A suspected asylum seeker boat has made it near Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island before being intercepted by the Australian Navy.

Locals on the island told SBS WA Correspondent Ryan Emery, who is on Christmas Island, that it was the first time such a boat had made it that close since 2013.

Speaking down the line from Christmas Island, Mr Emery said locals told him the boat arrived within 200 metres of the cove in the early hours of this morning and was moved to Smith's Point.

He said it appeared Navy staff had boarded the boat and given the occupants life jackets.

It was unclear whether they would be taken to the mainland or whether the boat would be towed back to its origin however Mr Emery said it appeared the boat was moving further out to sea.

The Department of Immigration has been contacted for comment

This is a test for Turnbull.

If they got within 100 metres of Christmas Island, they were in Australian territory and able to claim asylum.  They cannot lawfully be towed back out.

Almost all the boats during Rudd/Gillard's time went to Xmas Island. It make sense as its  Australian territory and much closer to Indonesia.

Christmas Island shire president Gordon Thomson said locals spotted the fishing boat early on Friday morning about 100 to 200 metres from Smith Point, the entry to the island's harbour.

2 Laps of an Olympic pool and they were on terra firma , remind us again how much border protection is costing us righties ? More than resettling them I bet.

There are two possibilities: 1. The first boat that tests the blockade in over a year just happens to slip through or 2. There are are a lot more boats being stopped and turned around on the high seas than we're led to believe.

If its 2, then the libs mantra about stopping the boats is a complete joke.

12 people, normally they pack them in like sardines in a tin so this sounds like some fishermen who got lost or broke down , who were then rescued by our Navy and taken home.

I'll assume you are serious.  Yeas, unless you are blind, you can easily see 100 and 200 metres.   Some very fast sprinters can run 100 metres in about ten seconds, and 200 in about 21 seconds.
