A few mild insults and abuse I personally can accommodate without a problem SO LONG as these are accompanied by explanations relating to the subject of the discussion. Example: link My considered post is followed by four ad homs with no attempt to engage in discussion. And I ask myself : "What the bugger am I wasting my time here for?" |

A few of the members use Ozpolitic as a scribble pad and think they're being very clever with their thoughtless one liners and abuse. They haven't got the brain matter unfortunately to put into civil words why they disagree with someone's opinion. It's easier to be personally abusive to shut their opponent up. The standards have been higher here, but it depends who the moderators are at any given time and if they choose to enforce the boundaries. Some of those in the past wouldn't have tolerated the crap we see today. You have to try and deal with the trolls the best way you can Herbert and not expect anything much from the moderators. The few we have are rarely here and unless they have similar standards to you, you're going to be ignored. The solution would be to appoint a GM, or two, who actually cares about this forum and maintaining some standards, but FD seems to avoid these people - perhaps for commercial reasons, who knows. Concentrate on those who give positive feedback and ignore the others Herbert. If it gets too bad, save some of the posts with links and send them to FD. It can be effective. |

Can someone tell me what trolling is? This is a PUBLIC POLITICAL forum. From what I understand, public means everybody's invited to have a say ( you know, demcracy). Political means at times discussing substantive issues, perhaps passionately. Some exchanges will be pleasant, others not so. To give an example, I posted a thread in criticism of Whitlam's government- I was called a troll on numerous occasions. There are threads which are essentially dominated by the same 4 or 5 people, if you join in you're called a troll. If you respond to some of the moutrageous leftist dribble, the Marxist mafia will all sing TROLL in chorus.
Is troll just another sling to throw at someone you disagree with/don't like in the same vein as racist/islamophobe/misogynist etc? |

I have now been watching this thread with some interest because I, myself, have been the subject of occasional attention of those that some would classify as 'trolls' or 'trolling'. I suppose on occasion that I represent, or am deemed as representing, all the things that Herbert now stands accused of by his detractors. After all, I'm pro-gun, anti-Islam, anti-radical, white, agnostic and heterosexual. This comment is made in the spirit of things because I am aware of a number of other posters who could make the same claims. You all know who you are. The reason Herb becomes an item of interest to what he labels 'trolls' is possibly because he is a prolific poster and starts a number of threads with a provocative headline, or, frequently responds to other posters with a humour that they either misinterpret or cannot understand. I enjoy the understated humour and the effort taken to compile some of his posts. The 'sensai' remarks are an example. As a fiurther example, I have a long term love/hate relationship with Brian Ross that rarely descends into the type of flaming that I have seen Herbert (or others) endure. We have a relationship that is often compromised by my ability/reluctance to engage in in issues where we already know each other's stance and see no point in pushing the issue. We can debate/argue without the spiteful exchanges that I have seen others endure on an almost daily basis. Yet Brian and I can maintain an interesting dialogue without resorting to personal insult. Datalife is another poster whose posts I enjoy because he often offers a thoughtful opinion on diverse subjects. Yet he often gets flamed for offering a different point of view. Again, one wonders whether the points made are considered, or merely rejected and criticised because they differ from the viewpoint of the flamer. I tend to ignore 'trolls', simply because the nuances of the English language tend to be lost on them and sarcasm is very hard to convey in the written language. I think that most of us here are aware of the'usual suspects' but are reluctant to engage because - what is the point? By the same token, I'm not above the occasional caustic comment myself. However, that is often just a knee-jerk reaction to those who who would bring a knife to a gun-fight. Just sayin'. |

Bobby is extremely tolerant. If someone continuously disrupted threads to call me a lesbian, I would have had something done about it a long time ago. He's made 30,000 posts in 2 years, the majority of them insulting and he's only just being noticed.

The obvious and easiest will be totally ignored. No that would be too easy and it might actually eliminate the whining in Feedback..we can't have that can we, that might result in something along the lines of peace forum wide and less work for mod's.
That is not directed at any one mod..but it might be something to take on board by all mod's. I remember when I had one troll that had sniped nastily at me for years on end- and then one day a mod ( Annie ) told him to pull his stupid head in- he then left me alone. I am grateful to her - proof that warning pp does work. Warn 3 times and then ban. |

It's hard to please everyone. Forums are either over-moderated or under-moderated. Very few have a perfect balance.
People tend to leave a forum if it is over-moderated and it quickly becomes a wasteland. On the other hand, they tend to hang around and voice their displeasure if the moderation appears light handed. No win either way. It wouldn't hurt (and would possibly help) if some degree of information is expressed to the members if and when action is taken against serial pests. Names don't have to be mentioned. |

