Title: A disgrace
Post by bogarde73 on Nov 27th, 2015 at 12:52pm
There would still be many elderly people who rely on mail for contact, paying bills etc.
The cost of a stamp is to rise from 70c to $1

Hate to think what a parcel costs.

I haven't posted anything in years but  consideration should be given for senior citizens.

event if you don't have an iPad to pay bills online. why don't call and setup a auto debit account for bills? i don't think auspost should do more. The postage isn't expensive, it's nearly a wellfare.

Yes, how dare a business run their business like a business.

When running a business, "customer service" needs to be considered also.

The elderly are about the only people still writing letters. But even they can (and do) organise automatic bill payment so that limits it even more. But you can't ask AP to run at a significant loss.

Most elderly I know have a computer and have done for years and are not afraid of using the Net to buy stuff online or do their banking that way.  I get all sorts of "rude" jokes from elderly rellies.  ;D

In the 1990s elderly people still used paper and pen but not these days. Most of them have a "smart phone" as well.

It depends what you mean by elderly.

Over 80's don't do tech, they stand in the post office queue to pay their bills and also have cheque accounts and a bank passbook. They got well left behind.

I saw they were selling JEGGINGS in the post office here in ACT.....I mean what next,,, bras!!!!!...

they are doing everything they can to make the post office viable.. good on em...mind you I do think the head honcho could take a pay cut.

Though his point is couched in sarcasm, i actually agree with gandalf on this.

I would say,    ....that if it reasonably costs $1 for Aust Post to process and to deliver a letter today, in Australia, then i'm happy pay the $1.

bogarde73,

Its $1 !

Think about it,      ....you can't get very much at all, for $1 today, in Australia !!!

bogarde73,

If you are on a senior pension, Aust Post will actually give you a 1st small stamp book, with 5 'letter stamps' free.

You simply have to ask for them for it, and produce proof of being on a senior pension.

If you require more stamps, you can get more stamps, at a concessional price.

I call BS on this subject. Clearly the choice is $ 1 postage or no mail delivery because it is not profitable.

Australia Post does not owe an obligation to anybody in regard to mail service prices. Australia Post is not a welfare provider.

Historically......it does and it is.  Anyone remember the PMG?

About the only time I use the post nowadays is when I send off my invoices at the end of the month.

Costs me 90c.

I doubt an increase will bankrupt me.

Worked for the PostMaster-Generals department for about 11 months - nothing to do with mail though.

Maybe we need to define 'elderly. To my mind, that means 75+.  Although, according to a victorian report on 'elderly drivers' they defined it as anyone 49yo and up.
