Title: You can take the woman out of Afghanistan
Post by GordyL on Apr 8th, 2016 at 4:14pm
But it appears you can't take her out of the bronze age.

So Ms Zia who came to Australia for what I can only imagine would be to gain the benefits of living in a free open secular society clings to her medieval belief system.

Not only that, she resorts to Islamism, using the laws  of her new country to change things to accommodate her hard line Islamic beliefs.

I have no problem if Ms Zia wishes to get around in a bee keepers suit, she can dress as B1, I could care less. But to use a tax payer funded facility then ask them to change their policy to accommodate her Islamic beliefs of a man not being able to see her 'aurat'?

I'd also love to know the exact details of the "significant conflict"? Was it an Afghan husband per chance who went all 'Talian' at the thought of another man seeing his wife's 'aurat'?

But lawyers say a "significant conflict" arose when she requested female-only care.

Ms Zia is Muslim and believes it is a sin to be touched by a man who is not her husband or close family.

Turns out your ranting about "beekeeper suits" was just your invention.

So once we get passed your hysterics, the actual story turns out the story was rather mundane - a woman in a hospital requesting female-only handling - hardly the hallmarks of a radical/extremist.

She's hardly demanding the system change by requesting female-only care. Get a grip gordy.

At the time she attended her appointment in a PUBLIC hospital system there was no provision to select a doctor of a gender of your choosing.
She took action which has changed policy. Why?

sexist muzzies.

Quote:
A major Melbourne hospital will give priority to requests for female-only care on cultural or personal grounds after a pregnant patient complained about treatment.

Ziarata Zia lodged the complaint with Victoria's Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) after her visit to Monash Health in 2013.

Ms Zia is Muslim and believes it is a sin to be touched by a man who is not her husband or close family.

But lawyers say a "significant conflict" arose when she requested female-only care.

The matter was settled, but it prompted a review of the hospital's policies by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

As a result of the review, the hospital said it would now give priority to requests for a female doctor because of religious or cultural beliefs or past trauma.

"We recognise that for cultural, religious or personal reasons a patient may ask to be seen by a carer of the same gender," Monash Women's director Professor Euan Wallace said.

"We will try to accommodate these requests whenever possible."

Professor Wallace said the hospital had been "clumsy" in communicating the choices on offer to its patients.

"I think what's come out of the review is that some of that hasn't been as visible as we'd like it to have been to the women we care for," he said.

"Essentially we're making the choices available to women more visible."

In a statement, Ms Zia said she welcomed the hospital's policy rethink.

"I'm not scared to ask for a female doctor anymore and I'm relieved that other women won't have the same experience I had," she said.

Melanie Schleiger from Victoria Legal Aid said it took courage for Ms Zia to speak up.

"This is a fantastic outcome, we're really pleased," she said.

"I have a huge amount of respect for Ms Zia.

"It took a tremendous amount of courage to make a complaint of discrimination and she was very keen to see the situation changed for the benefit of other people."

I would give them NO health care.

Yes, and judging by the response of the VEO and HRC, this was not typical or even expected hospital behaviour. I too would think its a fairly basic requirement for a hospital to cater for people who have cultural or personal requirements to be treated by a doctor of the same gender. Especially with something as sensitive as pregnancy matters.

Gandalf, have you had a child through the public system?
An antenatal check up goes a bit like this.

Sit in a waiting room bursting with patients for about 2 hours and get the next OBGYN or midwife available.
It's the public system, you get what you get and you don't get upset. Cost $0.00

If you want to choose your own OBGYN there are no end of alternatives outside of the public system.

Actually I have. I've seen numerous pregnant women request a woman-only doctor for their checkup. Its never been a problem for the hospital we were at. Catering for this is standard - and indeed expected hospital practice - as both the HRC and the VEO seem to agree. The only reason this became a problem is that after the woman made a perfectly reasonable and normal request, the hospital seems to have kicked up a stink (not the woman as you dishonestly infer). The only story here is that we have a hospital not moving into the 21st century.

Well gee whiz gordy, maybe she'd have to come back another time.

If thinking its reasonable and proper for a hospital to have policies to cater for pregnant women who only want to see women doctors is a bronze age belief, then you are firmly set in the stone age.

