Jurien Bay supermarket fined for illegally employing child

Date
    January 15, 2015
    WA Today               :(

Operators of a supermarket in the WA holiday hotspot of Jurien Bay have been fined $2250 for illegally employing an 11-year-old girl as a shop assistant.

The company, MMG (WA) Pty Ltd which trades as the Jurien Bay IGA, faced the Perth Industrial Magistrate's Court on Wednesday after being charged with the breaches.

The court heard the child worked five shifts on weekends during August 2014.

Under the Children and Community Services Act 2004, it is illegal for businesses in the retail industry to employ children younger than 13 years.   :(

Retail employers may employ children aged between 13 and 15 years, but must not allow them to work before 6am or later than 10pm and must also obtain written permission from the child's parent or guardian.

Department of Commerce Labour Relations Division acting executive director Joseph Lee said the prosecution should serve as a timely reminder to all employers of their legal obligations, especially during school holidays.

"Of particular concern in this matter is the very young age of the child concerned," Mr Lee said.

He urged employers wanting to check their employment obligations to contact Wageline on 1300 655 266. Wageline is free and confidential.

They've got to be joking.

Ever since the ethnics arrived in great number in the mid-50's and thereafter, ethnic shopkeepers have had their toddlers serving customers at the Corner Shops and the little family stores.

Little ethnic ankle-biters have been serving me since I arrived here for a holiday in 1961 when I lost my passport.

The mothers - all in black, and with a single eye-brow extending across the full width of the forehead - would be lurking somewhere at the back of the shop - occasionally shouting instructions in Greek or Arabic to the infant at the cash register.

How PREDICTABLE of you - turning it into a RACIAL SLUR

There is NOTHING ILLEGAL with children of family owned businesses assisting in the operation of that business, outside of school hours

This 11 year old was NOT a family member

There is NOTHING to indicate this business was owned by "ethnics" as you would put it

I had a pizza delivered to me by a little Italian toddler in a smart double-breasted Mafia suit and a fedora the other day.

Did I complain?

He was also carrying a 1930's Thompson submachine gun and had his cheeks stuffed with cotton-wool ...

Nothing.  Absolutely nothing.

However, Herbie hasn't been the same since they took Bindi's Bootcamp off air.

He's writing a letter of complaint to the ABC, as we speak.

Crookie, in your rush to get to press with your latest news I wish you would do the proof-reading on your headlines first.

BTW, looking at the politics board today, I can see some more anti-crookie protests coming up soon.
