Title: Australian of the Year.
Post by Aussie on Jan 25th, 2015 at 7:05pm
I dunno who won.  Don't care.  Every year, we search the cupboards for some crumb.  Every year, some token crumb gets the worthless title.  Why do we bother with this?

Woman campaigner on 'domestic violence - thus ensuring that the focus will be on the traditional 'man v woman' violence - as if that is the entire issue - to the detriment of men, children and society as a whole, and to the utter detriment of the Rule of Law.

Expect 'preventative violence' against men on whim to increase, thus tipping the pendulum further and further out of kilter and actually creating more trouble than it prevents, until the whole things becomes what it is in reality - just a free-for-all for anyone to inflict violence on anyone else, then complain when they get back more than they give.

What else would you expect?

This country has had its balls removed from it, and violence against men is totally acceptable as long as it is by the State and by often insane women with issues.

I knew it would be a Sheila, just as I knew it'd be an abo last year, but it's hard to begrudge it to her, or expect her not to go on a crusade.  Her son did get his head smashed in by his dad after all, but it's how that incident is exploited by higher powers that's the worry.

Looks like we have the first two nominations for dickheads of the year. :)

What about the dads who had their eight kids knifed by 'mum' in Queenslund (you mark my words - we do things differnently up here!  and much bigger by half!).

Surely their standing up against domestic violence merits an award.....

Poor woman. She lost a son only because of a revolting, reactive legal system.

Now another part of said system is trying to make it up to her by giving her an award.

Good point - but I hardly think we need to descend any further into the 'Minority Report' scenarios to prevent possible crimes.... i.e. exercising violence to prevent violence - there's enough of that going around already.

I know, Lisa - this entire issue as it now stands is filled with pain for too many - and pain handed out creates violence.  And I agree that a token in no way substitutes for the losses involved - for all involved.

I recall - if I do correctly - that the old man was a crazy... same as Monis .. we do not need to hang, draw and quarter all men on suggestion for that...

You'd have to be crazy to kill your own children, and unfortunately the majority - by seven times - are killed by the mother in company with the 'new lion' she takes on.  That is fact, and should be fully addressed in the current review in Victoria - not that I expect it will be.

All I can say about the representations so far is that if 'dv' is the greatest cause of disability in women - there must be a very tiny number of women disabled in society.... and blaming a man for a woman's inbuilt history and inherited issues is not on...

Thanks for the 'x 2.'  But it's like when Abbott gave Cosgrove and his predecessor the Sir/Dame titles.  It's just dumb.  Every year, after every year, after every year after every year, some Committee (paid for by us) goes around the Country begging that people nominate or be nominated for the next year's gongee.  Are those who missed out last Year (the Year before, the Year before etc.) no longer worthy through sheer happenstance of time?  It is just dumb.

If these people have done great work, then reward them when they do it with something far more worthwhile than some useless title which diminishes in value as every year passes.

Is there another Country which looks through the year's scraps to find the more worthy?  And how the hell does some person get found to be more worthy than another in this context.  If you become as cynical as I seem now to be, you'd almost call this obscene.

Tuna tossing title back in local hands

Jan 25, 2015

A husband and wife team from Port Lincoln in South Australia have won the coveted tuna toss finals at the annual Tunarama Festival.

Matt Staunton and wife Shanell took out the 2015 event, returning the title to Australia after a Japanese visitor won the toss last year.

Mr Staunton threw his tuna 24 metres to win the men’s title while Ms Staunton won the woman’s title with an 11m toss.

But this was not the first win for Mr Staunton who has taken out the title on a number of occasions.

“I’m happy to have won it again this year,” he said.

“[I'm] more happy that my wife managed to surprise the crowd and have a win as well.”

Ms Staunton said she was surprised and proud to have taken out the title.

The Tunarama Festival is an annual event held in Port Lincoln over the Australia Day long weekend.

It has been running since 1962 and celebrates the town’s tuna fishing industry.

