Morrison & Corman.
With these two guys in charge of the govt finances we have nothing to worry about. And the investment banker looking over their shoulder to make sure they stay focussed on the real world and not the phoney world as described to them by the bureaucracy. Although I will say, it appears that Turnbull has made some wise choices in terms of his chief advisors, taking us back to the well-managed days of Hawke, Keating and Howard. By all accounts, he has struck the right balance in his office of good solid bureaucrats, political and media advisors. As I have already said, look forward to a solid 10 years of Turnbull. |

I have seen nothing yet to give me confidence Morrison will be any different to Hockey....When Morrison actually does something I might agree with you Bogey....Until then their was a reason this Government dumped Abbott and Hockey....Nothing has changed IMO!!!

Too early to ask for history. What I'm saying is, in Morrison we have a guy who is a proven achiever even if you don't agree with the policy. He gets done what he sets out to do. Whereas Hockey was a mistake from before the start. Corman is a very competent behind the scenes person. Together, the finances couldn't be in better hands. |

Got us through the GFC practically unscathed, one of a handful of advanced economies to do so. Unemployment reached over 10% in the US, 5.8% at its highest here. Implementation of the Carbon Price was smooth, making part of the compensation a tripling of the tax free threshold was genius according to Forbes business magazine. The two bank guarantees saved the banks, we had no runs, no bank failures, the loan of the commonwealth credit status—the 9As we got for the first time ever—made the govt $16Bn and helped the banks raise funds, rollover lines of credit etc at a time it was hard to find funds to borrow. Spent and taxed less as a % GDP than Howard/Costello and abbott/hokey. Did this by getting rid of the Baby Bonus and means testing the PHI rebate. That do to be going on with? Unlike Hokey Swan got all six of his Budgets through, including three as part of minority govt. |

Howard and Costello left a huge structural Budget deficit, using temporarary boom revenue to spend and give tax cuts. Came the GFC that structural deficit became a cash one. Not only that: $350Bn boom revenue WASTED! No new road or hospital or university to show for it! All WASTED on tax cuts and idiotic spending like the Baby Bonus. Not since Swan has there been a Treasurer to cut the built–in Howardista spending out the Budget! Just the super tax excemption cost the Budget $40Bn this year and climbing rapidly. Howard left a surplus, #1 Liberal fairy tale! |

And the structural Budget deficit is just the same story. Even if Howard had left more than negligible debt, as you can see from the abbott/hokey borrowing spree and profligate spending we could have raised the money anyway.

there is little doubt that John Howard was our last great prime minister.
Tragic that he was not the steady hand at the wheel during the GFC. If he had stayed in power we would have an ETS no manus island or assylum seeker debacle probably no deficit as John would have been able to sell a rise in the GST to the public. we would be infinitely better off. Instead the mayhem and havoc of those without the skills to lead. and no messiah on the horizon (though Scott may grow into the role) |

Howard/Costello a steady hand at the wheel? $1Trn net debt, at least one bank fallen over, unemployment over 10% etc. I worked that out once, applying what the various numpties have done before or said at the time. Maybe they could fan a speculative boom by feeding it huge amounts of tax money but could they manage a shock like the GFC? Doubt it, just look at Mr Trifecta himself, Treasurer to Fraser in the last years of the first oil shock. Clearly, it would have been a disaster to have Howard & Costello at the helm in 2008! Most of those voting for Howard were probably voting for the happy days before the GFC. Yet Howard’s actions as PM are the cause of much of our Budgetary and economic woes now: the profligate spending built into the Budget, super tax exemption costing $40Bn this year, $50Bn next and the high indebtedness and consequent lack of confidence of the household sector. A little clown is Howard. |

I am happy to reconstruct my reasoning in detail but you would run a mile like you did with MTM costings—about which I am more right than you.
I will leave you with the words of Malodorous when he was LOTO in 2008 or so: “A deposit guarantee of $25K will be enough.” Thankfully Rudd & Swan didn’t listen to the idiot. If a $25K guarantee had been implemented then companies, people with savings, rich people etc etc would have been down the bank quicksmart withdrawing balances to deposit in other accounts and other banks or keep as cash. In the uncertainty of the times you think all those people withdrawing wads of money couldn’t start a run? Be all to easy then. Lehman Bros had fallen, Royal Bank of Scotland and so on. Crisis was in the air. The ANZ in particular, the smallest of the Big Four, would have fallen if there had been a run, WestPac not that far from it. All this would have depressed confidence and therefor spending. If a bank had fallen the Commonwealth would have to step in and quickly too. $Bns of liabilities. |
