I think the Lib Party will be the next Party to ditch its Leader. It won’t be Morriscum they turn to either, he has proved to be useless. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has backed Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey's claim that the Coalition would be on track to deliver a budget surplus in the first year of taking office.
Earlier, Mr Abbott stopped short of guaranteeing a surplus in the Coalition’s first year, instead arguing the budget position would be ‘‘better’’ than under Labor.
A 50-page booklet launched by Mr Abbott at a campaign rally on Sunday commits the Coalition to ‘‘get the budget back under control’’ and ‘‘live within our means’’, but does not spell out a timeframe.
Mr Hockey told the National Press Club last year: ‘‘Based on the numbers presented last Tuesday night we will achieve a surplus in our first year in office and we will achieve a surplus for every year of our first term.’’

On Monday, Mr Hockey said he had not retreated from the pledge.
‘‘Our commitment is emphatic,’’ Mr Hockey told ABC Radio’s AM program.
‘‘Based on the numbers published today, we will deliver a surplus in our first year and every year after that.’’
But Mr Abbott did not guarantee a surplus in the first year when he appeared on morning television, saying the government had not revealed its new budget figures.
He said the government had withdrawn its repeated pledge to deliver a surplus in the 2012-13 financial year.
‘‘We’ve got to see their figures before we can tell you exactly what we’ll do but I tell you what . . . the fiscal position will always be better under the Coalition because budget surpluses and reducing debt, paying back debt, that’s in our DNA,(’’ Mr Abbott told the Seven Network.
At a media conference in Brisbane later on Monday, Mr Abbott said Mr Hockey's comments were right.
Mr Abbott added: ‘‘Based on the published figures we believe we can deliver surpluses in each year of the first term of a Coalition government and we expect the Labor party; we expect the incumbent government to publish new numbers as soon as possible.’’
Mr Hockey said the government would not reveal the budget's current state so until the pre-election fiscal outlook was released ''we do not know what the funding envelope is for our commitment''.
Finance Minister Penny Wong said the Coalition would have to make big cuts to fund its promises.
‘‘Well there are no positive plans for the future in Mr Abbott's latest glossy pamphlet. There's certainly no real solutions,’’ she told AM.
‘‘But there is one plan which is perfectly clear and that is he wants to hide the cuts he has to make to health and education until after the election.’’
Ms Wong said the Coalition would need to make ‘‘very savage’’ spending cuts to fund Mr Abbott’s desire to reverse the government’s changes to private health insurance, cut the company tax rate, and spend more on infrastructure.

When he was Shadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey promised that "we will achieve a surplus in our first year in office and we will achieve a surplus for every year of our first term.''

Well, a couple of years on including one where Mr Hockey has been running Treasury and fiscal policy, it seems humiliation or capitulation are the order of the day for the world's most complacent Treasurer.

Here's why.



The budget numbers presented in the Pre-Election Fiscal Outlook in August 2013 – that's right, the ones prepared without any involvement from politicians, were as follows. The numbers are the forecasts for the fiscal balance:

2013-14    -$30.1 billion
2014-15    -$24.0 billion
2015-16     -$4.7 billion
2016-17     +$4.0 billion

The cumulative position of the budget was a deficit of $54.8 billion, and there was a budget surplus forecast for 2016-17.

When Mr Hockey delivered his budget in May, those bottom line numbers had changed to the following:

2013-14    -$49.9 billion JOES BUDGET  ;D
2014-15    -$29.8 billion JOES BUDGET  ::)
2015-16    -$17.1 billion ANYBODY SEEN JOE  ;D
2016-17    -$10.6 billion WAIT FOR MYEFO OMG

The cumulative position was a deficit of $107.3 billion, double the deficit inherited from the previous government and that included the raft of policy measures designed to cut spending and hike taxes. There was no surplus in the forward estimates.

Since the budget in May, things on the budget bottom line have undoubtedly got worse. The government has floundered to get its measures through the Senate and just a short while ago, it had to capitulate to the Palmer United Party over the repeal of the mining tax. That humiliation for the government alone has added a further $6.5 billion to the cumulative budget deficit (10,000 times the revenue raised from the mining tax in the most recent quarter), making a mockery of the budget deficit and government debt propaganda peddled by the Coalition parties.

Budget policy under this government is floundering. They are not delivering. The deficits are getting larger even though they gave commitment after commitment to return to surplus and eliminate government debt.

They are failing dismally and unfortunately, Australia will be worse for it. Let's just hope the credit ratings agencies haven't noticed how poor the policy settings actually are.

I remember Longy saying much the same thing when Abbott was in opposition and he thought it clever at the time.

The main difference was that Abbott in fact had no policy.

The fact is that Swan was reducing expenditure by a lot more than the Liberals managed. It is a fact that the responsible Liberals were and are spending more than Labor had.

you do tend to forget... Swan forward estimates were out by zillions.... and he never had to fund NDIS or Gonski..... that didnt happen until 2014... with money that never eventuated.. he expected the mining tax and CARBON TAX that didnt happen... all it did was drive away business....making it even harder...

I am not claiming the Libs got it right... but by golly look what they inherited.. it didnt all go away once they took over...the debt didnt stop and restart...it continued....what annoys me with the left..
they never accept their responsibility in anything.. they kind of pretend 6 years didnt happen...the labor govt didnt spend recklessly like open borders.. lets forget all that...??? that didnt help stuff our economy of course it didnt...I shake my head at the hidden costs of all that....

It might be worth noting that the ORIGINAL 13/14 budget prediction was a $1.5B SURPLUS.  Then just about every couple weeks it grew out more and more . The $30B deficit final estimate was just the latest in a long line of changes and so the final deficit was pretty much exactly what would have occurred regardless, especially since the government was still running on a labor budget the entire time.

.. and a 'budget deficit' is only an estimate, rarely attained, of the balance of revenue v outgoings...

What is needed is proper accounting and a summation of the way the Estimates worked over the Budget period...... not more guesswork piled on guesswork....

Incorrect, when I went to school 50 billion was more than 30 billion, especially when a surplus was promised first year, still a massive Ffor failure for the economic incompetents.

There is a huge drain of cash from the Budget to very wealthy people. Just the super component of that will cost the Budget $50Bn next financial year.

Then there is Negative Gearing, CGT, tighten the FBT, quite the scope for massive Budget savings. Put some of that into increasing NewStart and the economy will get a boost as will GST, income tax and company tax payments. Then there is tackling the tax dodging by large corporations, another cornucopia of revenue. If we can’t do it then hugely increase payroll tax, that is a good tax, the bigger the employer is the more tax he pays.

None of this is rocket science, cods, just a Lib (or Green) govt will offend their wealthy backers. Yes I know a Greens govt will never happen but the principle applies.
