CONTROVERSIAL cartoonist Larry Pickering has been placed under protective surveillance by counter terrorism police after he posted a derogatory picture depicting the prophet Muhammad on his website.

Mr Pickering was visited at home by detectives from Queensland Police on Sunday evening.

The officers, who arrived unannounced, said Mr Pickering had “upset a lot of people” and they were putting the four-time Walkley Award-winning cartoonist under high-priority protective surveillance.

“They didn’t say specifically why they were there,” Mr Pickering said.

“I guess they must have picked up some intelligence or chatter after I did the cartoon.

“They gave me their details and special phone numbers and said if I call they will be there in minutes.”

All power to Abbott, but it won't be him that cops the brunt of his slurs, it will be some unfortunate shoppers at Westfield or whatever that gets the payback. Words are cheap when you can hide behind armed cops and security agents. Same with Pickering, if and when hey come for him some cops and bystanders will pay for his  so called bravery.

Great idea. I think you'll find Cods that this isn't about cartoons at all. ISIS has put out directives all around the world to do terrorists attacks. This was one of them. If it wasn't directed at these people it would have been done to somebody else. Stopping Mo pictures won't stop the terrorism.

People deaths are never worth it. But it exposed a serious problem and something good will come out of it. I doubt a liberal country like France will have some nutbag religion tell them they can't draw their religious figure or we'll kill you.

Some people react better to being abused than others.  If I ask that you not abuse me, and you continue, then don't be surprised is I react badly in your direction.  That's a natural enough, human reaction.

Yep it sure seems to fit that satire is a form a abuse, no question there. The irony is that historically, Satire came about in response to abuses of power, namely by the church and/or state....

It was, in effect, the only come back the "commoners" had to play with. Perhaps it still is.

Now any satirist can pick any target they like, as is evidenced by the amount of satire available and the myriad targets presented. Sad but true.

To my mind all satire needs to be viewed on a case by case basis - and even then still not silenced.

A voice of dissent is a powerful foundation of democracy and freedom - a lone voice of dissent even.

To silence dissenters is to become fascists. To practice satire is most certainly an act to poke the bear as it were. Many satirists though, do so with good reason.

Let's face it, the terrorist situation of the modern world has demonstrably brought the worst out in people (other than the worst on display by terrorists I mean), however, there are also examples of the best too.

To my mind our media (or sham that purports to be media) needs a shake up. Not a ban, not censorship - there are very few examples of appropriate censorship after all, but a media shake up would not hurt. Give us all of the news in full, rather than the "coke" add snippets of cherry picked information designed to do nothing more than form public opinion. If it is soundbite news then it is no news at all.

All true.  Another option, is to heed the reasonable request not to abuse/ridicule/target with satire.

the problem was this magazine had had many threats they even had the police on their doorstep.. not that that stopped them getting in....

this isnt threatening to bash someone....this is armed men killing unarmed staff...

if the staff had had guns at least you could say they had a small chance   but they are sitting ducks...

Getting down to the nitty gritty there.  It is  not so much the cartoon per se, is it.  It is the naked abuse of a mainstream religion going back centuries trying to hide the attack as 'Oh, it's just a cartoon.'  Bullshite!  It is lampooning, putting shite upon, ridiculing, rendering scornful, inciting hatred against a faith.

when I hear people condemning similar cartoons about Christ then I will care a bit more.  Offensive, yes.  Unnecessary, yes.  But I cant find much enthusiasm to care a week after 12 people were killed for doing so.  IN fact, it feels a lot like payback.

Last I heard it still an offence to vilify etc on racial grounds.  Religion is another thing.  It is not the cartoon which per se is the problem.  Cartoons are meant to be funny.  These cartoons are specifically designed, drawn and published to mock, abuse, deride and ridicule an entire religion, one I could not give a stuff about.  Why does anyone else?  'Funnily' enough, it seems some of those who adhere to it don't seem to share the 'Joke.'  Bizarre, innit?

I don't see the problem in that cartoon at all.  In fact it is a little lame. If it is okay to lampoon Christianity then it is okay to lampoon islam and any others.

It seems the lefties don't give a hoot about the Paris attack, they sort of have the feeling that it's a religious war, it was bound to happen and have come to the sensible conclusion that it will happen again, some time, some place......best not get involved.

The righties want the lefties to get involved for some reason, maybe because they're shaking in their slippers and don't quite know what to do.

It looks like you're on your own righties, fight your own religious war, we will just get on with our lives and if we end up being a victim of a fanatical Muslim, so be it.

Aaaah! that's because I look on each situation individually, whereas you are a blanket thrower.

I believe people should have the right to smoke on their own balcony.

I am not afraid of Muslim terrorists because........just because I'm not. Somehow I just don't think it will be fanatical Muslims that will knock me off my perch, I could be wrong but I doubt it.

I let those who are affected worry about it, like Pickering, I couldn't care less if a crazy Muslim gets him because in my opinion he's asking for it, whereas I am not.
