The first word is Albury (WA) ...

The second word is probably Depot...

But the third word has me foxed ... looks like 'Salt'.

This is where the ANZACS sailed from WA to Europe.

This was 1916.

A full 6 months after my cousin was killed at Passchendaele they were still sorting out his Will in which he nominated his mother. So many were killed that it was a case of there being a huge backlog to get through for the desk jockeys.

There is no Albury in WA.  It'd be Albany.

Albany used to be the capital I think... many were sent from there! My uncle was sent from there: he survived but got gassed and lived a shite life until his 70s! All volunteers in the first world war I think!

Volunteers - yes. They had less idea about being in a combat situation than even commonsense should have told them. It's was all a case of 'Boys' Own Adventure' as far as they were concerned.

Technically it was 'voluntary', but of course no young man wanted to receive a white feather of cowardice in his mail box. And at that time a large number of English migrants were out of work in NSW which saw them joining up just to be 'normalised' if nothing else.

I think it was 1914.

And, it's Albany.

Pronounced Albany, not Albany.

Mr Mitty is being deliberately selective to ensure we see a small section of the document.  How else can you encourage ongoing interest and useless speculation?  Maybe, he'll stop being precious and show us the whole?

Correct. The very first lot of ANZACS left Albany WA for Egypt before the landing at Gallipoli (have I got that right?)

The ones who survived Gallipoli were then sent to France and ended up in the quagmire of Passchendaele in Belgium.

Good on you Heartless for knowing all this stuff about your dad and all the battle-place details. That's as it should be. No doubt you've compiled an album in commemoration of your dad.

I'm doing this at the moment with this newly-discovered '1st cousin 3 times removed' of mine. It's a grim task with no silver-lining to it. What the Germans did in terms of misery and death during two World Wars that they initiated last century is mind-boggling. They should be grateful that at the end of WWII the allies didn't carpet-bomb the entire country with H-bombs to ensure they never rose up again.

Instead they got Chocolates-and-Chesterfield cigarettes drops from the Americans.
