Police are appealing for witnesses after a fire damaged a Christmas exhibition in Bankstown overnight.

About 12.40am (Monday 23 November 2015), emergency services were called to Chapel Road, Bankstown, after reports a Christmas tree was alight.

Officers from Bankstown Local Area Command attended and the blaze was extinguished by Fire & Rescue NSW.

The fire caused about 1m of damage to the branches of the tree and significant damage to the electrical system powering the tree.

Police are investigating the cause of the blaze and are treating it as suspicious.

CCTV will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

What do you think the real problem is? not left or right, not muslim or jesus, the law is too soft here, the police is powerless. Criminals are normally not well punished. Prison is made like hotel. Just put our tree up!    Nice one from Aldi, actually looks semi real!   Set of low voltage LED lights and nicely decorated by the war office.   The grandies are very impressed with Pop as it hasn't fallen over - yet.  Here's hoping no one sets this fella alight
