Title: Which National Anthem did you sing at school?
Post by Lisa Jones on Sep 10th, 2015 at 8:31am
That "God Save The Queen" topic has me wondering.

Ok....I'll go first.

I started school in the mid to late 70's.

The ONLY Anthem we stood up to sing in assembly was "Advance Australia Fair".

We also sang "Waltzing Matilda", "Kookaburra Lives In The Old Gum Tree"...ya know those sorts of songs.

What about you guys?

When I started school, it was God Save The Queen.

When Herbie started school, it was God Save The King.

When we become a Republic, it will be changed to Khe Sanh (or Working Class Man).

Lisa, If you haven't done so, read all of the words of "Advance Australia Fair"...it's pretty grisly.

It's true - God Save The King was the national when Herbie started school.

I started school in the late '60s - Lizzie had been our Queen for at least a decade by then.

you always go on about someone being old as if its a disease..

you do know its a privilege to get old dont you?

with it usually comes wisdom.and history..

and if you are one of the chosen ones.. I cant see how you can avoid it...  ::)

getting old I mean...

perhaps a little more respect would go far... as I am sure you will want respect if you reach a good OLD age.

I would have been happy keeping GSTQ until Lizzie dies.

She is, after all, the Queen of Australia and we still are a Constitutional Monarchy.

When she's gone though, and we become a Republic, we should get rid of AAF and change the anthem to Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (by The Angels).

Keep the lyrics but change the tune to working class man.

Raven was born the same year Advance Australia Fair was made our official anthem so it's the only anthem he sung at school.

Actually, I'm glad that we have AAF. I remember being a happy little vegemite singing God Save the King, then Georgie carked it, Lizzie got the gig and we had to learn a whole new song. Wouldn't want to go through that again. Talk about your PTSD...

I can imagine it being sung at school assemblies all across the country.

The older kids will sing the chorus: "Am I ever gonna see your face again?"

And the little ones down the front will belt out the reply: "No Way, Get F*cked, F*ck off!"

I've always considered this one of the most stirring national anthem ever. No, I don't know the words and I don't care for it politically. I'm just saying that I find it the most moving of national anthems.  Always brings a tear to my eye

One of the great joys of watching the soccer world cup is the anthems
Some of them are a hoot. Like Argentina & Italy I think it is. Just when you think they're finished, off they go again.
I'm sure even some of the players aren't sure.
And some are so long you need a packed lunch to get through.

Some National Anthems are very well thought out pieces of music with timeless lyrics, but sadly I don't think ours is one of them.  The Russian Anthem is a favourite of mine too.  have a listen to the Red Army Choir sing it and observe how real men sing  :o

Apart from our melody being somewhat uninspired, I have always found there is a great disconnect between the lyrics and the music of Advance Australia fair.  You should not need a lexicon in order to sing your own anthem!

Other favourites of mine include the Kiwi anthem (very memorable and catchy melody, and the Maori verse is a nice touch)
The German one is very good too (was composed by renowned classical composer Joseph Haydn)
The Star-Spangled Banner is another great one, and while the melody is nothing great, the words are really passionate and inspiring

Google knows:

La Marcha Real
(English Translation first)
Long live Spain!
We sing together,
with different voices,
and only one heart.
Long live Spain!
From the green valleys,
to the immense sea,
a hymn of brotherhood.
Love the Fatherland,
which knows how to embrace,
below the blue sky,
people in freedom.
Glory to the sons,
who have given to history,
justice and greatness,
democracy and peace.

¡Viva España!
Cantemos todos juntos
con distinta voz
y un solo corazón.
¡Viva España!
Desde los verdes valles
al inmenso mar,
un himno de hermandad.
Ama a la Patria
pues sabe abrazar,
bajo su cielo azul,
pueblos en libertad.
Gloria a los hijos
que a la Historia dan
justicia y grandeza
democracia y paz.

(That's a crap translation)

Well, they stole it from the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, who had been dead for 40 years by that time, and couldn't protest. He originally wrote it for the Austrian Emperor Francis II.

The original words started God Save Franz the Kaiser. (Gott Erhalte Franz der Kaiser)

OMA.......you did have your twins when you were ten years old.

No wonder you started a topic on domestic violence.

"Advance Australia Fair" is the national anthem of Australia. Created by the Scottish-born composer Peter Dodds McCormick, the song was first performed in 1878, and was sung in Australia as a patriotic song. It replaced "God Save the Queen". It did not gain its status as the official anthem until 1984, following a plebiscite to choose the national song in 1977.

"Advance Australia Fair", with modified lyrics from the original (see development of lyrics), was adopted as the Australian national anthem on 19 April 1984 by a proclamation by the Governor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen,[9] on a recommendation by the Labor government of Bob Hawke

I started school in the mid to late 70's.[/highlight]

The ONLY Anthem we stood up to sing in assembly was "Advance Australia Fair".

We also sang "Waltzing Matilda", "Kookaburra Lives In The Old Gum Tree"...ya know those sorts of songs.

Thank you!

So in 1977, a plebiscite took place to CHOOSE the song "Advance Australia Fair" as our National Anthem.

I was still in infants school...hence why I can only remember my teacher (bloody hell her name was Ms Jones too lol) going through Advance Australia Fair with us every single morning. We had to stand up straight like soldiers in full school uniform and she insisted that we sing loudly and in tune or else we'd keep singing.

Crikey she was one angry woman.

Oooh just remembered something else about her too. She once had the nerve to hit the back of my leg. I was this very skinny thing back then and the entire back of my leg went red and stung thanks to her gross 1970's jewellery. I burst into tears but that made things worse. She began yelling at me. I became a withdrawn, quiet child after that.

Anyway...the reason for me being hit?

I forgot to bring my coloured pencils to school for drawing. I didn't have the guts to tell her that my  European parents wouldn't give me coloured pencils because for them school = Maths + English + Science. That's it.

Anyway....think I better change my nic after this post. :'(

It’s actually a bit more complex than that.

In February 1974 there was a public opinion poll to determine the relative popularity of the three songs: Advance Australia Fair, Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia. 51.4% of the 60,000 people surveyed opted for Advance Australia Fair.  Gough Whitlam subsequently announced to Parliament on 8 April 1974 that Advance Australia Fair had been chosen by the people as the new national anthem (with God Save the Queen to be retained for all regal occasions).

In 1976 Malcolm Fraser announced that for civilian events, any of the four songs could be used.

In May 1977, the Australian Electoral Office held a national poll in conjunction with a constitutional referendum. Advance Australia Fair was the preferred song.  Despite this result, seven years elapsed before Advance Australia Fair was proclaimed as the national anthem.

Which explains why that was the song we sang at assembly in the late 70's.

Thanks  :)