The tuna toss is one of the main highlights of the weekend with heats taking place on the Saturday and finals completed on the Sunday.

An 8 kilogram tuna from the southern ocean was used in this year’s toss.

A total of 10 men and 10 women battled it out in the final.

Competitors travelled from as far as Canada, Paris, Prague, Japan and Solomon Islands for a chance to take out the title

I hardly thought this woman deserved Australian of the Year.

It hasn't been 12 months since her sons death at his fathers hands.

So she hasn't been campaigning very long.

I'm sure there are others out there who have been campaigning against domestic violence for many many years .....

yet they go unheralded/unrecognised.

To me this is just a stunt & cheapens the whole concept of this award.

I don't believe any Sports person should win it either ... there are enough awards in that sphere for them ..

& Adam Goodes got his on the back of some teenager calling him a gorilla which he applied the race card to ...

If this is the criteria for selection they should scrap it.

I've been campaigning against domestic violence for many years - trouble is I lay out the real issues and seek to cut down on the violence involved in handling the issue - not just push come politically correct barrow.

Sorry about her son, but a single exceptional incident and a mother's response is hardly cause for Oz of the Year.

Are these, so called, "dwarfs" dead ?

Dwarf throwing is STILL legal - so long as the device has been euthanized in a humane manner before the event

The same guideline applies to tuna tossing

I do know the "choking the turkey" and "spanking the monkey" events have been banned at public gatherings
- though not by the RSPCA - but by Fred Niles' "The Festival of Light Nannies"

Tuna tossing is very disrespectful to a magnificent creature of the deep, they should use a replica in these more enlightened times.

Picking one Australian above so many is just plain idiotic, getting an award because your mental patient of a husband killed your kid is gross too, she should have refused it.

There would have been many other worthy recipients but they also have to tick the "celebrity" box as well before they can be considered, you have to be able to sell copies of New Idea too don't forget.  :(

I dont think there is a criteria people just nominate someone and a committee decides who will win

you can nominate yourself if you want.

I am sure there are reasons behind receiving the award but not for being nominated...

there are trillians of people that deserve these thing..

but in that case we would all have one..

I think its more symbolic....this lady stand out as a victim of D.Violence...her son was killed in revenge...

pay back to her....not many of us can comprehend someone doing something that evil.. but it happens more than we like to admit..the lady reminds us of what courage is... she could have laid down and given up...

.however..think what you will. :(

There would have been many other worthy recipients but they also have to tick the "celebrity" box as well before they can be considered, you have to be able to sell copies of New Idea too don't forget.  :(

thats pretty low by any standards....

this women lost her only son... b ecause she had the guts to finally leave... did avos stop him killing her most beautiful child???...........

amazing how you think a fish is more worthy of respect than this women.. >:(

No, cods - but they may well have been the trigger that pushed him over the edge......  the imposition of violence, in this case in the form of sanction from a court on zero evidence, to cut back on violence is the same as shagging to cut back on promiscuity.

Study revolution and see one clarion call.......... the most important motivator to revolution/insurrection is... insult.  Insult a man by taking away his family and even his right to a fair discussion, and replace that with the violence of the state on a zero evidence basis - and you create a grievous insult.

This is overlooked in every review of domestic violence, and yet is in place in every jurisdiction in this and any other countries blighted by the current paradigm of 'domestic violence'.

There are many other issues not looked at in this issue - but this one is relevant here.

Rosie on TV right now - she discusses 'family violence' - all power to her, though the journo keeps trying to get her to discuss violence against women, she continues her neutral position.

Many others could take that neutral approach instead of jihad..... as inevitably will be the result of the issue again being hijacked by self-interest groups.

I hope she is a good ambassador for getting at the actual issues involved in violence.

she knew her husband had mental issues......as I would think quite a few men who resort to killing have... and she has said there is not enough notice taken of this HUGE problem...

and even you must admit this is on the increase......or at the least it isnt going away...we do know there is domestic violence on both sides..

and I am not sure this lady is only talking about female victims...

all I know is there is almost always CHILDREN victims.....

there is always always a VICTIM..... I dont know what the answer is...but as she said today.. shes over the BANDAID fixes..