Mr Ross, I am under no illusion about how Herbert operates. I dubbed him Walter Mitty for very justifiable reasons. The bloke simply manufactures a past and then attempts to feed off it. He is also pretty much a dirty old man with his eternal sexual innuendos....'smelling like fish' being his latest. But, the bloke has a place, yet he seems totally oblivious to what he is up to. You reckon he is deliberate? Well, I suppose that could be true. He got away with it at Debate & Relate because he had obviously curried favour with the Management there (especially with the American bloke and his Australian Bride...the names escape me,) and he was allowed free reign. When someone like me strolled into that place and saw/experienced the obvious manipulation of Membership (some stupid scary Mod......Doolan....?? was always going to come along and do the dirty ban work as though he was not actually the Management) and naked bigotry, I was never going to last, and I didn't.
The outcome is self evidence of how dumb that Management was. The Forum (as it was) is gone, it deserved that outcome, and Walter, Elde Fruit, you made a not insubstantial contribution to its demise. The GMs here need to keep all that in mind. "Uncle Herbert" truly is the ultimate Troll. |

It's pretty sad how badly this thread has degenerated.
Everyone has their own perceptions of a troll and Herbert is not what I would term a troll. He does not appear to follow people from thread to thread making snide and insulting comments nor does he analyse their perceived personality flaws ad nauseam. If you don't like what he has to say, say so and move on. Making long and personally insulting posts is petty and those making such posts should hold the mirror up to their own behaviour. Some of these posts are just plain nasty. Jealousy perhaps? |

Orchid- I have "known" (in a cyber sense), Aussie a long time- on the whole I like him, but he is very obsessive- its best to just state your truth with back up , and then completely disengage- he can pursue nitpicking arguement's forever trying to prove a "point" because he is bored. Aussie is like a dog with a bone and better ignored for your own peace of mind.

Funny how the people accusing Herb of being a troll normally post no more than 1 line rebuttals containing personal insults while Herb makes extensive and thought out well linked posts (which I usually dont agree with) , he is actually the exact type of poster this forum needs in order to create effective discussion and debate. Never parades his ego by claiming extraordinary experiences and qualifications and is very mild in response to the pitchfork mob. I love Herbs posts, Im getting a bit tired of the 1 liners in response though and the endless calls for people to be banned. Very childish.

By the widely broad brush stroke standards most seem to use to describe a "troll" it would seem that ALL posters on this forum are trolls. The obvious consequence to all that would seem to be that the OP has inadvertently finally got a thread topic to appear almost accurate. Accidental genius per chance. Comments on the length of replies would seem to be idiotic. Content is far more important the quantity - and I say that as someone who is knowingly quite verbose in response at times. Some of the shorter responses often hit the nail on the head, without need for convoluted or lengthy diatribe. Content. I catch myself out at times wasting time (cause that is what it all boils down to) throwing a witty one liner (well intended as witty) back to a comment that deserves (in my opinion and, let's be honest, it is an internet forum, hence it is all about opinion and bares little relationship to fact, critical thinking, integrity or honesty) nothing more. I say catch myself, because often times, the post may not even deserve that much. Hence, I usually do not bother, it just isn't worth it. The overall message from this thread (not just for the OP, BUT most assuredly including him) would seem to be that currently ALL posters (pretty much) have stooped to troll status with a bit of monotonous regularity. Personally, I think that is because it would seem that ALL forums (well in my experience all political based forums) seem to be magnates for such strongly opinionated and arrogant people that acknowledging a wrong position is beyond them, so, they must stoop to conquer. In general I include myself as well before any trolls jump on board that comment with their hackles raised and claws extended. Although, I will allow one caveat there, I have admitted error and also apologised in the past. If any here are capable of demonstrating some honest self reflection, you have a brilliant opportunity right here and right now to evidence this by going over just your own contributions and being as diligently critical of your own efforts as seems to be the case when judging others posts. As to abuse (which also gets a good run), it seems a pretty straight forward thing to me, but then maybe I have an advantage (I say maybe quite deliberately) in that I have worked with behaviour for many years. Here is one example of an idea that makes abuse fairly obvious. Say a response to something you think is not very clever.... One could say, "that is a ridiculous comment".... Or they could say, "you are ridiculous...." Fairly basically, one is abusive, the other is an observation. I personally think it does not take much nouse to work out which is which. Yet, we still have some issue around abuse - which apparently is related to Trolling. Like many, I come to forums to relax, unwind and/or if lucky have a laugh. Having said that, it doesn't automatically give me license to be nasty, abusive or derogatory to some - yet, I have seen that alluded to by some who, simply put, seem to have to defend their tawdry position. Trolling perhaps has reached epic proportions, however, Poor bugger me OP is not the sole hapless victim, nor, as has been suggested, is he the worst offender, albeit he is at times offensive and trollish. I would suggest, as I have been doing, we most likely all are. Growing up might be a good starting point folks. A different opinion is just a different opinion and not necessarily a cause for offense. The tit for tat rubbish though is very sub standard - with no winners and only the board suffers. I don't think there are any winners in this thread for example, that is my opinion and I embrace your right to disagree with it, whether that be in one line or over several posts - I would though, respectfully, ask you to at least attempt a modicum of self reflection before hitting the post button... |

Moderators, is it possible to move the domestic arguments now dominating this thread to a more appropriate place?
It has now become intolerable as it has come to dominate the OP about trolls. Whilst I realise that this could be considered an appropriate arena for such ventings, it has rather polluted the quite genuine exchanges that were taking place beforehand. Thanking you in advance. ;D |
