Just like most other measures, the oldest ice (4-5+ years old) has decreased again from the two recent rebound years. The part that melted out in the Beaufort/Chukchi/Central Arctic Basin will not be re-circulated through the Arctic, to end up even thicker and older in the sea ice's last refuge north of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, like it used to in the past. This is the main reason that the rebound is not showing signs of morphing into a recovery. If multi-year ice stays this low, there is no chance we will return to pre-2007 levels any time soon.
