They would still be alive. Because they would all be in jail for anti-semitism.

It just demonstrates that purported free speech is an illusion created to placate the masses.

There is no free speech and the only reason Charlie Hebdo mocks Muslims is because it matches French government conduct.

Sorry - not up on French law - would they really be in prison for sending up Judaism?

I'd say the result would be a laugh and a shake of the head from the authorities..then move on...

Unlike Muslim fanatics......

My great-great grandparents from Germany were Jews - not ONE ever was violent or in any way anything but a solid member of the community.

Seeing as how they arrived here in the 1850's - I'd say some of you have benefited from their work.... and their defence of this country over the years....

Yes, very true. However, simply drawing satirical cartoons about Jewish people might lead to a court case, just as drawing satirical cartoons about Mohammed 'should have' resulted in court case.

But, I gather it is okay to systematically satirically take the piss out of Islamic History or characters, but it is not similarly okay to take the piss out of Jewish History or characters.

I would say so...as I have seen many cartoons taking the piss out of Old Testament characters.
Moses is a favourite target for satire and parody for one.

in AMerica they think its ok to kill unarmed people..

In Indonesia they think its ok to KILL drug runners..

in Australia some people think its ok to KILL someone for daring to ask for a magazine to stop printing a cartoon .. infringement of the freedom of speech.. ::) ::)

this is all about choices.....the magazine knew is was a dangerous thing to do... ::) ::)

there was also a British show I liked but havent seen for a long time.. also a Muslim also the funniest...

I think you might be making the standard mistake of calling anyone from the middle east a Muslim. If they don't follow the Koran they are pretending, that is unless they are from one of the minorities. The perception has something like racist implications. An Arab living in the west who has adopted western liberalism is not a Muslim.

There's humour, then there's outright insult.

Legally Brown are making fun of themselves, much like the Kumers of Number whatever (Indian) and George Kapiniaris (Greek), it's different to western dudes insulting their Muslim prophet. I'm sure even the Muslims can laugh at themselves, just not make fun of their prophet.

If you were not allowed to because you had lost your freedom of speech, would that be a big deal? Or are principles like this beyond your comprehension? Isn't it you who writes insulting letters to catholic priests? Would it be a big deal if they threatened to kill you for it? Or would you offer them your children in appeasement?

I think holocaust denial is only a criminal offence in Germany. While I disagree, I do understand it. Germany is at great pains to put its nazi past well behind it.

You're going to find that a tad difficult as every 2nd Muslim is named Mohammed.

If drawing him, humorously or satirically & making any criticism of him is intolerable/blasphemous because of his reverence ...... then why do they think it reasonable & that any one them are worthy to call themselves Mohammed?

If you applied their extreme views to that ... it should be blasphemy.

I take it that when I say Muhammed you all know I'm referring to the prophet, not my doctor or the next door neighbour.

I have lost nothing because I never wanted to publish crude cartoons about Muhammed or Jesus or any other prophet.

I have never written an insulting letter to a priest, I actually wrote to the Catholic Church which is an organisation, and it wasn't insulting, it was telling them that it's time they had a more open and transparent approach to pedophilia within the church.
