Tony Abbott accuses Julie Bishop of lying about leadership spill conversation


Former prime minister Tony Abbott has accused Foreign Minister Julie Bishop of lying in a recent comment about the lead-up to February's failed leadership spill.

It has been revealed Ms Bishop was with Malcolm Turnbull in February when he reportedly phoned Scott Morrison and offered to make him treasurer in a future Turnbull government.

Mr Morrison has not denied the phone call took place but has denied he was offered the job.

Earlier today, Ms Bishop said she told Mr Abbott about the conversation and Mr Turnbull's plans.

"Of course, of course," Ms Bishop told Channel Nine.

But Mr Abbott said that claim was false.

"The claim that Julie Bishop made on Channel Nine that she told me about the conversation between Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison that she witnessed is false," he said.

If Abbott was going to fade away into the sunset, he would have resigned by now.  He is still there for one reason, and that is not to occupy a seat (when he feels like it) on the backbenches.

Not an issue.  It could have happened at the same weekend Hockey's replacement is elected, and Labor have everything to gain in any by-election, so there would be no whinge from them.

Calling someone of the opposite gender doesn't make one a misogynist. You do realise that, don't you? Just because Gillard put her woes down to her being attacked for simply being a woman doesn't mean she was targeted because of her gender. You do realise that, don't you? For him to be a misogynist, Abbott would've had to say something like, "You belong at home caring for the kids, Julie/Julia, not holding down a job!". So it comes out that all of Abbotts most loyal troops were involved in the coup from the very beginning.

They were all positioning themselves in under the new leadership 6 months before Abbott knew anything about it.

Tough question, Abbott has a proven track record and has self admitted to being lose with the truth - that doesn't bode well.

Then we have the rest - I mean ALL the rest from every angle of the political spectrum. Bottom line, if it's a politician then it no doubt lies to suit it's own ends at some point or several points depending on context, situation and what perceived advantage can be gained from said lying...

Awesome political environment we have here, I mean really.

The only upside possibly though, if this is one of the big issues, we can't be in too much trouble. I think there needs to be a study (if there is not one already) to work out if the population only gets ok to good politicians during times of crisis and the rest of the time we get the rubbish like we have now and for the last few decades.

Maybe we should all relax and celebrate the good times...

the word around town is/was.. the GETUP was responsible for that sign... and they made sure it behind Abbott not the other way round..

Historically over 50% of previous PM's have stayed in parliament after losing the leadership.

Good money for doing little and a great pension.

Tony has as much right to stay on as any of them had in the past.
