hes brought up a very good point in our society. Why do we laud aboriginal people for being able to do basic everyday things the rest of us take for granted? There was a study done where identical resumes where only the names were changed were given out and the effects measured.

I'll see if I can find it, but it should be too difficult.

Results were, traditional anglo names got the most call backs despite having identical qualifications and backgrounds.

What exactly are you saying here ian?  That racial profiling is committed across the board or that racial profiling is ok?

Its normal to pick names you feel comfortable with, I doubt whether the actual race of the applicants even entered the interviewers minds, this is not a case of racial profiling (which has its uses) Conversely, if they had applied for government jobs the Anglo names would have been tossed away.

Do you think that all aboriginal names are like Namatjira, Gulpilil, Galarrwuy, Gurrumul or Mandawuy Yunupingu, Mulrunji Doomadgee, Bennelong, Jacky Jacky, Pemulwuy, Truganini etc?

Most have anglo names now & very few are still tribal & having traditional names ....

though quite a few have bastardised their anglo names to make them sound like traditional aboriginal names. ::)

and how effective have these 'leg up' programs been?  utter failures.  You cannot help people who wont be helped.  we have incentive programs just to get these people to send their kids to school for a few days a month and then when they are 18 cannot get jobs because they cannot read and write their own name or count past 3.  if, after 200 years, you cannot convince these people to even go to school, then there is a long struggle ahead.  and it is their own fault; their own laziness born from a dysfunctional and failed culture.  the people themselves are fine.  their culture however, is not.
