Rugby League great Hazem El Masri has been charged with assaulting his 25-year-old wife.

The Canterbury Bulldogs legend, 39, who reportedly split from his first wife Awra in February last year, has been charged with domestic violence-related assault causing actual bodily harm and common assault.

The assault is believed to have happened at their Bankstown home and El Masri is due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday.

The devout Muslim and devoted family man shocked the league community when he split with his first wife, Saudi Arabian-born Palestinian Arwa Abousamra.

The couple had been married for 13 years and have three young children.

Not all Australians are from England. Probably more to do with Christianity and societal pressures. In Australia in the 1890's for instance you behaved yourself amongst society. It was shameful to be looked down upon. Probably more a Victorian way of behaving in society that was common throughout western countries at the time.

That's an amazing 231,000 per year. Not all men hitting women of course, but DV is alive and well in Australia.

They have redefined domestic violence to include harsh words without any violent acts, perhaps that is why numbers have increased.

These harsh words don't have to contain threats.

have you noticed with our cockeyed laws.. when someone goes before the court his/her previous is not allowed to be mentioned...to all intense and purpose an offender is there for the first time...

and as we know a huge amount of ethnic violence is just not reported at all.. THROUGH FEAR.

children are murdered...they are killed.. in a VIOLENT situation usually in the home..dont tell me that has not been a pot simmering away for a long time waiting to boil over...

There is already plenty of concern about it, and the current Australian of the Year is an indication of exactly that.  It is not as though there has not been enough attention drawn to the issue.  The problem is that no-one has yet worked out how to re-programme men and women.

  I found that defending is pointless, it only inflames his anger and you get beaten much worse- he is enraged and out of control when he decides you need a beating in the first place- and of course if you can just get out but if your kids are present that is not possible in many cases, you never leave your kids with him when he is like that, their safety always comes first , so we may not have the luxury of just getting out of harms way, if only it were that easy. As most times for me it was at night and even though neighbors would have been aware, they just dont want to get involved. The only thing you can do in a situation like that is try to calm him down and hope he does.

I hate to bring this up.. but each case is individual.. you cannot write a book telling people what to do in a case of violence... it doesnt work  this is one of  the problems..

as we see DVOs are not the answer they thought they would b e....

Of course every situation is different.

Here is my 2 cents worth.

First time someone hits you walk out the door and don't take them back, if you have been assaulted first stop is either the hospital or the police, if you need to go to hospital the doctors will call the police for you.

If you fear reprisals take out an AVO and call the police if they breach the AVO.

If none of that works you have left an evidence trail of unresolved problems which could help you in court if you are charged.

really herb.....I would call it thus....

herb like most things it depends a lot on size and the amount of aggression..at the end of the day... a bloke would always be stronger than a women...

women do not out run men.. or outplay them.. aka tennis or golf...its a fact of life...

a slap is still violence.. its still someone laying a hand on someone else..in an aggressive way...

like it or not... this is what we have to stop....push is as good as a shove if you like...small things grow into bigger things....its the way we are...you puit your hand on someone in a violent way... dont mess around with words.... it is what it is...WRONG.

we do not allow hitting smacking children anymore.....we went too far...so what happens we say NO MORE ZERO...because some of us dont seem to understand the difference between a smack and a bash..
