Title: Inside the Flowhive Beehive :)
Post by The Mechanic on Jan 31st, 2016 at 9:29pm
my bees seem to really like the new flowhive wasting no time in working in the upper box, sealing the cells and now honey going in.. :)

That's probably why the bloke (with his Dad) are making some dollars out of it.  Well done them, and well done, you.  If your experience matches the schmedia reports, that will 'bee' the only hive your have.

Nothing like home grown honey , my neighbour used to give me a steady supply as a trade off for the many times I got stung mowing my lawn.

Great stuff.... love it... but the bees need it for Winter down here, so you have to leave them their portion... Native Bees only make enough to survive.... leave them alone.....

I went out in a pair of shorts and short sleeve shirt to do the drain...

once the bucket was filled we strained it into another bucket to get the little bits of wax out and that was it..

put it into jars and all done...

none of this getting into the hot bee suit, smoking the hive... taking it apart and pulling the full frames... put the hive back together..get out of bee suit and pack up gear.. spinning the frames... draining the spinner tank into a bucket.. strain it, bottle it.. pull the hive apart again and put the frames back in...

I might have to get another Flowhive or two and get rid of the standard one.. ;)

Are their any leftist bees in the colony that just sit around doing nothing waiting for the honey to come to them?

yes... they are called "Drones"

all they do is try and breed and eat free honey that others have made for free...

they are loafers who get kicked out in winter when stocks are low... lol...

Manuka honey is not the best tasting stuff and not so long ago you couldn't retail the stuff with keepers selling it cheap to Biscuit manufactures.. etc..

then they realised the benefits to it in healing etc...

raw honey is pretty good too.... always buy straight from the keeper..

supermarket garbage has been ultra heat treated and super filtered.. which kills all of the benefits.. apart from it still tastes "ok" ... but not as rich as raw honey..

oh, and ultra heat treating it gives it a longer shelf life without it crystallising.. good raw honey will crystallise quicker as it hasn't been sterilised will all of the good stuff dying off..

retailers are also importing chinese honey etc... the only Australian content was that it was packed here into Australian jars... full of chemicals and chinese pee..

I have been surprised with the feedback about my honey this season... one persons husband said...

"where'd you get that honey?? can you get me MORE of it"

another old lady - "the supermarket stuff has no taste do you have any more?"

so we are starting to get a little bit of a following :)

sure...honey comes from flowers etc

but you need to understand the meaning of "Vegan"

Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom

so crazy vegan's would say that we are exploiting the bees...

I'd prefer to call it, "Mutual Benefit"

should you eat fruits and vegetables?

after all... Farmers are "exploiting" the bees to pollenate the crops to grow produce to sell to the markets...

all crazy stuff..

You need WD40 on those gate hinges ...

A few years ago I witnessed a miracle of Nature that was both terrifying and beautifully awesome at the same time.

I was in my potting shed in the backyard when I started hearing this humming sound which brought me to the door and looking up at the sky where I saw this enormous dark cloud which at first I couldn't make sense of because it was un-pixelated in anyway.

The sky was actually a dark gray with these bees, and the humming grew to a crescendo that was like something out of a 'B'-Grade 1950's Horror movie. I made a dash for the backdoor from where I watched these flying stingers take up residence in the big Camphor tree against the fence in my backyard.

This last winter just gone is the first time they've stayed here without moving north to the warmer climate.

I just knew it..  ;D

bees swarming is not a worry.. most people crap themselves but in reality the bees feel vulnerable and are not looking for a fight as they have no protection..

put them in a box with their queen and watch them come out swinging if you disturb them... lol

I wasn't wearing a bee suit or netting or anything during the swarm... they're not a bother..

Here's a 'swarm' event that nearly cost this woman her life, but as she says, it was the intervention of the Almighty through people's prayers that saved her life.

The police, the paramedics, the nurses, the doctors, the multi-million dollar heart-lung machine, the drip-feed, the anti-venom, etc were all totally unnecessary in bringing her back from the edge of the grave.

many blessings mechanic ,

I believe it is how you say it to be so ..

it certainly does not harm or exploit the bees ,

and the gift from nature they do provide

and so be it