The stand they took was because there was no female OBGYN available. If you go to a public hospital do you really expect the roster to be adjusted to requirements which have no basis in Medicine?
Should the hospital only employ female OBGYN's to make sure this situation can never occur?

Also, despite your sister's attempts to have the law changed to suit her Islamic beliefs, they were not.

The hospital has only agreed to "give priority to requests for female-only care "

And I think that's perfectly reasonable.
When checking into the reception desk at the antenatal  clinic, oh I'd prefer a female if possible. Sure, no worries or sorry, none on today.

Are you cool with that?

LOL you literally have no point to make gordy.

The hospital policy absolutely was changed (not the law - no one is talking about that). As you say: "The hospital has only agreed to "give priority to requests for female-only care." Which as far as I can tell, was the whole issue to start with. And now you reveal that in fact you think "that's perfectly reasonable."  ;D

So what was your point in all this gordy? All this frothing at the mouth over something that you actually now claim is "perfectly reasonable". And you know what? This hideous 'bronze age' woman agrees with you:

The policy seems to have been changed from you get which ever doctor/midwife is available next to you can ask, and you may or may not be accommodated.

Would a woman who is so religiously devout that she wears a niqab, the second most restrictive religious attire after the burka, accept that requests are welcome but for operational reasons, can not always be accommodated?

You obviously have Stockholm Syndrome and PTSD from the Muzlam violence in Western Sydney schools.   :'(

I taught at a few schools, all public. Afghans, Arabs, Iranians - they were all pretty tough.

But do you know? The most polite and studious ones were the religious Muslims. Girls in hijabs. Boys with their heads stuck in books.

Their parents of those students valued education highly. They weren't too different from the Chinks and Curries we've discussed.

The only reason I can think of is you want to prove your "Western Sydney" credentials. You know, you went to school with a boong, there's a mosque in the next suburb, and your neighbour's a dirty Tree-lopping Paki.

Fair enough then. Although you were referencing an article that was never quoted until now.

More importantly though, your claim that she "demanded" a female  doctor is confected. The sad truth about this thread is she did nothing more than ask for what you now concede is something that is "perfectly reasonable"

This bit:  Two years ago, a significant conflict arose during Ms Zia's antenatal consultation at a Monash clinic

In my experience, hospital staff, particular in emergency centers can be very 'matter of fact' and seem uncaring due to the huge amount of stressed people they see.

Staff in birthing centers, not so much and they're not in the business of causing significant conflict

How do you think a particularly devout Afghan man would react to a male doctor seeing his niqab clad wife's gentiles?
Do you think he was the sourch of the significant conflict

Title: Re: You can take the woman out of Afghanistan
Post by gandalf on Apr 10th, 2016 at 11:07am
Gee gordy, why don't you post the whole quote?

Two years ago, a significant conflict arose during Ms Zia's antenatal consultation at a Monash clinic because she requested a female doctor.

Particular emphasis on the word "requested". Could it be the case, heaven forbid, that the "significant conflict" was a case of hospital staff not taking too kindly to the request? Who knows, maybe they were particularly stressed that day, inexperienced, or just plain intolerant towards a woman in...how did you say? - oh yes, 'beekeeper outfit'. All possible, as indeed is your version - the difference with me is I'm not jumping to baseless conclusions because of an irrational prejudice.

But isn't this an interesting response from Ms Zia:

Quote:
"I'm not scared to ask for a female doctor anymore and I'm relieved that other women won't have the same experience I had," she said.

and this...

Quote:
Professor Wallace said the hospital had been "clumsy" in communicating the choices on offer to its patients.

"I'm not scared...anymore"... hmmm  - interesting choice of words for someone supposedly going around making demands no? Could that possibly suggest she received a less-than-understanding response when she made the request, and maybe that was the cause of the "significant conflict" ?

Also, lets talk about that 'taliban' husband...
- Did the horrible mysoginistic husband create a scene? - No, you just made that up
- Was the horrible mysoginistic husband even involved? - No that is just your baseless assumption
- Is the husband horrible and mysoginistic? No, thats just your prejudiced stereotype

Amazing how you can turn what you, me, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, and it seems the rest of civilized humanity all agree was a request that was "perfectly reasonable" - and should have been an available option at the time - into a rant about sinister 'taliban' muslims and their 'bronze age' views, attempting to change our way of life.

Midwives are the biggest ballbusters in the health system - followed closely by hospital administrators.
