"Dumped federal cabinet minister Eric Abetz says the ABC's new managing director has to end the "lefty love-in" at the public broadcaster.

Pre-empting a board announcement on Monday, the Liberal senator says Mark Scott's replacement must restore editorial balance to earn the public's confidence.

I've seen my suburb change dramatically. Certain parts of the city I live in don't even look like Australia anymore. I just don't know why they did that. The only thing I can think of was the elite did it to divide the lower classes up and make them easier to control. Sounds paranoid but.....

I moved house and the electoral commission didn't know where I went so I wasn't on the roll. They caught up with me I'm afraid. I didn't vote because there's no difference between all of them. That's why. It's all about the people at the top having the money roll in without as much fuss as possible. Plus they sold our culture and people out to globalisation and multiculturalism. We defend the ABC because it's sits between Labor and Liberal.

I don't even support the views generally aired on the ABC, but I will defend it, because it's basically the only mainstream source where both Greens and Labor have a voice in a media landscape dominated by the Liberals.

And Liberals have flat out more airtime on the ABC than ALL OTHER PARTIES COMBINED. This isn't topics about the Liberals, this is the amount of time Liberal politicians are speaking.

During the entire Carbon Tax debate, I listened to RN 8+ hours a day, only twice did they ever actually talk to a scientist or environmentalist, the rest of the time was assmad farmers and truckers and right wing think tanks like the IPA and the Australian Business Council, In fact, I'm pretty sure Kate "decapitated a teenage girl" Carnell spewing far-right wing propaganda probably has more airtime on RN than any Labor or Green politician combined.

You dont understand what 'unbiased' means. It certainly does not mean equal air-time but rather what occurs in that air time.

If an actual independent review were carried out it might resolve the question but every review is the same - it is either clearly biased or not clearly independent.  The failure to do so makes a strong argument that it is biased.

These places dont pay award and wont hire local Australians. Then why don't you report them to the Fair Work Commission? It's illegal to pay anything less than the Award. Why are you withholding information from the authorities? People get paid full award Make up your minds. ian said they don't get paid the award rate. Is he telling lies? Are you telling lies? I know there are instances of imported scab workers getting ripped off. Did you report this to the FWC, or are you another one like ian who covers up illegal activity?

Reports of Filipino guest workers being subjected to slave labour conditions in Canberra restaurants have shocked local labour activists.

According to the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union, skilled chefs from the Philippines have been lured to Canberra on employer sponsored work visas, only to be treated like slaves and ripped off by unscrupulous employers.

At least 20 guest workers so far have lodged official complaints, ranging from being underpaid, racially abused, forced to work long hours and eat scraps from rubbish bins. A female worker who sustained a severe burn at work was denied time off for medical treatment.

In perhaps the most disturbing incident, police are investigating allegations that a worker who complained about the way he was treated was kidnapped early one morning by five thugs and driven to Sydney to be put on a plane back to the Philippines. He only escaped after the car was pulled over by the police for speeding.

When news of the abuses first broke, the local mouthpiece for the ACT Chamber of Commerce rushed to the defence of the bosses and denied any abuses were happening. But when the complaints were investigated by government officials, they found the workers were entitled to thousands of dollars in back pay and ordered the bosses to pay up.

These abuses are believed to be only the tip of the iceberg because many other guest workers facing the same exploitation, both in Canberra and elsewhere, are too scared to speak up.

The response by the LHMU and other corporate unions has been poor to say the least. Despite being urged by local activists to organise pickets and consumer boycotts, the union has so far failed to do so, although they did manage to find other jobs for some of the affected workers.

Lessons and opportunities

There are some very real dangers lurking here. If the unions let these bosses get away with it, more of them will try to use imported labour to undermine what's left of award wages and conditions. This in turn could spark a racist backlash against fellow workers from overseas who are themselves victims of vicious exploitation.

Yet despite these dangers, there are opportunities unfolding for us to counter the passive ACTU model with a real fighting alternative. We can only do small solidarity actions

the ABC is run by conservative lap dogs ..... if it's biased it's biased toward the right.
