Title: Refugee Boat Reaches Australia
Post by Greens_Win on Nov 20th, 2015 at 11:02am
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2015/11/20/asylum-seeker-boat-intercepted-near-christmas-island

A suspected asylum seeker boat has made it near Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island before being intercepted by the Australian Navy.

Locals on the island told SBS WA Correspondent Ryan Emery, who is on Christmas Island, that it was the first time such a boat had made it that close since 2013.

Speaking down the line from Christmas Island, Mr Emery said locals told him the boat arrived within 200 metres of the cove in the early hours of this morning and was moved to Smith's Point.

He said it appeared Navy staff had boarded the boat and given the occupants life jackets.

It was unclear whether they would be taken to the mainland or whether the boat would be towed back to its origin however Mr Emery said it appeared the boat was moving further out to sea.

The Department of Immigration has been contacted for comment

“If the Government really does care about saving lives at sea, they wouldn’t tow this boat away from Christmas Island, they would let it land safely.”

Christmas Island Shire president Gordon Thomson has told HuffPost AU he was concerned about the seaworthiness of the boat and wanted to know whether it was given port clearance.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was asked about the boat arrival, specifically where crew and passengers would be taken, during a press conference in Darwin.

"As you know, we don't comment on operational matters," he told reporters. "I can't help you other than to say that we do not comment on operational matters. "

If they got within 100 metres of Christmas Island, they were in Australian territory and able to claim asylum.  They cannot lawfully be towed back out.

If Libs cant protect our borders from those seeking asylum in a rickety old boat how is it the Libs are protecting us from heavily financed terrorists. Best we run with Turnbull and look for a diplomatic solution, Aborts plan is clearly a failure.

How far from Indonesia is Xmas island?
How far from Australia is Xmas Island?

They made it to Xmas Island they didn't make it to Australia.

Almost all the boats during Rudd/Gillard's time went to Xmas Island. It make sense as its  Australian territory and much closer to Indonesia.

So one boat slips through the blockade.

There are two possibilities: 1. The first boat that tests the blockade in over a year just happens to slip through or 2. There are are a lot more boats being stopped and turned around on the high seas than we're led to believe.

If its 2, then the libs mantra about stopping the boats is a complete joke.

12 people, normally they pack them in like sardines in a tin so this sounds like some fishermen who got lost or broke down , who were then rescued by our Navy and taken home.

Are there children on board?

Is anyone sick on board?

Surely Mr Turnbull can't expect the good people of Australia to vote for him when he keeps this sort of information under wraps.

We want a transparent government, transparent in every way.

We won’t be told a damn thing.

Can turnbacks still happen or has Turncoat mended relations with Indo and agreed no turnbacks?

If that is the case there will be a flood of boats.

I voted other. I would not want Tony Abbott back under any circumstances. Abbott had all the finesse of a race-track bookmaker. Trust Turnbull? Well . . . more than I would the Greens or Labor who would simply open the doors. Turnbull is bringing in 12,000 Syrians at your expense, so I don't see much difference.

No-one?  Ask Rudd, he would have done a few focus groups on what people thought of country shoppers arriving by boat.

It is only a vocal minority that actually wants them washing up.  The majority are perfectly happy with Labors punitive measures that stopped the boats.

Note to Gregg who seems a bit confused, stopping the boats was an election promise directed at a domestic audience and refers to country shoppers washing up on Australian borders.  It doesn't refer to country shoppers drowning in the Mediterranean.  It is astonishing that that even needs to be explained to you.

Where is the boat now?

Does anyone know?

Has it been towed out to sea?

Are the eight asylum seekers being protected by the Australian Navy/Border Control?

Have they been transferred to another boat?

Are they having their hands burnt?

Are they being kicked?

We need to know, it is our business.

Get used to the idea of a thumping electoral loss for labor next year.
