I would say that most of the residence would agree with you John

too many small men/women using local council as a power grab to try and push their idiotic ideologies onto the masses

like those halfwit councillors that spent 30,000 each to go to the climate BS in Paris uninvited

all they need to do is empty the bins, sweep the streets and fill the bloody potholes

It will see some sound, well managed councils jammed into a marriage with a badly managed council in debt just so the former can pay the latter’s debt.

The Port Adelaide and Enfield merger here was one such. Pt Adelaide had made stupid investments and was in debt. Enfield is an unglamorous area and the council just collected the rubbish etc, built up a nice bank balance which went to pay the Pt Adelaide council debt.

Is it a good idea? Dunno. The huge amalgamated councils will have huge rates revenue coming in to it and that will attract spivs and shonks. Huge councils also take the “local” out of “local councils.”

It's just bs in most cases.

I understand some small regional shires being merged but many of the larger towns/cities has been a case of one propping up another ....

Councillor going from being a community minded volunteer who holds a job & gets paid an allowance to be a Councillor.....

to a fully paid (e.g. $80,000 plus a car - making it a $100k pa)position or a career for the self serving type ...

Councils have have gone from being service & infrastructure oriented into entrepreneurial/property development enterprises..........

where the rates just climb & climb ... & the rate payer is treated as a cash cow for all their grandiose ideas of making money.

This is encouraged by state govts ... in the hope they don't have to provide funding.

Hate to say 'told you so' but this imposter who sold off the Electricity Grid when the stupid public couldn't see what was going to happen 10 years down the road deserve it.

Baird is going to jack petrol 8 cents a litre to pay for bloody ethanol pumps.

What he is doing is catastrophic for the average working Joe.

You mean the likes of the Deputy Sharif of Auburn aren't in the game to provide service to the people?  Well.. I never!  Obviously the ratepayers pay these clowns to sit down and work out how to feather their own nests... talk about corruption of the highest order...

Down here the council is dominated by dairy farmers - who unsurprisingly work everything out for their own best interests, even though the majority of people here have nothing to do with farming (obviously).  We're watching the spectacle of a Taj Mahal new council building and new car park across the road from it taking endless months to construct and end up with a car park that is little different from the original - while our local roads are the roads to perdition and full of pot holes - the Holey Roaders we are.....

This council area is too big to amalgamate - who would we join with?  they've already absorbed all the local councils here and it's basically a big valley bowl complex surrounded by hills on all sides... so we're stuck with the fools we've got.

Sounds to me like a good bit of reorganisation, injecting economies of scale into the whole local govt situation. We can't continue with 100 year old structures to deal with 21st century problems.

Don't see why Clover's fiefdom should be exempt though.

these councils are mini EMPIRES..  they even spend half their time FIGHTING amongst themselves.. its rubbish...

and then we have Auburn Council where they have a developer elected and he closes off street for his own wedding..

  so many use it for their own business.... and are mismanaged to the point of b eing taken over by Administrations...

its about time rate payers  got their monies worth,,. mine go up every year but the services dont...  we used to get road cleaning services...not anymore...we wait for heavy rain

they love looking on the grim side... and most of those councils are labor run....thats why they are dysfunctional 

havent you noticed anything that the Libs do to try to save money this lot scream like babies..and do everything to block it.. I for one am sick of reading about councils who do bugger all except take  trips to sister cities usually somewhere exotic..... or spend months make a decisions that is costing millions..

we created a monster and all its done is GROW

Half the people resources and structure to look after twice as much area  with double the population.

Lots of unemployment created.

Does not look like a good idea on the surface, I suspect many of todays problems relate to them being stretched too thin as it is.

The most likely outcome of compressing it all would be to further entrench and multiply the corrupt elements.