AVos DVOS.. are pieces of paper mean nothing to anyone with mental issues...

if a bloke says you are not getting away from me.. he usually means it...

how many DVOs are issued to women????>..wives or ex wives?..

how many men run away from their partner with a few kids in tow???>...

the balance is very much the other way..

and in this day and age.. in a country like this . its a real shocker..

She was very conscientious to keep the discussion neutral... can;t say the same for the journo who buys into the current total 'man v woman' monologue.

Yes - her hubby was a nutter - and somehow slipped through the ropes....

You simply cannot predict that someone, even a nutter, is going to do what he did, so in all seriousness, it was near impossible for anyone to move to prevent it happening.   As I said before about Monis - we don't crucify all Muslim men for the sins of one..... if we did we've lost ourselves as a society and we might as well throw the rule book out the window.

so we shouldn't be launcvhing jihad agaisnt men over this or the other incidengts.

I cannot say if it is on the increase - the waters have been muddied for so long by 'feminists' enlarging the meaning of 'violence' - one way only - that nobody has the truth now at all.  Any complaint, no matter how unfounded, is regarded as an act of violence.

That's why we USED to have courts.. now we have Star Chambers.  The very actions of these Star Chambers masquerading as courts is actually ramping up the violence by injecting more violence into the equation.

Never going to solve anything.

“The use of force is a last resort. One aspect of violence is that it is unpredictable. Although your initial intention may be to use limited force, once you have engaged in violence the consequences are unpredictable. Violence always brings about unexpected results and almost always provokes retaliation.”

- Dalai Lama

Do you see how the violence of a court actually makes the situation worse?

There have to be better ways.

Sorry, ian - I've already said everything you just said - this is another component of the entire gamut of the discussion on violence.  That discussion is far more extensive than a simple discussion of the relatively few extreme incidents, which by no means cover the entire issues in any way - yet at this time are something of a flechette round aimed at an entire 50% of the population, if the to-date biased media input is to be believed with regard to the Victorian farce.

The fact that the man WAZS mentally ill only means that my point about the trigger effect of an insult (real or perceived) MAY have had a greater effect than on a normal person.

This woman was carefully neutral in her position - something the media was not - and thus has won many points with me.  Perhaps she has a better grip on the issues than the ideologues who muddy the waters have.

Right now I'm considering making a submission to the Victorian review thing.. just don't have the time at the moment.

these are actions that can all be avoided...there is so much out there now for people to get guidance..something they seem to have missed out on whilst growing up...

yet to no avail.. its getting worse women are still hiding in refuges?????.....some really living in fear of being killed by someone who seems to have lost all reason...

women have killed their partner after being abused for years and finally saying enough is enough...

why does it come down to this??>..what are we doing wrong in the make up of these people who think they have some right to bash and torment another human being???.......

we dont have a good record in this country.....killing children as pay back...it will never make sense to me...

I do not understand the question..

if a women was MURDERED by the husband when found in bed with another man..

IT IS MURDER...

as far as I know..

domestic violence does not automatically mean DEATH...

however if you take a life... its usually is MURDER..

was it provoked??>.. thats up to the lawyers.....

is sex a reason to MURDER NOW?.. I dont know the law changes all the time...

not too many women MURDER their man because he is unfaithful....imagine how many would be in prison if that were the case? ::) ::)they do chop off things now though.. ;)

when a women lives in fear day in day out..she is usually exhausted...when her kids come into the firing line.. she gets pushed over the edge sometimes..

is Domestic violence provocation for murder??..

not in every case..

Firstly - I apologise for my naivety in expecting the media to do other than jump on a band wagon.

I believe my credentials in regard to FAMILY violence are impeccable.... coming from a family of lunatics and drunks, and with any number of incidents of violence against me.

