A similar thing happened in Spain, up near the French border in the Basque region. The only difference was that there was an actual fire. So many people tried to get out the opposite exit at once that they got stuck in the doorway and the roof collapsed and trapped them all in the burning theatre. The moral of the story is not to put all your Basques in the one exit.
