Title: Visitor, members and being welcome
Post by nasus on Jan 15th, 2015 at 7:44pm
This is the second time I am using the phrase New kid on the Block.
Looking at the topics, they are extremely interesting and a variety of views are represented. Look closely and you will find, most are between two or three opposing sides, most and I mean most are from members that have been here since the dawning of Aquarius. the topics are open, we can all join in, I assume, but they possibly resent the intrusion as the are "Gold Members". Ok, not an issue.
Visitors, there are more  visitors that members at most times, why, they, we, I won't bite, come join the discussions and make it that much more interesting.
I have over the years joined a few forums. Most, sorry all bar this one go out of there way to make you feel welcome before they attack you. They on mass send messages of greetings, telling you it's great to have you on board, (which is a lie) but on this forum, no such greetings, (bar one) they just jump on you and it's on for young and old. No holds barred. Ok, but possibly that's why so early in the evening so few members are online, everyone attacks everyone else. Two camps and a few others who tell it as it is. So come join the fun, but now at least you have some understanding of the rules.
NB: Note that many members here have a gizzzzillion posts, and you are on the first one, be brave, what's the worst that can happen!  :o, horror. Hope it gets better.  ;)

This is odd - I've never seen you until today, let alone bitten a chunk out of you.  I try to reserve my vitriol for politicians and their running dogs...... though I will bite a dummy at times.

Thanks, Yep, saw that newbies thread, however being new at the last entry was a REPLY button (not a new post button) silly me, I was not making a reply I was wanting to say hello. Took me a while to work that out later, must stop drinking during postings at night, lol.
Attack en mass is that what I did in my post, well being right wing liberal can do that. Greetings.  :)

good, the rightards need all the help they can get .... they're not having a good year with Abbott doing the same things they complained about Gillard doing, except 10 times worse  ;D ;D ;D ;D

A quick word of advice-the Stalinists go feral at the appearance of the term 'liberal', Oh no, did someone say 'mattresses'?

You poor dear, never mind, that affliction can be cured, plenty have fully recovered since Abbott got in.

I do not think that this is correct, the vast majority welcome new ideas and new people. The gold member is not seen as a symbol of status. As far as I can tell its only function is to limit some functions for the first 100 or so posts in order to discourage automated bots.

I think the primary reason some new members have a hard time is because of the prevalence of repeat abusers who come up with a different username in order to troll with greater effect.

It is too easy to assume that a new member is not really a new member.

I would have thought that the Moderators would stop any member posting under another name, would be the same IP address. Anyone who wants another identity would need to travel to new location every time they wanted to post. Guess they have one at work and one at home. Also I assume we all have writing styles that would make it bloody obvious it's from the same person, they also need a good memory to continue the thread. Easier just being one identity, that way there is no need to remember what your last reply was.  :o

Nasus, resetting your IP address is very easy. To find out the identity of 'socks' would require involvement by the police. Better everyone be able to express themselves freely. Also, we have our den mother Cods to keep everything civilised.

Thank you for all the greetings, just like home now, feeling all fuzzy. There are many good forums, however some are much more tolerant than others to new comers, some old timers on them down right become hostile, especially if one holds a different point of view, or catches the old timers out in some of their posts, showing that they either manipulated facts or just know more about a given subject. Some even go crying to moderators and throw a hissy fits. Once they get rid of a particular person, IT is a strange world we live in.  ;D

Actually I am pretty computer savvy and IP address from the same service provider is impossible, or so I thought. Googled it and have not found a way to change the address. Thanks, I will keep looking.

There are usually 3 people at least hiding behind my public IP, if the others chose to join here, the ip address for all would appear the same. Then you have schools or businesses that can have hundreds behind their public ip.

I have a static ip, many(most?) have dynamic ips and disconnecting for 15 mins or so will almost guarantee you get a different ip next time you connect. This is why ip blocking is useless.

I have tried the 15 minute disconnect, did not work. Then did overnight, that did not work. Over Christmas I even went away for a few days, turned the sever off, unplugged, all off, return. same address today.

Then your ISP is probably handing out static IPs, like mine. What ISP do you use? I'm with Exetel. It's the ADSL router that needs to be turned off.

A lot now do give you a static IP and this is mostly a good thing as it allows things like dynamic DNS to work.

Dynamic DNS was made for dynamic IPs. If you have a static IP it allows real DNS.
