Title: Abbott - You made a Huge mistake dumping him..
Post by The Mechanic on Sep 28th, 2015 at 7:16am

Quote:
The mistake wasn’t that you voted for him.

In fact, you got one of the finest human beings to be Prime Minister

In many ways he seemed too moral for the job, yet he achieved more in two years than the last two Labor prime ministers achieved in six.

Compare. Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard left us with record deficits after blowing billions on trash — on overpriced school halls, “free” insulation that killed people, green schemes that collapsed, “stimulus” checks to the dead.

They meanwhile opened our borders to 50,000 illegal immigrants and drowned 1200. They hyped the global warming scare and forced us to pay a job-killing carbon tax just to pretend they were saving us.

But Abbott? I won’t go through the whole list: how he stopped the boats, curbed spending, scrapped the useless carbon and mining taxes, led the world’s defiance of deadly Russian strongman Vladimir Putin and made us safer from terrorism.

He even signed three free trade deals to secure jobs for our kids — including one with China that the last three governments couldn’t clinch.

And he did all this in the face of astonishing heckling and even vilification from our media class, and despite often feral opposition in the Senate.

But your mistake was not to care about all that. Deeds didn’t count with you. Image was all.

And so you told the pollsters you didn’t like Abbott. You believed the vicious crap written about him, until his MPs finally panicked and dumped him.

Your mistake was that you couldn’t look behind the flim flam — the way Abbott looked, the way he spoke, the way he walked, the way he ate an onion — to see what he’d actually done for you and for your country

You even laughed at some of his finest qualities and emblems of his public service. Journalists ridiculed his work as a lifesaver by mocking his costume and body hair. They dismissed his firefighting service as just a photo-op. Wrote off his patriotism as bigotry.

When he defended women, he was called insincere. When he warned that our finances were in strife or that terrorism menaced us, they called him a scaremonger.

And you believed them. You let people treat like absolute dirt a man who had a record of volunteerism no prime minister has equalled — working in Aboriginal communities, lifesaving, firefighting, helping people in natural disasters, and raising money for women’s shelters and a hospice for dying children.

And none of it was done just to puff his CV for an election pamphlet.

The only reason I know Abbott helped people secure their homes after one Sydney storm is that my wife’s uncle asked the head of the team getting the tree off his house if that really was Abbott over there, helping to cut it away.

Shush, said the captain. He doesn’t like people knowing.

Now, I must declare straight up — I call Tony Abbott a friend.

So you’ll call me biased. You’ll laugh that I can write this massive praise of him when almost everyone else is horse-laughing. And you’ll say that’s why I see more qualities in Abbott than are actually there.

But you’ll just be making another mistake.

See, I don’t think Abbott is a great man because he’s my friend. He’s my friend because he’s a great man. Greater than the people who tore him down.

He’s my friend especially because he’s not those things that so many journalists wrote — including some who must have known what they wrote were lies.

Truth is that Abbott is not a thug, bully, racist, fool, liar, woman-hater, homophobe or bigot. He’s not cruel or lacking compassion.

If he were any of those things he would not be my friend. Those are deal breakers for me. Those I love best are people of honour, warmth and kindness.

Tony Abbott is one such man, and that he has been betrayed and deposed doesn’t just break my heart. It makes me fear for this country. I can only hope that Australians will one day wake up to what they’ve tossed away.

Sorry to sound so melodramatic, but here are some glimpses of the man I know — ones that put the lie to the trash that even big-name correspondents peddled about him.

A woman hater? Ask his daughters or female chief of staff. Ask the many women on his staff, so loyal that he had one of the lowest turnovers of modern prime ministers.

A crash-through insensitive bully with no people skills? Ask my children how gentle he was when he called around. Ask one of my 2GB listeners, Pat, who rang in to say how moved he was that Abbott, on the way to a crucial Question Time on the day the carbon tax was repealed, still had the time to ring Pat’s dying brother.

Or consider this: just minutes after Malcolm Turnbull told Abbott he was challenging for his job, Abbott still honoured a promise to meet girl guides, rather than hit the phones to save himself.

Too loyal? Well, true, yet when I once asked why he wouldn’t buy off his critics by sacking Joe Hockey as Treasurer, Abbott told me he knew Hockey actually had the talent to be great, and would be if given another chance.

A homophobe? Abbott actually had a deep friendship with one of my friends, too, the out-and-proud gay commentator Christopher Pearson, and even helped carry the coffin of this much-missed man.

