It's an unworkable system if you need unanimous support for any change.

Tear it up and start again.

Premier Andrews in Victoria, said he does not support an increase in the GST.   :)

The GST should be 15% and should apply to everything. This would enable governments to scrap a myriad of other taxes while maintaining an increase in overall revenue.

This is what I mean. The Labor states will scupper any change for political purposes.

Why should Qld be able to scuttle GST change?

It isn't just Qld any state can do it or a combination of most states.

This was the intended purpose of the process the GST was set to 10% and this process was put into place to ensure that it stays at 10%.

The Liberal party's intention was to have a 10% GST, not a 15% GST.

Labor was vehemently against offshore detention. They only did it half-arsed because they ran out of other options. neither the carbon tax nor Labor's illegal immigrant policy were good for the nation. Both were extremely costly and provided no benefit whatsoever.

Carbon Tax saw huge reduction in CO2 releases. How is spending over a billion dollars for some refugees (when refugees economically have net positive effect on the economy in the long term) good money? Where is your CBA on that? Oh wait doesn't exist, because all economists agree that Refugees are good for the economy in the long run, even your oh so precious IPA.

Australians paid $14b to reduce global emissions by 0.004%. Australia's emissions dropped by a paltry 1.4% - hardly something to be proud of, especially when you look at how much money was spent doing it. So if we want to achieve even a 50% reduction, we only have to fork out around $700bn to do it! Besides, emissions were already falling before the carbon tax came into effect. So it's true effect is probably even less than this.

Yes it was meant to be an unworkable system - that was the point in its design. People argued that it was stupid at the time but the conservatives all supported it. Many even laughed about how effective it was to ensure that the Liberals would get elected and a GST would be implemented.

That was the point giving the impression that a GST once implemented could not be changed was a major reassurance that allowed the Howard government to be re elected with the lie of the never ever GST as their core policy.

stop finding dumb excuses ... even Abbott was on record saying the carbon tax was the best way to deal with reducing emissions

they opposed offshore detention and the carbon tax purely for political gain

All changes still require legislation, which by its nature can ignore the problem.

The issue is getting the senate to support the changes.

The carbon tax and ETS are the brain child of the oligarchy to create a $2 trillion dollar carbon derivatives market to tax the peoples of this Earth on the air they breath.

Rothschilds, Rockerfellas etc are all laughing on their way to the bank.

His son has even published a book on how to survive.

A silly argument straight out of CRA Mining's 1989 songbook.

One person on the dole is claiming less than 0.000005% of consolidated revenue each year, so it doesn't matter if they look for work or not, right?

Armchair_Politician wrote on Nov 2nd, 2015 at 9:34am:

Under DA, we're spending nearly as much for a RISE in emissions because over 75% of the 144 projects funded by this crap corporate welfare policy were pre-existing. DA is ineffective. We're still paying for it: the only difference is a transparent direct cost on polluting companies has been converted into a hidden cost buried within consolidated revenue that everyone else pays for.

It delivers very little in an economic downturn. The major problem faced by the states in the GFC was that their income stream dried up.

One of the main issues with a GST is that when you need it the most it isn't there.
