short-cut style of thing in one film and laying the entire blame for the mother/son matrix on the Magdelen upbringing that his mother did not have in the books.

Also did not develop in any meaningful way the conflict between Jack and Father Malachi, but sort of coasted along on the assumption that any viewer had read the books.

In terms of characterisation, the lead male did not carry the character noir of Jack Taylor.... too 'snaggy' and too given to walking the straight and narrow, whereas Bruen's Jack Taylor was content to breach the rules at the drop of a hat and to resort to violence of the third kind as often as necessary.

Far too soft for Our Jack in Galway and should have been more of the total drunk iconoclast sort of Jack Reacher type.

Should have been done as a series and not a film, and the director needs shooting.  I think it was somehow waylaid by an Irish kind of morality, where the lead character must in some way always be seen to be holy and somehow saintly, regardless of his actions.

All the money in the world

A fairly decent kidnapping movie. The story is based on JP Getty about his decision to not pay a ransom for his grandson. The story is embellished and changed for dramatic effect. Mark Walberg plays some negotiator who organises to try and reduce the ransom amount when it emerges that his employer, Getty, won't pay the $14 million ransom. Michelle Williams plays the mother of the kidnap victim, Paul. Christopher Plummer plays the role of JP Getty, the oil billionaire.

This movie was actually quite dull and did not hold much tension to interest me. Plummer was the only shining light in the movie, and he played his role with as much coldness as the role required. Wahlberg and Williams seemed both out of their element in this story. I felt that because of the re-write of the story with Plummer replacing Spacey, both Wahlberg and Williams seem tired from redoing their scenes.

Wait until this movie is out on dvd before watching it. You are not missing much.

Did you think that the movie could have worked just as well if the "downsizing" element was not there? I thought the resizing part of the story was there to suck people in to going to see the movie. As in, that there was the idea that there would be more interaction with full size and miniature people? I thought there would be trod on moments.

I think the movie tried to draw parallels with the two societies.   There are just as many shysters trying to make a buck in the big world as in the small.  I felt it also lost it's way with the ending and the impending methane gas wipeout of the world.

Avengers: Infinity War part 1

Quite the movie that I really wanted to see in the last few years. I think I first saw the posters for this two-part movie back in 2014. Having become more of a Marvel fan than a DC fan, I was really excited to see how this movie would turn out. Incidentally, with the Marvel movies of Avengers being played on television in the last few nights, it has helped with my appreciation of this movie.

Visually stunning, the CGI is quite impressive and accurate. Though, I do get sick of CGI's overuse, this movie seems to show restraint and the ability to only thoroughly use CGI with the green screen background in proportion to the special effects.

The storyline seems to be one of an Avenger investigation and then being on the defense as well as a counter to the villany of Thanos (or whatever his name). Unlike the first Avenger movie, this recent Avenger release shows that there is a defined villain (who is out to commit genocide through the universe), versus the Avengers who are "all hands on deck". Apparently, Captain America and his crew are forgiven for their 'misdeeds' from his time challenging Iron Man's authority. Each Avenger is basically loaded with tasks for trying to prevent the apocalypse of mass murder from eventuating. Even Loki shows respectibility in his part for trying to prevent Thanos' acquisition of stones.

Overall, the movie is a satisfying first part of a two-part movie experience. I should be happy to wait the 12 months to see second part of this epic movie.

2018 is shaping up to be a good year for movies.

Deep Horizon: Good to see American Actors do 'real' people and not this easy crap 'fictitious' Marvel/DC stuff. Even the great John Malcovich turned up to do an excellent and yet subtle as always 'flawed' character with good intention for BP wealth. Slow at the start but, like a volcano building - it eventually explodes in a big way. Always good to watch a movie based on 'real' life. In the USA - this is becoming a rare thing.

Alden did quite well with his portrayal as Han. I thought his voice could have done with some more convincing tuning towards Ford's voice. That nasal voice was so not Solo/Ford that it made whatever good work Alden did with the character and giving it a separate character.

I did fall asleep for 10 minutes part way through the movie. But I put that down to lack of sleep, rather than a lackluster film. 7/10 for the movie. Better than The Last Jedi.

Watched Heath Ledger as Ned Kelly on TV the other night. Well produced it started out looking good, and went rapidly down hill, ending in a ridiculous "Sam Pekinpah" bloody shoot-out. The gang, wearing matching suits of armor, splattering troopers using pairs of Remington Army revolvers. The only thing missing was Johnny Depp.

