What has Turnbull done to protect us from Terrorists?

Sending a war ship to help France?
What will it do - sit on the seas while watching the French air force planes?

What about at home?

Has anyone got faith that Turnbull knows what he's doing?

In a globalised world politicians seek peer approval from their fellow politicians, if the general consensus amongst those politicians is to let hordes of muslims into the country, some of which will kill our children, then thats what a consensus politician like Turnbull will do.
He has two crowds that he must play to, the voters here and the global community, a lot of which is comprised of the insane left.

Can't see how it is any different to Abbott or any Labor leader considering his restraints.

He is probably weaker than most but the real job of protecting us is only hampered by political grandstanding which is all that they do - any of them.

I would say that his less hard line attitude locally is more likely to help a bit by leading to less local Muslims being pushed towards more radical options.

I see the biggest local issue and most easily preventable is the push toward radicalisation of the Muslim youth and in this area Abbott was pushing as hard as he could. Abbott was more part of the problem so Turnbull would represent an improvement in this critical area if he can get his rabid ministers under control which does not look too likely.

That WAS the start of a strategy. It was the drawing of the line in the sand after which we draw that line a little further on and the further on again.

Honestly the best way to protect Australians from Terrorists is to integrate far better Arabs into the Australian fold and stand in solidarity and not fall for IS' game of fear that drives people to ostracize the Islamic community.

You can't actually protect people from Terrorists, all a Terrorist needs to do is make a homemade bomb from an online recipe and blow up a shopping mall, or buy an illegal firearm from bikies and shoot up a school. Not exactly hard. What needs to happen though is prevention and looking at the root cause of radicalization is the issue and generally it's angry, loner, young men who instead of engaging in self-criticism, instead blame everyone else for the fact they personally are unlikable or dickheads. This isn't unique among Islam, one only needs to go on Reddit or look at "Gamergaters" or PUA's to see the exact same thought process among young white men.

On action against IS. Sending is ground troops is a no no, I would even argue that mass bombing campaigns would further be counterproductive. Most join IS originally stemming from victimization from western foreign policy, instead of the west going in, the West should rely on and support the Kurds and "moderate rebels" to at least give the impression the region is sorting out it's own issues without Western imposition.

The rest of the nation will maintain its current terror level.

If people take the terror alert seriously, Brussels will be "shut down tomorrow," CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said.

"It suggests they have something specific and credible at the intelligence front pointing them in the direction that there may be a terrorist plot in the works," he said. "It also suggests they don't have a handle on it, that they don't know where these plotters are or where they're coming from."

The increase in alert level for Brussels comes as authorities investigating last week's terror attacks in Paris conduct raids in Belgium as they work to identify and take down the network of terrorists behind the carnage.

Salah Abdeslam, 26, is the subject of an international search warrant. He was last seen driving toward the Belgian border when police stopped and questioned him a few hours after the attacks, not knowing that he was allegedly involved. His whereabouts are unknown.

The answer, according to new guidance from the UK's National Counter Terrorism Security Office (Nactso), is to run, or hide behind "substantial brickwork" or "heavy reinforced walls."

Which in the cold light of day, could sound pretty intuitive. Except, for some of the people caught up in the Paris attacks on Friday, it wasn't.

The new guidance has been released after some of those at the Bataclan Music Hall reportedly lay down and remained still, while terrorists indiscriminately fired at the crowd.

Of the 129 people who lost their lives in the Paris attacks, 89 were music fans who had gone to see band "Eagles of Death Metal" perform.

If you do find yourself in the middle of attack, the report advises following three principles:

1.) Run:

Identify the safest route and escape if you can. Insist others come with you, and leave belongings behind.

2.) Hide:

If you can't run, then hide -- try and find a secure hiding place, ideally behind heavily reinforced walls.
And remember that bullets can travel through glass, wood, brick, and metal. Also make sure that mobile phones are turned to silent.

3.) Tell:

Once you're able to, call the police and give them as much information as possible -- where are the suspects and what do they look like? How many people remain inside the building?

Mr Turnbull repeated his rejection of calls from within his party for Australian troops to fight on the ground in Syria.

"I have to report to the House that the consensus of the leaders I met at the G20, at APEC and at the East Asia Summit, is that there is no support currently for a large US-led Western army to attempt to conquer and hold ISIL-controlled areas," he said.

"There are currently no plans for a significant change in the level or the nature of Australia's military commitment in Iraq and Syria.

"No such change has been sought by our allies — if one were we would of course carefully consider it.

"Current advice to the Government is that the unilateral deployment of Australian combat troops on the ground in Iraq or Syria is neither feasible or practical."

Mr Turnbull also announced the Government would move to a new terrorism alert system.

"I can inform the House that the National Threat Assessment Centre, or NTAC, that sits within ASIO will this week transition to the new National Terrorism Threat Advisory System," he said.

"The new system will provide the public with more information on the nature of the threat we are facing.

"The adoption of a five-tiered threat system will also provide ASIO with greater flexibility in determining threat levels, reflecting the need to adapt to an evolving security environment."

After Mr Turnbull's speech, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten pledged to continue to work in a bipartisan fashion with the Government.

"We worked with Mr Abbott and we will do so again with Mr Turnbull," he told Parliament.

Like the Prime Minister, Mr Shorten called for a careful approach to dealing with terrorism.

"Words and ideas, hearts and minds are at the core of winning the struggle against terrorism," he said.

Mr Shorten is also against the idea of deploying combat troops to the region.

"We do not want to perpetuate another cycle as occurred following the invasion of 2003," he said.

"A large-scale troop movement, civil unrest and ongoing violence, escalation, withdrawal and eventual return.

"We can and we must provide Iraqi armed forces with the skills and trainings to repel and overcome Daesh, to focus on building their own capacity to train themselves and to protect themselves.

"We understand the very real risk of a protracted ground war, involving Australian personnel in danger with limited potential for it to contribute to the long-term solution we should be seeing.

"In the short term, an escalated presence of western troops will only feed the propaganda of Daesh."
