Fox News apologises for terror pundit’s ‘Birmingham totally Muslim’ comments

Steven Emerson was labelled ‘a complete idiot’ by Cameron and mocked on Twitter after saying city was no-go area for non-Muslims

US TV channel Fox News has made an on-air apology after a terrorism pundit described Birmingham as a no-go area for non-Muslims.

Steven Emerson, billed as an expert on terrorism-related issues, was described by the prime minister, David Cameron, as “a complete idiot” and was widely mocked by Twitter users after informing viewers the city was “totally Muslim” and was not visited by people of other faiths.

Emerson issued a string of apologies to British media outlets over his “terrible, inexcusable error” during a broadcast last weekend and has also donated £500 to the city’s children’s hospital.

Fox News presenter Julie Banderas told viewers: “Over the course of this last week we have made some regrettable errors on air, regarding the Muslim population in Europe, particularly with regard to England and France.

“This applies especially to discussions of so-called no-go zones, areas where non-Muslims allegedly aren’t allowed in, and police supposedly won’t go.

“To be clear, there is no formal designation of these zones in either country, and no credible information to support the assertion there are specific areas in these countries that exclude individuals based solely on their religion...

;D

Birmingham a "no-go area for non-Muslims"? Tell that to the 78% of residents who are non-Muslim!   ;D

Quote:
...Issuing the apology presenter Jeanine Pirro, who was interviewing Mr Emerson when he made the claims, said a guest had made "a series of factual errors that we wrongly let stand unchallenged and uncorrected."

"The guest asserted that the city of Birmingham, England, is totally Muslim and that it is a place where non-Muslims don't go," she said.

"Both are incorrect."

She went on to say census data from 2011 indicated 22% of the population of Birmingham identified themselves as Muslim.

"We could find nothing that indicated Birmingham is a so-called no-go zone.

"We deeply regret these errors and apologise to the people of Birmingham, our viewers and all who have been offended."

Mr Emerson's comments led to a Twitter backlash with the hashtag Fox News Facts trending with people inventing humorous "facts".

He has the freedom to be an idiot.

Foxnews has the freedom to lose its credibility - the reason they apologised is because their credibility was at stake (not that they have much to start with).

In this case, other media outlets held them accountable, but they usually let a lot of Foxnews lies and misinformation pass under the radar.

Is telling lies more than 80% of the time OK for something that calls itself 'news'?

Rupert Murdoch; screwing with your democracy since Andrew Bolt was in diapers.

Some of Foxnews' recent lies:

STEVEN EMERSON:
"There are actual cities" like Birmingham, England, "that are totally Muslim where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in."

JOHN STOSSEL:
"There is no good data showing secondhand smoke kills people."

GEORGE WILL:
Some doctors say Ebola can be transmitted through the air by "a sneeze or some cough."

PETER KING:
"In 2011, (the Islamic State) attempted to attack Fort Knox."

STEVE DOOCY:
"NASA scientists fudged the numbers to make 1998 the hottest year to overstate the extent of global warming."

JEANINE PIRRO:
ISIS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi was "released by Obama in 2009."
(Pentagon says it was by Bush administration in 2004)

PETE HEGSETH:
Redskins is "used historically" as "a term of respect."

TODD STARNES:
Liberals have figured out a Facebook algorithm and "all the people getting banned from Facebook are somehow conservatives."

DICK MORRIS:
A North Carolina study proves that "probably over a million people voted twice in (the 2012) election."

ANN COULTER:
"There is a growing body of evidence that radiation in excess of what the government says are the minimum amounts you should be exposed to are actually good for you and reduce cases of cancer."

GLENN BECK:
John Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, "has proposed forcing abortions and putting sterilants in the drinking water to control population."

No he had every right to say what he did but then the response he got was what he deserved and apologies were issued because he had lied.

Freedom of speech does not give protection in cases of false statements.

They only apologised because they were caught out. An intelligent unbiased host would have instantly called him out on that BS, but its a Fox News host so they didn't./

If it were a one-off, I would agree with you. However, Foxlies keeps wheeling out these "pundits" who have who have propensity to spew out misinformation.

Seems to be a Foxlies tactic.

Yes. Also relevant is that the person who owns and runs Foxnews also owns 70% of Australian newspapers and 100% of Australian cable tv news networks. If you have cable, half of the news networks available on it are owned by him.

Oh, and his favourite employee has the only political show on commercial free-to-air networks in Australia.

As for owning 70% of Australia's newspapers...a far more destructive influence on our democracy.
