About 1,000 Syrian refugees will begin arriving in Western Australia before Christmas, Premier Colin Barnett has confirmed.

It comes after the Federal Government agreed in September to permanently resettle 12,000 refugees from Syria.

Mr Barnett said the refugees' arrival would be staged over a number of months, and they would be resettled in houses throughout WA rather than in camps.

"We expect they'll start to arrive before Christmas, yes," he said.

Mr Barnett said he expected more than half of those who would end up in WA would be children.

The Claremont Showgrounds and Leeuwin Barracks were initially suggested for camp-style accommodation, however the Premier said those sites would not be needed.

"They will all be found accommodation. There may be some initial institution accommodation for those who need further medical care," he said.

"Many will be traumatised from the experiences they've been through.

"So we'll make sure we provide the best care we can for them, and those family groups will just be assimilated into the community both in Perth and in country areas, and that planning is well underway."

"A lot of people very generously have offered the use of homes that they own but are not occupied."

Mr Barnett said planning for the arrival of the refugees was ongoing, and discussions were being held weekly between the State and Federal Governments.

Lapland Ski Resort and 4-Star Ramada Hotel to Become Permanent Migrant Housing

Last week I reported that Germans lost their jobs at the four-star Hotel Maritim so that it could house Muslim migrants. The workers and shop owners in this hotel, some of whom had worked there for over 25 years, were told a few weeks ago that they would no longer have jobs, because the hotel would be converted into migrant housing.

And in Sweden, they plan to house Muslim migrants at the Lapland Ski Resort, while Swedes suffer under a housing shortage.

More than 600 asylum seekers are set to move into the world’s most northerly ski resort as Sweden struggles to find enough temporary accommodation for record numbers of new arrivals.

Riksgränsen, which sits 200 kilometres above the Arctic Circle close to Sweden’s border with Norway, is set to welcome the refugees following a deal between the resort’s owner and the Swedish Migration Agency, Migrationsverket.
“As everyone knows, there is a refugee crisis in the world. Now asylum seekers are arriving in Sweden and Migrationsverket has a major urgent need to find temporary housing to accommodate all those who need help. We at Lapland Resorts AB are very pleased to be able to help,” Sven Kuldkepp, CEO of Lapland Resorts, told Swedish newspaper Norrbottenskuriren via email on Wednesday.

“Why leave it empty and cold when it can be quite full and warm,” he added in a separate comment.
Kuldepp explained that the refugees would be allowed to stay in Riksgränsen until February 2016, when the main tourist ski season would get under way.
He said that the plan would “not affect our ordinary activities” but added that he hoped that his resort would also be able to create jobs for some of the asylum seekers.
The move comes amid a push from Sweden’s Social Democrat-led government to encourage municipalities across Sweden to take in more refugees.

At the moment, the vast majority of asylum seekers end up in either Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö.
But Northern Sweden is becoming a more common base for asylum seekers. On Friday a group of 19 Eritreans landed in Luleå and were taken to Östersund as part of the first phase of a programme to relocate tens of thousands of refugees within the EU.

However some campaigners have raised concerns about people raised in Africa or the Middle East adapting to the dark and freezing conditions in the region.
In January, a group of refugees taken to a housing centre near Östersund initially refused to get off a bus after claiming that they had been told by officials that they would be living close to Stockholm and instead finding themselves driven 15 hours north.

“We were coming to an area in the middle of the forest we know nothing about, just snow and wind and nothing else,” Esam Taha, 36, from Syria, told The Local this week, reflecting on the chaos.

“It was terrible, just wind and snow, and the roads were slippery. The moment we got out of the bus we slipped and fell down,” he explained.

But the asylum seeker says he now expects to settle in the area and argues that other refugees might not find it too tricky to adapt to the frozen north.

“If I find an apartment in Östersund, of course I will stay here, because all my friends are here, all my Swedish friends are here. This city is a small city and a quiet city, and the people here are really really nice and I like it, but it’s a big problem to find an apartment,” he said.

Taha added that he was studying at a riding and hunting centre and volunteering at a school while he waited for his residency to be approved.

More refugees have sought asylum in Sweden so far in 2015 than in any other year in the Nordic nation’s history, new figures released by the country’s Migration Agency revealed on Monday.

86,223 people have launched cases, surpassing a previous record set in 1992 when 84,016 people sought asylum following fighting in the Balkans.

Officials in the Swedish capital announced on Monday that they were planning to build a new refugee reception zone around the city’s central station, while Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said last week that tent camps would likely be needed in order to provide enough shelter for new arrivals reaching Sweden as the winter sets in.

The important thing to remember is that Australia is ONLY taking refugees from Turkey and Jordan, for example, and not from Germany and other places where these people have traipsed halfway across Europe to. Australia is taking in the GENUINE refugees who just want to be safe. Kudos to Abbott for taking this stance and not taking in the country-shoppers.

No nufty.  The detention is always to safely ascertain the story and the claim.  It's unfortunate that they then do indefinite by simply not processing.

You do understand that the refugees who are not refugees really are not refugees so they didn't qualify in the first place to be refugees ?

Of the refugees who are refugees they are all legal.

Even economic refugees who do not qualify for mandatory assistance are still genuine refugees, Australia not being willing or compelled to assist them does not mean that they are not genuine refugees or that they have done anything illegal by requesting to be assessed for refugee status.

They're being processed slower by the Coalition because the Labor Party didn't bother and pretty much gave all of them a free pass without proper checks, hence the rapes and murders by some who were given asylum by Rudd & Gillard.

You are either a refugee or you are not

So what is "a refugee who is not a refugee"? No such thing

Did you enter the country legally i.e. where's your passport and VISA? If not - you are an illegal.

Step 2
You can be detained regardless if you are legal or not. Immigration gets to determine if they accept you or not. They can revoke your VISA or issue a VISA

By you logic anyone could go to any place and claim to be a refugee and therefore should be treated as a refugee.

I'll remember that next time i want to have a holiday in an expensive country. I'll just land there, claim asylum and live in assisted housing for a few weeks and then change my mind and come home. Could save thousands in hotel bills.

They enter illegally.
Then they claim to be refugees.
Then they are assessed.
Then they are found to be either genuine refugees or fakers.

If the latter, they remain illegal entrants with no claim and no rights to remain legally.

It happens to be the truth.  The moment a person claims asylum from an officer of the state from which he/she seeks asylum - that asylum seeker is a legitimate asylum seeker, who only requires to be properly processed to ensure genuine asylum seeker status.

That is the LAW.

There is no comparison between asylum seekers and illegal immigrants, and an asylum seeker cannot be an illegal immigrant since he/she has not yet immigrated, and has indeed clearly stated an intention to NOT be an illegal immigrant by seeking asylum, and cannot immigrate until properly processed as an asylum seeker.

Not hard, eh?
