FOREIGN Affairs Minister Julie Bishop could give ABC Fact Check a run for its money.

The Deputy Leader poked fun of Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek in Parliament on Tuesday for previously claiming the island of Eneko had “disappeared”.

Responding to a question from Ms Plibersek about climate change targets, Ms Bishop seized the opportunity challenge assertions the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister made on radio last month.

“The island that she says has literally disappeared into the sea has in fact got a residence on it,” Ms Bishop said.

“It has got a beautiful and accessible beach getaway.

“You can rent a bungalow for $50 a night. It is in good condition, we’re told. There are houses, lawns, gardens, there is a toilet block and there are picnic tables.”

Ms Bishop produced a photograph of the island as she told Parliament Ms Plibesek had claimed the island had “just literally disappeared into the sea.”

“It seems to me that when the Deputy Leader of the Opposition makes a claim, people had better test it very carefully,” she said.

“Scaremongering, exaggerating, hyperbole and that is news to the people of Eneko.”

Eneko is part of the Republic of Marshall Islands in the Pacific, located about halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

Was  Anebok an Island or atoll?

Who would have thought strong winds could cause large waves at high tide, the global warming religion must think this type of erosion is unprecedented.

The fact they have cement sea walls shows it's a battle to keep the ocean out.

I live on the waterfront in Sydney there has been no change in sea levels for the last 25 years where I live.

So assuming Labor's transcript came from Hansard, which it probably did; and assuming the Lib's used Hansard; why would you question it?
It seems that Plibersek should have checked Hansard for accuracy; after all it is her statement.

I have finally found Anebok. Though I can find no trace of it being inhabited. Perhaps too low lying?

Which according to the dated file above 2013, was still above water. Sea level has dropped since. Overall sea level change has been less than half metre, and that a sudden drop in 97/98, El Nino? Apart from that the change is about 25cm. The Island should still not be below water. Although there is a history of sand mining in the region.

The transcript is an ABC Radio interview.  I don't understand the reference to its being incorrect as it clearly states Anebok......no mention of Eneko.

Even though Mr De Brum said the island disappeared in the last 12 years? Have a look at the graphic and go back 12 years. Sea level is now lower than it was 12 years ago, and lower than 1999, 16 years ago. She seems to have bought into a furphy. Hook, Line, Sinker.

Julie spent a lot of time in not answering the question and there is a very good reason for that.

Plibersek believes an island disappeared. I've got a bridge she can buy.

Julie yabbered off topic till her time expired and said nothing of value and at no point looked like answering the question in any way.

this isn't about the island ... Up until today I'd never heard of the island so I have no idea if it has disappeared or not. This is about Bishop trying a 'gotcha' moment in parliament and instead making a complete fool of herself.

Politicians should worry more about running the country and less about playing games.

Having seen the ABC transcript along with Labors admission their transcript was wrong that's evidence labor cannot even do a simple thing like get a transcript right.

99% of the time the question on relevance is not even started to be asked before it is overruled on the basis that the answer is broadly close to topic. As soon as the person making the claim says the word relevance the speaker will rule without hearing any details I am not sure that even if it is wrong that it is not still considered relevant.

I understand Aussie's link Lee........I can usually locate what I'm searching for and it's really bugging me that I can't find this Labor transcript that they say was wrong.

As these islands are a result of volcanic activity then what comes up can also go down and these sort of islands can gradually recede due to sinkage.

So Mrs Pleb may have been right that the isle was disappearing but not due to the sea rising but due to the isle sinking.

My guess from the start was that someone tried to check to make sure that it was correct and because the Island they had didn't exist it wasn't listed. They then assumed that it had to be the other one and that the spelling they had transcribed was not originally correct.

That surely is very credible but it adds to the importance that Bishop make deeper enquiries to ensure she had the right Island.