Quote:
In fact, when one Fairfax writer this year accused Abbott — on entirely fictitious evidence — of having had a “possibly homophobic” moment, a gay adviser on Abbott’s staff texted me in rage: “If PM was so homophobic he wouldn’t be sharing the C1 car with me.”

Every Prime Minister thinks they don’t get the press they deserve. But I bet Abbott’s friends would agree that none could have been so different in the flesh from what you read in the papers — and so much better. Shame on the journalists responsible for this great slander.

Yes, I know Abbott made mistakes, and I was hard on the worst. I know he was too stubborn. And I know he was clumsy in selling himself.

I admit I even quarrelled with him privately when he too-nobly refused to whack Labor leader Bill Shorten over some detail of national security.

No, the country before politics, he declared. I could have shaken the silly bugger, who played politics like it was cricket when everyone else was cage fighting.

God, he wouldn’t even do the populist thing and just promise to build our next submarines in Adelaide, and to hell with the cost or national interest.

But that was Abbott, and for me character always counts in the end.

That’s why I say: this country has despised and rejected a great servant. It is a time of sorrow.

That's why the media needs to be cleaned up. The Australian media is a political party as it is now-this must stop.

Turnbull must be removed by the grass roots voters at the next election. I could never vote for the left but the treacherous scum turnbull has to go.

The Mechanic has been sniffing petrol again.

Where did you find that rubbish Mechanic, Murdoch press I imagine.

He was a useless pr1ck that got what he deserved.

He was an embarrassment every time he opened his mouth.

Andrew Bolt, I should have guessed, even the Mechanic is too embarrassed to acknowledge the writer in the Op or provide a link

Yes I think so too.

While we all have acknowledged that he was a dreadful PM IMO he was still the favourite to win the next election.

Changing Leaders at this time I feel has made them substantially more vulnerable. Particularly a nothing change like this one - one dumb bully with a replacement one man show who has both hands tied behind his back.

Most of the work was already done long before he came into govt. All he did was buckle on the few sticking points that remained and he signed them. He needed something to claim as his legacy, everything else was falling down around him.

yes have to admit I forgot Gorton..... and look how that turned out?.. but I am not looking at what happens in opposition...to me thats standard  its like the captain of the team... however the PM.. is a whole different ball game...

and even you would have to admit watching shortarse destroy labor was not a PRETTY SIGHT...

it is one you would like to forget and hope history will forget it as well...

but it wont..

I always said Howard should have stepped aside for Costello...it was the correct and ethical thing to do...

there is and never will be anything ETHICAL about what this motley crew have done...at least not in my book...

I know some folks love underhand...I am just not one of them

10 people voted against Tony

I have forgotten the score with Labor but Kevin changed the rules so just a certain few could never do that to a Labor PM again....

why did he do that?... do you think?.. ::) ::) ::)

seeing as how he was on  both ends of that sticky stick.!!!

I note Bolt did not give credit to Labor for the two of the biggest policy changes in the last decade, NDIS and Gonski. Saying sorry to the stolen generation (Bolt denies this ever happened) started the conversation on Aboriginal reconciliation. Abbott has done nothing for Aboriginal people worth any substance.

However the problem Bolt has is he glossed over Abbott's lies and backflips like they where irrelevant and had no bearing on his ultimate demise....Abbott has done nothing worthwhile for the nation and has put the nation in a far worse position than when he came to office...No one likes a liar and a fraud Mr Bolt and although you cannot see any failings in Abbott's bullshit the public are not as bigoted and stupid as you take them for....Abbott was a failure as a PM and deserves the criticism he levelled at everyone else!!!

Abbott was dumped by his own party not because of members on this forum or some bullshit about media bias....Abbott was criticised because he deserved it after his lies and backflips....If you want to put the blame where it belongs look no further than the Liberal Party of Australia mate...Its always someone else's fault with you lot!!!

he did stuff them up ... we have a FTA with japan, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world, that prohibits our spare parts (gearbox) manufacturers from selling their wares in Japan

we have a FTA with China that lets the Chinese bring in foreign workers with no regard for locals.

Re the FTAs I said that abbott made a huge mistake saying he wanted the FTAs signed by certain days, the other countries just had to sit there and do nothing and we would have to capitulate to get the damn things signed. That happened.

That alone made abbott a very bad PM.

He also cut funding to Domestic violence, cutting funding for refuges and for legal advice centres dealing just with DV. Given that, I find it incredible any female can say a good word for our immediate past PM!

Another crap thing he did, looking at ways to rain in his out of control spending, he would have included the tax exemptions for super which are growing out of control! But because Labor suggested a couple of savings he ruled them out straight away. That is not the action of even a slightly competent PM!

