Personally I don't agree with prisoners sitting around for 9 years in prison waiting to be shot.
If found guilty - execute them as soon as possible. "[This is] because Indonesia has become the biggest market in south-east Asia," Mr Prasetyo said, adding that up to 50 Indonesians a day die from drugs. "Forty-five per cent of all drugs productions is for Indonesia. That's astonishing. "There are so many victims and most of them are young people, productive age. I'm very concerned about this." Mr Prasetyo said the Australian Government had not pressured Indonesia to grant clemency". link |

In China that is exactly what they do to convicted criminals, found guilty, shot within the week, family sent account for the bullet to the head. No wasting time, no or very few appeals for their citizens, should be more of it. Unfortunately in China there legal system and courts are play things, hence being found guilty by them in not a real conviction, just unfortunate. Then again what legal system is faultless, always a system for the rich, then a system for the poor.
The Bali nine so soon after Miss Corby was caught should have woken them up. Maybe when they are executed it might send a stronger message. |

Highly unlikely. Wei Qingan (Chinese: 魏清安, ?-1984, 23 years old): a Chinese citizen who was executed for the rape of Liu, a woman who had disappeared. The execution was carried out on 3 May 1984 by the Intermediate People's court. In the next month, Tian Yuxiu (田玉修) was arrested and admitted that he had committed the rape. Three years later, Wei was officially declared innocent. Teng Xingshan (Chinese: 滕兴善, ?-1989): a Chinese citizen who was executed for supposedly having raped, robbed and murdered Shi Xiaorong (石小荣), a woman who had disappeared. An old man found a dismembered body, and incompetent police forensics claimed to have matched the body to the photo of the missing Shi Xiaorong. The execution was carried out on 28 January 1989 by the Huaihua Intermediate People's court. In 1993, the previously missing woman returned to the village, saying she had been kidnapped to Shandong. The absolute innocence of the wrongfully executed Teng was not admitted until 2005. Nie Shubin (Chinese: 聂树斌, 1974-1995): a Chinese citizen who was executed for the rape and murder of Kang Juhua (康菊花), a woman in her thirties. The execution was carried out on April 27, 1995 by the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's court. In 2005, ten years after the execution, Wang Shujin (Chinese: 王书金) admitted to the police that, in fact, he had committed the murder. |

Why is it and whom decides that the death penalty is barbaric. "the enlightened ones"
I cannot comprehend when some kills another persons children and the first thing the aggrieved parents do is go on television and say they forgive the criminal, that is not barbaric, it weak. Criminals and nation like weak people, weak people become targets, an easy crime, weak nation disappear. The Bali nine knew if caught they could be executed, hence, execute them. If that does not send a message, execute the next group. The numbers will dwindle. I am staggered that there are nations on this planet, Scandinavian countries who have a maximum penalty of 25 years for murder, 1 person or 101. How pathetic. |

Yet here we have in Australia the Indonesian, John Basikbasik, who murdered his wife and unborn child by bashing them to death with a bike and what do we do?
We not only release him from prison we have human rights watchdog, Gillian Triggs, lobbying to pay him $350,000 in compensation for "loss of liberty, loss of freedom and injury to feelings"? No wonder the Indos think we are a country of pathetic losers. Anyone stupid enough to try to run drugs in a country where the penalty is death would certainly fit their opinion of us. |

What the hell is a civilised person or state. Individuals who are civilised, I need to meet some of them. once their child had died of drug overdose by traffickers who could not give a stuff. Or had someone they love murdered or raped and left lifeless by the side of the road by a drug user, high on whatever it is now day, crack. Possibly these civilised people may not be quite as forgiving. I believe the Romans an Greeks 2000 years ago were civilised, as were the Muslims. Their philosophy, buildings, paintings, inspiring. 2000 years ago they killed like it was going out of fashion. Hence being civilised equals no more death penalty, just slaughter a nation, start a war. I think the Chinese consider themselves civilised. 1500 years ago when the British where still in the stone age living in huts, the Chinese built cites, had laws, gunpowder. Hence being civilised means something else, not sure what, possibly being weak. To many do gooders have taken over the country and leave it wide open to be invaded. |

Because they didn't think they would get caught in Indonesia, and the penalties for getting caught in Australia was worth the risk of becoming rich overnight. It's a great deterrent in that they won't be doing this sort of thing again. And then again, the law is all about punishment - not deterrence. Our courts are there to punish. The law itself is the deterrent, and if people choose to ignore that warning, then be it on their own head. |

If the DP were a deterrent then states that use it would see a drop in capital crimes except the opposite is true. The very best result obtained is NO CHANGE. Only in USA is that reason to continue. Only in the USA is the existence of compelling new evidence pointing to innocence inadmissaable in a capital case after appeals nor a reason for delaying an execution. DP supporters are by and large, bloodthirsty or gullible. Or often, both. |

There is not the slightest doubt in my mind that the Australian government knows it spends virtually nothing on preventing drugs from being smuggled into Australia by the tonne. There are no where near enough sniffer-dogs and their handlers employed at the wharves and airports. Only one container out of xyz number actually gets checked by our customs officers. The inspectors are hopelessly under-staffed with the full knowledge of our successive governments. The drugs trade is virtually sponsored by government neglect and inaction in this regard. |

Customs go by invoices with the shipping documents, if the importer is importing from someone with an approved supplier code like Revlon those containers will not be opened up. Try importing something from Asia without an approved supplier code from the exporter and see what happens, I bet it gets searched. First thing customs do is check the invoices and who is the supplier and exporter of the goods,if they don't have an approved supplier code they are likely to be searched. |

that's a bit unreasonable don't you think not to mention that every other country is worse. How do you inspect EVERYTHING coming into the country. search every container, open every box, pull apart everything? random searches get some results but are mainly there to demonstrate that there really IS a risk of being caught. IN addition, there are mainly intelligence operations to combat the problem in the first place. I agree we need more effort, but to claim we are not doing anything is silly. |

People can be executed for drawing a cartoon and for any other small indiscretion. BUT governments are not allowed to execute prisoners who have been found guilty of some horrendous crime? I have got that right then? May I also point out if you are mentioning the 19th Centaury, the 1800 hundreds we are including the very end of French Revolution, yes in early 1800 there was still some reprisals, then God knows how many other tens of Millions of people where hanged in England who were not fortunate enough to be deported to this lovely country. It's why the Bali 9 knew that all they had to do was make landfall on Australian soil and the penalty if caught would make the risk worthwhile to become rich overnight. Our government and judiciary are the Silent Partners in the drugs trade for making it so attractive as a Risk Venture enterprise. Successive Australian governments no more want to deal with the drugs trade than they do with clamping down on our Muslim Ghetto Community and sanitising it with some hardline rules. |

Herb - you Victorian numbers are irrelevant as they were flying into Sydney and the amphetamines data is also irrelevant as they were not importing this drug. It is worth noting however that the NSW penalties for amphetamines were substantially more severe than the old Vic numbers showing that for the group on this topic the penalty would be higher still. |

Actually quite the opposite, Athos. The Anglo leadership both here and in Britain are far more reluctant to come down hard on ethnics than they are on their own people. There's the imperative to always be seen as non-racist towards ethnics and non-partisan towards one's own Anglo kith and kin. |

The sooner they are (disposed off) the better. I was going to write the sooner they are shot the better, I did not just in case this was politically incorrect. Lol. It's only a 9mm.