Solo...
A Star Wars Story... really?  Disney must think everyone is dumb.

Anyhoo...  6.5/7 out of 10.

But at no time during the movie did I think the lead actor was Han Solo.

Ever since I read you raving how much you liked The Watchmen film, I have realised we may not share all the same opinions, but our taste in movies does align pretty well.

My take on Solo is pretty similar to yours, maybe I enjoyed it more, because I came in with low expectations, so I would give it a solid 7.

One film I do like is American Assassin, and I guess my disdain for Islamist terrorists helped me jump on board the whole let's get the fekkers gung ho approach that it roars into from the get go. It does develop a little more complexity, which saves it from being to rah rah amerka to bare.
But for me, the smile it leaves you with was what pushed it over the line from run of the mill, to good.
I give American Assassin, 8/10, with a bullet.

This is in stark contrast to another film called "Unlocked", which is also Islamist Terrorism inspired plot, and I must admit that the first 30 minutes of the film, I was engaged, and hoping for good things. Then the "twist" came, which was blindingly obvious for all but snowflakes and alex jones fans, and it was all downhill from there.
Lefty snowflake apologist fantasy is something I just cannot stomach, so I gave,
"Unlocked", 3/10, which breaks down to 8/10 for the first 30 mins, and minus 5/10 for the rest of it.

I've never raved about Watchmen...

Solo?
I came in with very low expectations....  but I do like Emilia Clarke.
Best actor/character in this film....  Woody Harrelson "Beckett"

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea, maxima, culpa.

I guess I mixed you up with someone who liked Watchmen, sorry.
I like Watchmen a lot, at least the original uncut, not for short span of attention americans version, I do.

I just watched "Beirut".
Unsurprisingly, it is set in Beirut, about Beirut, and stars Jon Hamm, and Rosamund Pike.

It is pretty good. WW@W (well worf a watch)

The baddies are goodies, and the goodies are baddies, and the bad, are bad, and the good are good, and the Israelis are?  Arseholes. (I mean they can only stretch poetic licence so far)
I give it 7.4/10

You like Rosamund Pike...  then watch JACK REACHER (The One Shot) good movie, liked it a lot, more than The Watchmen, but like does not equate to RAVE...  not in my books.

Tried to watch the Man in the Iron Mask on TV tonight. Painfully dreadful. The script was not different than the usually cattle baron Western. Stupidly impossible sword play like a ninja movie, but I figured out why they do that in modern movies. Its because none of the actors have a frigging clue about real swordsmanship, and it would cost too much to train them.

I thought that the movie was better than I thought it would be. Turns out that Jurassic World 2 happened to have a better storyline than Jurassic World. Reviewers online have been very critical of the movie.

I'm not there.

The most boring arsed movie I have bothered with since I don't know when. Though well made, the movie does nothing other than to glamourise some nobody that has no place in the 21st century. Great for the 1960s nostalgists. But nothing more than something to pass the time for those hippy purists today. Dull as ****. No wonder I spent the last 10 years avoiding it.

Slept through part of the Seven Samurai movie. Quite a good movie. Though it is taking me forever to get through. I can see where the Magnificent Seven is a rip off of this movie. Some of the acting is overdone. The sound could have been better handled. But the movie looked visually quite good. I don't know if there is an equivalent remake of the Seven Samurai made in more recent years. If not, I hope the Japanese put together a remake of this movie soon.

The character of Aragorn was more fitting of someone like Sean Connery or Clive Owen (Raven haired, tall and 'strider' like), not some small petite brunette with a mumbling/whispering way of talking.
Viggo M. was totally miscast as Aragorn.

Calamity Jane

The local cinema is doing a couple sessions of old movies each fortnight. Last Monday was "Calamity Jane". I had heard of the movie in the past. In fact, I thought that I had seen part of the movie when I was a child. That was confirmed when I saw a scene where a white guy (Bill Hickok character) was dressed as a native American. Obviously, I had not been paying attention to the scene, and I had actually thought that this movie was doing a white-washing of Indians -- for a reason of a lack of actors of native American descent. It seemed humourous that an American movie would screw up the casting of some guy who was obviously so cowboy-ish with his mannerism and speech. But, I later found out that the character of Bill Hickok was actually making good his bet that Calamity Jane could not get a major city well-known stage singer/dancer to come out to such a remote location to perform at their local theatre. Found this out the hard way though a plot reveal in a review online. I recalled that 30 years earlier, I had the same idea, even with my mother telling me that the plot called for this minor scene.

