The Law Council of Australia has also expressed concern about the increase in fees, describing the family law fee changes as "particularly cynical".

I love it...

the law council wouldnt be one of the highest chargers or ripper off'ers in the would would they....

of course...not anyone ever heard of a POOR legal??..

divorce is far too easy today same as bankruptcy...

no one faces responsibility.... we all know that divorce nor the family court SOLVE  ANYTHING>.. because the main people are allowed to blame ev eryone else bar themselves..... the cheaper something is... the more its abused.

Divorce is a sin in Abbott's book.

The devil must be paid.

Way back in The Day, when the Family Law Act was born in 1975......there were no fees payable.

It was all charged to the taxpayer then?

No wonder the lawyers are against higher fees.  Not as easy as fleecing the tax payer.

Should have made that clearer.  There were no filing fees.  Rock up to the Registry counter, hand over whatever application it was, and it was accepted.

Now, rock up to the Registry counter, hand over whatever application it is, AND hand over a week's wages (for some) in filing fees, and it will be accepted.

It seems, almost.

"The point I make in the book is that a society that is moving towards some kind of recognition of gay unions, for instance, is surely capable of providing additional recognition to what might be thought of as traditional marriage," Mr Abbott told Fairfax newspapers.

"Something akin to a Matrimonial Causes Act marriage ought to be an option for people who would like it.

"Even though [marriage] is probably the most important commitment that any human being can make, in fact there are many, many contracts which are harder to enter and harder to get out of than this one."

I find it hard to believe anyone could support charges such as these being imposed upon people who are already suffering emotional distress. Adding financial distress, which it most certainly would for many, is an absolutely heartless and cynical move from the Libs. One has to question if the extremist Catholic faction that is so powerful in the current cabinet, led by the likes of Abbott, Robb and Abetz, see this as a perverse way to "support" marriage? God only knows, because extremist catholic thinking certainly moves in mysterious ways.

It is a most disconcerting trend in the coalition to see the way that catholic church beliefs seem to be reflected in party policy, where senior ministers consult with church advisors for direction on how they should steer public policy. This is a self admitted practice from the PM and his catholic cronies, and it needs tostop.
Can you imagine the outcry if the PM was muslim, and he was consulting his Imam before making policy decisions?  The public would be screaming bloody murder, and rightfully so, and I think we should be just as outraged that we have this catholic religious organisation exerting undue and unwarranted influence to keep our leaders from respecting the wishes of the electorate because the church does not agree with the public's moral choices. If we wanted to live in a theocracy, we could move to Iran.

So it's about time that coalition supporters started to let their party know that we want a secular government in our country.