Tony had to go, but I was under no illusions that Turncoat was in any way shape or form progressive.

And a deal with China to let us send our workers and services to them.

Let's face it, labour mobility is crucial in a globalized market. This works for us. Any foreign sub manufacturers, for example, who make subs here are going to need to send their experts over.

Trade is increasingly in services, not goods. If you're trading services, people need to move around.

I'm giving Abbott a tick for his trade-agreements.

The politics of trade agreements are another matter. Ministers need to be able to make deals with their foreign counterparts. Putting everything before a partisan parliament doesn't work. Having an opposition shoot them down during the negotiation is not a good way to do business.

Companies are already able to send 'experts' over here. Especially is such specialised fields as Submarine building. The China FTA however will allow the Chinese to buy a farm (for example) and then import farmhands or abattoir workers to do the work, at the expense of locals.  An exchange of workers can only work if it goes both ways. Whilst on paper China may have agreed to allow some of our workers their, the reality is very few Aussies will go to work in China to earn $2 a day.

Companies are already able to send 'experts' over here. Especially is such specialised fields as Submarine building. The China FTA however will allow the Chinese to buy a farm (for example) and then import farmhands or abattoir workers to do the work, at the expense of locals.

I wonder if that's right. If it is, what we're facing is a massive flood of Chinese investment, ownership and cheap labour. This doesn't ring true to me. We already have 457 visas that do a similar thing.

I agree that foreign companies should be made to scout the local labour market first, before flying people in.

Sure ministers don't have carte blanche. But in foreign relations, you can't put every deal before a politicized body, such as a parliament.

The China free trade deal is different, of course. It's a big one. But the ALP are being a little too tricky for their own good here.

This deal should pass.

I love how Bolt blames the media. Bolt has been an active part of Abbott's Pravda. News Ltd owns 70% of print news in Australia.

That's the same News Ltd that impaled two previous prime ministers on the daily front pages of each of its capital city tabloids.

and it will. Labor has always said that it supports the deal. It just wants to make sure the Chinese can't bring in cheap foreign labor willy nilly. I'm not sure why the libs are fighting this so hard. It can only make them look bad if they fight for Chinese labour.

I personally don't see labor protecting Aussie jobs as a bad thing, Someone has to stand up for the Aussies.

labor actually did a pretty good ob under tough times if you ignore the bickering between rudd and gillard.... Abbotts crying about being hamstrung by the senate and he had a majority govt. Imagine if he had to deal with a hung parliament? he'd have spent 2 years hiding in his office twiddling his thumbs crying it's everyone else's fault.

Shorten is an unknown, we do know that every time he has stepped forward in a speech situation like the budget reply or other occasions he carved tony & Joe up.

I suspect that there could well be more substance there than a number of posters here think.

Tony was great at stringing 2 words together, he used a classic trick - always repeat the same word twice and it normally had one syllable or less. He did however have a significant issue with 3 words at the same time.

Gillard was a consummate communicator. Endearing, personable, and direct. She had all the answers and she didn't shy away from stating them. She had an excellent sense of humour.

There is no comparison between a politician like Gillard and one Tony Abbott. Abbott would not even go on Q&A. He rarely faced the public without at least 5 flags and minders fencing the questions. And when he answered them, he always put his foot in it.

As far as Q&A were concerned why would anyone other than a rusted on labor supporter or greeny want to go on that ridiculous show. Its a bunch of lefties in a room with recording gear and a bunch of their mates pretending to be an audience. Gosh what a waste of time that would be. What a waste of tax payers money is that ABC.

Rusted–on crap!

At least I give Howard credit for the gun buy-back and abbott credit for fixing the excise for small breweries so they don’t have to pay like the big brewers.

When I criticise I give real reasons: Howard for being a dessicated, mean spirited little turd who with Costello pissed $350Bn of boom time revenue up the wall.

I find it funny you take over 14 days to work out if someone is illiterate or not or what their background is. Heres a thought I read it DUH. That should take how many days again ?

Maybe you are illiterate and you don't even know. Now there's a thought, get back to us all in 14 days and let us all know troll.

What policies anyway? Ax the tax, stop the boats, try and make those with the least pay to get the Budget back in black. Idiotic, childish even. Nothing in the way of detailed, evidence based policy formulation, the more on was way too busy with stunts as LOTO.

Maybe not a mistake—it is nice not to have an inarticulate thug representing us—but maybe a waste of time?

It was never Tony Abbott that people hated it was the policies, getting rid of the front man and keeping the problem is rather self defeating.