I know full well what is involved - and therefore why it should not be allowed to get out of hand and turned into a jihad against an entire social group in our society - to which I happen to belong.

I will not accept being abused and assaulted by family and past women in my life, and then being equally assaulted by the State in order to placate a few ideological harpies bent on reducing men under despotism for their own purposes.

The issues of Family violence are more complex that the long out-worn 'man v woman' monologue forced on us by ideologues and a sycophantic government and media.

That is why I applaud this woman for standing firm under pressure from media and restricting the issue to FAMILY violence.

"Almost 24% of all relationships had some violence, and half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases."

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1854883/

News tonight - woman charged with manslaughter and her 'new lion' husband with murder over the death of a 6-7 week old infant.

Jesus God..... is it at all possible to address the issues in their entirety?

http://www.aic.gov.au/documents/6/6/0/%7B66025eb4-dc26-4b37-803b-bcc1ea184951%7Dti53.pdf

On page two you will note the following neat sidestep:-

"However, according to police
data, we do know that between July
1989 and December 1993, there were
108 child homicide incidents, resulting
in the deaths of 126 children under
the age of 15 years. This figure
represents around 8.5 per cent of all
homicides in Australia in that time period.
Twenty-five of these incidents (20 per
cent) involved more than one victim
(compared with 5 per cent of
all homicides which involved multiple
victims in Australia). In almost all of
these 25 cases, the offender was the
child's father."

108 total deaths - 25 case where the perpetrator was the child's father - that leaves 83 by 'other persons', and mother in not mentioned.  A bit sneaky, considering one such mother killed eight in one go.... and there are mothers in prison (rightly or wrongly, as in Follbigg) for killing four of their own children etc...

http://www.loveourchildrenusa.org/stats.php

Perpetrators

A perpetrator of child abuse and/or neglect is a person who has abused or maltreated a child while in a caretaking relationship to that child.
•      Three-fifths (61.8%) of perpetrators were female. Female perpetrators were typically younger than their male counterparts -41.5 percent were younger than 30 years of age, compared to 31.2 percent of male perpetrators.
•      Almost nine-tenths (87.3%) of all victims were maltreated by at least one parent. The most common pattern of maltreatment was a child victimized by a female parent  acting alone (44.7%).
•      Female parents were identified as the perpetrators of neglect and physical abuse for the highest percentage of child victims. In contrast, male parents were identified as the perpetrators of sexual abuse for the highest percentage of victims.

No - sorry - the entire range of issues MUST be thoroughly scrutinised for once and not ambushed by ideologues and media bent on a single false view.

No ian - it is NOT reprehensible - it is perhaps one of very few honest endeavourss to actually get at the truth about the RARE extreme incidents of FAMILY violence.   What IS reprehensible is the way this entire issues has been skewed into a near total 'man on woman' thing, when the facts speak otherwise, AND the blithe use of sanctions by the 'law' operating on the basis of 'guilt by accusation'.

Such an event, the 'guilt by accusation' is a profound insult, not only to any reasonable person, but to the law itself as you well know, and I can only conjecture what it may do to an unstable person.

To finish - until we address - as I've posted with ample support already - the entire gamut of FAMILY violence, and remove ourselves from the utter myth of 'man evil - woman angel', these issues will never even begin to approach resolution.

In fact, they will only continue to get worse.

Right now I'm considering making a submission to the Victorian review thing.. just don't have the time at the moment.

you are trying to make the case that the is man was pushed into this action by his treatment in the family courts. To me that is quite a reprehensible claim, clearly the only trigger for his aasault on his own child was his mental illness.

SO WE DONT HOLD ADULTS RESPONSIBLE IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING?

I think everyone knows how far D.V goes seeing the little Batty boy paid the ultimate price for it..

to me its STARTS and usually ENDS WITH ADULTS..

where are you going with the blame or responsibility..for it...?????