On the topic of the movie, this was a good musical. Though, the musical is a bit too dated for modern tastes, it was likely good nostalgia for the elder members of my community. Doris Day seemed very goofy for her musical numbers. But, the songs were pleasant enough to watch and hear without being too repetitive. The song The Deadwood Stage set Calamity Jane as the tom-boyish personality that was to shape Jane's character early in the movie. However, her later songs such as Secret Love did show Jane mature as a character and redeem herself from earlier indiscretions.

If you don't like the goofy nature of these musicals, this movie is not for you. Any cinephile that enjoys a good musical, this movie should be high on your list of the must watch section.

Had some hours to spare between things and watched 'CAPTAIN MARVEL'.
Really good movie with the cliche twist of good guys are actually bad and bad guys are actually good.
Brie Larson portrayed a woman with PMT that lights her up, really well - to become the 'super-heroine' (did I say that? Are we allowed to say 'Heroine' away from calling women... men?).

Don't know much about the Super-hero (& heroine) rankings and status's. But I gather from this movie - that Captain Marvel (da woman!) is possibly the most 'POWERFUL' of them all, this side of 'DEADPOOL'.

Stay tuned, same Bat channel, same Bat time.

Dirty Harry

I have this movie at home on dvd. And although I could easily access this movie from my collection and watch it on the 40inch flat screen with my headphones, I wanted to watch the movie on the big screen in Birch Carroll and Coyle presentation. I did that on Monday night with 10 other people. Admittedly, the movie looked very good on the big screen. With the other audience members laughing along to the dark humour, the movie was all the more enjoyable.

It is a shame that we do not see these gritty movies being made in more numerous creations. Apparently, someone grabbed the movie producers by the balls in the 1990s and told them to go softly-softly with the way a movie is depicted.

Not my favourite Harry Callahan movie of the series. That one goes for The Enforcer, with Tyne Daly. But, this movie certain ranks as a close second. Andy Robinson did a good job as the serial killer. But sometimes Robinson went too overboard with his portrayal as Scorpio. Perhaps Scorpio begging for his life at the football field was some kind of ruse to trick Callahan. But it otherwise overdone.

8 out of 10.

Yes - it was 2/10 for me. Lot of 'visualisations' and pretty colours.
Captain Marvel was a male, these days - a female.
That's ok, I think it worked well.

You are a harsh critic, Jasin. I would have said a 7 out of 10 for the movie. But that might be generous. Perhaps 7 out of 10 average score for the visuals of the movie bumping up the rating for a fairly dull story and acting.

Seriously disappointed I are.

I recently purchased the English version of led miserables
The one that Gerard Depardieu starred in.
It was a series
But the English version was cut, cut to the core.
It was virtually unfathomable if you didn't know the book.

The French version was more complete and reasonably accurate to the book.

Now I'm going to have to purchase the French version, with subtitles, as I liked tgat one better.

I'm now starting to watch Red Dwarf again
I had forgotten how much I liked that series.

Last movie I saw was made in the USA.
It was about another Nation overseas and whose 'history' was changed to meet the Political Correctness of the USA.
Apparently, there was a 'Token Black Man' in existence back in that nation's Northern European past.
In fact, when-ever the USA (Hollywood) uses other nation's 'histories' - they change the historical accuracy to meet their own 'version'.

It seems the USA is going to 'take over the world' Politically and make the world just like them.
It's already 're-writing' other people's ...pasts. ::)

The Grand Budapest Hotel.  An interesting and rather quirky story by Wes Anderson with numerous cameo appearances from various actors in character parts.   My wife has been on me for some time to watch this so we settled down in front of the TV last night and watched a DVD of it.  Quirky is one way to describe it but it was interesting enough and funny enough to watch until the end.   Well worth seeing.   8-)

I watched this movie last Monday. A good movie. Although I had trouble coming to terms with the lack of police professionalism. Who the hell uses the phone of the victim who has just been found dead from strangulation?

I am sure any fan of Dirty Harry would love this movie. I did have trouble following the storyline in the first 30 minutes. But it got better from onwards. Give this movie a few watches before you judge for yourself whether it is worthy of classic status.

Yes it was. Did you like the part where the Prison Guard batons McQueen's head out from the Cell and says "He's dying"?
Well its at this point that the 'prison' has done its job and 'rehabilitation' can begin.
Something the Australian system has forgotten and now just 'educates' the Murderers to be even better.
