Aye - I'm 67 in a couple of months and they are falling out of the tree fast.......

"Hey, grand-dad.. how come none of your friends ever show up for funerals?"

"They've already attended their own, son."

He is the labor supporter even Labor could not stomach. He was not just pro-labor, he was idiotically so.

I was brought up  to believe that if you didn't have something nice to say about ones passing you keep your  mouth shut, you obviously had a less than fortunate upbringing. We can only imagine the obituaries the day you free us all of your presence and become maggot food.

If you people weren't so utterly ignorant you wouldnt have to be spoon-fed all this information.  He was refused preselection and ranted evr since.  That pitiful website - IA - is so hopelessly one-side it has become a joke.  Ellis predicted a labor win last election was a haul of 27 seats in QLD.  He claimed that newspoll was criminally corrupt because the results didnt suit him.

Got links to support the highlighted quotes?

The reason why you have to provide links is not for "spoon feeding" but because you've been caught out lying many times and have no credibility.

On second thought, longy, don't bother providing support for the quotes. Just leave them there as proof of your graceless lack of tact, speaking ill of the dead just because their viewpoints differ from your own. Your conduct is disgraceful.

There are some real low-lifes on this forum, but I don't think any of them come close to Longy (except Armpit, of course).

What a despicable little man.

Anyway, back to the topic ...

... Bob was great. His death comes as quite a surprise.

He signed a book for me at a Sydney book signing, many years ago.

A smart man. He'll be missed.

"Bob Ellis is the author of over twenty books, fifty-five screenplays, two hundred poems, five hundred political speeches, a hundred songs and two thousand film reviews."

I had no idea that he had liver cancer.

I didn't even know he was ill.

Thus, it was a huge surprise to me.

Such a shame. He was a very intelligent man who wrote some great books (+ screenplays, poems, etc.).

yes, there were people on here that celebrated when Thatcher died.  Just as there were some that celebrated when Hazel Hawke passed away.  Is that the attitude of some on here?   Because they did it we will too?   By and large, the majority of posters have civility and respect when someone - regardless of their political association passes on - they tend to remember the milestones that person left to the rest of mankind.  They remember the good things.

They did it, so we will too is an extremely childish view to take - but no surprise given from whom it is coming

And where exactly did I take that view? Please point it out to me.

I haven't said anything bad about Ellis, actually and I think it said when anyone dies (except people like rapists and murderers). I am just point out this obvious double standard. In fact it is much worse than a double standard because nobody has said anything bad about Eliis, when you had people actually out there cheering when Thatcher died.

Nor do I recall anyone cheering Hazel's death or saying anything bad about her. As a staunch Conservative I felt sorry for her that that "great Labor man" cheated on and left her for another woman.

It isn't a deflection. Nor do I think that longy or anyone else said anything bad. They just made an observation.

I am just pointing out the double standard. You shouldn't celebrate when anyone dies (apart from some criminals).

There's been a bit of a trend lately.

matty, ian, Longy, Armpit, et al.

If they say it's so, it must be true.

No evidence or cited reference required.

And they wonder why the rest of us treat them with such utter contempt.

Also some disgusting ex-prostitute whose name I can't recall was on Q&A talking about not having a glass of champagne. Nobody on the show or in the audience said anything. They didn't praise it but they didn't condemn it either.

so you don't remember it? and everyone is supposed to run with that?  ;D ;D ;D

There's been a bit of a trend lately.

matty, ian, Longy, Armpit, et al.

If they say it's so, it must be true.

No evidence or cited reference required.

And they wonder why the rest of us treat them with such utter contempt.

you know matty's an aspiring psychologist ... perhaps he's trying

Yes, he's certainly trying.

On second thought, longy, don't bother providing support for the quotes. Just leave them there as proof of your graceless lack of tact, speaking ill of the dead just because their viewpoints differ from your own. Your conduct is disgraceful.

Bob Ellis' political commentary had degenerated to the truly ludicrous and borderline insane.

Right you are Bumjack, Pecker and Slumlord, (sounds like a legal firm). Gentle ribbing of Peter Brock slamming into a tree and calling Princess  Di a slut. Too intellectual  for me.

Well we ignore those as most of the good people on the left would also.
We honour talented & genuine Aussies of whatever side.
I honour Julia Gillard for her hard work .

. . .now that she's off the scene.

Probably, it was a joke about the medias tendency to have a go at people in life (e.g. some of the media running about Dis trysts etc) only to completely ignore that when they die and call them fantastically top people.

I was listening to a interview with Jack Marx and he mentioned the same phenomenon about Steve Irwin, when he was alive, the media were calling him a buffoon etc, when he died, he was an Australian icon etc.

Perhaps it was just another irrelevant leftards attempt at making a name for himself by senselessly insulting the grieving families of anyone that has had a go and or been successful in life. Pitiful no-life leftards have got form; just look at OP.

Unlikely, it was just as likely an overly sensitive rightards attempt at jumping on the outrage bus.

Where are the Chaser boys now? Just like Richard Carlton, Christine Milne, Bob Browne, Peter Garrett, Wayne Swann, Julia Gillard, Tim Flannery and whomever else you care to mention. Still out there, searching for relevance.

Currently hosting the Checkout, a consumer affairs show and Planet America looking at the American elections.

And Richard Carleton is dead isn't he?

Bob Ellis funeral notice if anyone interested in going

Bob’s funeral will be at 11am, this Saturday, 9th April. The service will be held at Frenchs Forest Bushland Cemetery, 1 Hakea Avenue, Davidson. Everyone is welcome to attend. The service will be outdoors at his graveside, and there will be limited seating.

His wake will follow the service. The wake will be at Belrose Hotel, 5 Hews Pde, Belrose, which is a five-minute drive from the cemetery (about a 20-minute walk).

Public Transport Information

There are buses to (or near) the cemetery leaving from Wynyard, Chatswood and Warringah Mall. We recommend travelling early, there may be other people wanting to catch the bus and the buses only every hourish.

From Wynyard – Route 271 (the stop is on Clarence Street, not Wynyard Park)
From Chatswood Rail – Route 281
From Warringah Mall – Route 280 to Forest Way Shopping Centre and change to route 281

There may be other buses.

There is a fair bit of parking, but there may be lots of cars.