Isn't laying down and giving up exactly what you have been saying we should do when someone threatens death to you or your family? :-?
Now it's courage not to?

why not eh? Already a gang here constantly bullying Cods on this issue, you might as well join in.

Simply addressing the issues in total, cods... no wonder you are lost and confused... but I suppose that is picking on you.

Your response is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

We will most emphatically NOT have the Rule of Law abrogated by installing Guilt By Accusation and extreme sanction of the forces of law via some mythical 'Minority Report' approach.....not in my country.  You claim that 'violence orders' do not work - I suggest that in some cases they are the trigger for retaliation against a perceived abuse via 'guilt by accusation' and illegal sanction of a court, i.e violence writ large - and you and the other blind followers accuse me of attacking you.  It is YOU who are advocating extreme and illegal violence against the individual in MY country on the basis of preferential treatment of the accuser, and on the basis of accusation alone.

The solution is a full and proper review of all the issues involved in violence and how it works for real, and not just in some tame way that any Socio-Fascist ideologue wishes it to.

I compare, quite correctly, the approach of Yond Feminist to 'violence' in the same vein as the NAZI concept that the very existence of  Jew (etc) was a crime against Germany....

Doesn't work when you start labeling entire social groups for the purpose of resolving a minority crime.

Now - could any of you address the issues I've raised in any meaningful way... or do you prefer to reduce the discussion to personal issues... again?

"pay back to her.."??

The state should 'pay back to her' for the death of her son caused by her husband's insanity?

Your blind adherence to the ideology that every woman is somehow 'owed' for every aspect of life is not appealing.  If we were to adopt your yardstick for all equally, as The Law mandates, we would be paying everyone for every slight or injury incurred in life.

you are comparing apples with oranges....why dont you debate the topic...which is the fact that a VICTIM of DOmestic Violence has been made AUstralian of the YEAR..

just goes to show what this country has sunk to????..

now when we get people that instead of trying to solve what SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING IN THIS COUNTRY that is so full of wealth....

we turn it into a comparison with terrorists......

I dont get that??? sorry if I do not see why someone cannot see the difference..

you need to take a real good look at what you are saying...

I don't care who became Australian of the year, nothing to debate.

I'm using your logic cods and even used exactly this argument in the other thread. It's not apples and oranges. If you should roll over, shut up and do what you're told when some crazy threatens your life, and that is what you said, then this kind of thing is exactly the same.

You need to take a real good look at your logic.

Dear cods,

How does adhering to the current popular myth that men are evil and women are angels ensure that women accept full responsibility for their own actions?

Under the current paradigm of men v women without any women v men violence and men v children without any women v children - women are absolved automatically from any and all responsibility, even when the facts speak otherwise.

The Australian of the Year herself made it clear she was concerned over the issues of FAMILY violence, and despite pressure from the media, would not be drawn into discussion of the current men v women ONLY paradigm, which is the province of ideologues and not of fact.

All power to her and some could learn from her.

I just googled a list of them. Looking at the last 10 years, I would scrub 5 of them straight off. A few of them I don't know at all, so reserve judgement, but this year's person Is probably a worthy case. I can't really judge on that though because I don't know how much and over what period she has done good works.

For about a year she's been working on Family violence.... big issue as you can see from the discussion and she sounds like she is not attached to any ideology over it.

Seriously don't see how that constitutes Australian of The Year though... more like a swing into the current review in Victoria.... I do hope she retains that perspective on the real issues, many of which are unmentioned in mainstream media and desperately need to be addressed.

Family Violence is the far better term since 'domestic violence' has become shorthand for the myth of countless men out there bashing up countless women, when the facts do not support that stance in any way.

Easy to become emotive and listen to the 'coalface workers' who only ever view the extreme cases or the ones that get by on guilt by accusation etc as a matter of course, and therefore assume that any complaint, no matter how unfounded, should lead to dire punishment and judicial assault on the accused without reference to fact.
