Title: Unemployment down... AGAIN
Post by longweekend58 on Apr 14th, 2016 at 1:42pm
So despite all the negatives of the lefties, unemployment has DROPPED once again to 5.7%.

Time to thank Abbott and Turnbull for a lowering unemployment rate and rising GDP all in an environment of a poor global outlook.

WELL DONE!!!!

during the GFC we still had the mining boom. Now that boom has turned into a bust and still the Libs can keep reducing unemployment.

are you the only person inthe country who is NOT aware that the mining sector has driven off a cliff?  As it has globally? Giiven that it was our major exporter, where is the surprise that that affected GDP?  And since you want to be hopelessly partisan, the collapse began in the last year of Gillard. After that collapse, GDP has continued to rise.

BTW... have a second think about the graph you showed. It shows a supposed DROP in GDP.    What do we call those events? RECESSIONS!!!!!  and yet... we have not had a recession or even gotten close.  Perhaps if you thought about the information you provide first you might realise when you got it wrong.

Well, they (the Liberals) did pretty much the same as Labor, they just waited for the Baby Boomer Demographics to kick in.

That means the number of Australians aged 65+ will increase by some 85% from 3.1 million to 5.7 million between 2011 and 2031.

Which means approximately an extra 130,000 Per year (on average) will come into retirement age!

So, the increased number of Baby Boomer Retirees will make the Unemployment rate look better than it actually is, until the next Great Recession hits, THEN THE REAL PICTURE WILL QUICKLY BECOME APPARENT!

No I am quite aware mining's ass has fallen out, however much like you refuse to acknowledge outside circumstances when anyone BUT the libs are in power, I thought I'd cover 1 eye for a day just to get your perspective.
Had Gillard been PM now, it would not be a factor in anyway shape or form.

It was not a commentary on the economy overall but YOUR blanket statement that it always rises under a Liberal government.
You'll also note that 2013 was our highest ever GDP, who do you thank for that, Gillard - Jan to Aug or Abbott - Oct to Dec?

Unemployment down, yay for the liberals.

What a total load of unmitigated clap trap.
Hiding unemployed through work for the dole, refusing the dole to people who have (in govco's eyes) too many liquid assets, etc etc.

Having been made redundant 10 months ago through my company going off shore, I can tell you that these "FACTS and STATS" are all doctored.

I am ineligible for the dole, because I have "Assets" that are considered above their "NEW" limits.
These new limits have affected the unemployed numbers, not the actual people who are unemployed.
I and many other Liquid Asset Rich people, are in fact UNEMPLOYED, we are looking for work, but because the work is not there we cannot find it.
We are, conveniently, not counted in these bull sh1t numbers because we are not claiming the dole.

What work there is, is part time, full time work is becoming scarcer and scarcer.
I look forward, should I score a job, at being paid at a much lower rate, simply because there is a glut of qualified people looking for work and because transitory work is all that is available.

These fabricated facts and manipulated stats are a slap in the face for working people and those desperately looking for work.
But there is one growth industry in Australia.
Government departments and sub departments are at an all time high.
Worthless bureaucrats manipulating data to fit an agenda, and trying so hard to maintain their worthless jobs.

Is the analysis of this showed the same reason it dropped the last time you posted this (about a month ago)?

the analysis was that there were few people participating in job search due to lack of jobs.

Or are we doing the lib thing - ignore any negatives associated with libs because "they don't exist, just like lib corruption"?

Ok I found a website analysing this.  I welcome but obviously won't happen for a lib supporter to refute the facts (but since they have no ability to do so, they will instead attack credibility instead):

The summary ABS Labour Force (seasonally adjusted) estimates for March 2016 are:
http://bilbo.economicoutlook.net/blog/?p=33338
Employment increased 26,100 (0.2 per cent) with full-time employment decreasing by 18,800 and part-time employment increasing by 34,900.
Unemployment decreased by 7,300 to 723,100.
The official unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.7 per cent.
The participation rate was unchanged at 64.9 per cent. This is well below its November 2010 peak (recent) of 65.8 per cent.
Aggregate monthly hours worked decreased 17.5 million hours (-1.1 per cent).
The quarterly ABS broad labour underutilisation estimates (the sum of unemployment and underemployment) for the February quarter were updated last month. Underemployment was at 8.4 per cent and total labour underutilisation rate was at 14.2 per cent. There were 1,051.2 thousand persons underemployed and a total of 1.839.3 thousand workers either unemployed or underemployed. The next quarterly release will be in the June 2016 publication.

Total (net) employment in March 2016 is estimated to have increased by 26,100 jobs. Full-time employment decreased 8,800, while part-time employment increased by 34,900.

This follows the total (net) employment change in February 2016 of 300 jobs. Prior to that there were two second consecutive month of negative growth.

The ABS said that:

Trend employment growth in Australia eased … In March 2016, the annual trend employment growth rate was 2.2 per cent, down from 2.6 per cent in December 2015 . That’s an increase of around 250,000 persons employed, compared with 300,000 persons.

I wonder just how much the new tightened requirements for getting the dole has contributed to this

I wonder why Govco don't actually use the real figures of people looking for work and not just those drawing the dole?

I wonder what the results would be if "Full time work" was a prerequisite for being employed, not just a couple of hours a week?

Guess Ill never know, because Govco cant tell the truth, they have to lie and fiddle to make the facts reflect what they want us to believe.

In a nut shell, yeas....with part time work counting as that if you do just one hour a week.

Good, hey?

Impossible. No award allows for less than a 3 hour shift.

I'm sure you are probably correct.  However, the political terminology/rhetoric is that you have part time work if  you work at least one hour a week.

..replaced by an increasing number of 'employed' who could be defined as working one hour a week... I note that full-time employment dropped but part-time rose... is that what you want for yourself, longie?  A part-time casual on $2.50 an hour?

.. every day in Ozpol is a day on the farm... a warm walk in the sun.... every meal a banquet and every pay cheque a fortune.... I LOVE OZPOL..

.. and the chance to put the wood to inanities daily..... something that I do so very well...... 8-)

Hold up there, Pilgrim... if you are on Social Security you can't be on Welfare....  welfare is going to a charity and getting a handout..... Social Security is a component of the overall tax system and since you pay taxes at every turn, is an Entitlement....

Get with the Team.....

Bit of pedantry there, wot?  Just replace welfare with whatever you reckon is the correct word.  The point remains the same.

Guys... I'll repeat:
"Well, any 'good news' is better than none - especially for a lib who is waiting for any straws to grasp."

For all the nitpicking about it, remember the same scrutiny should apply when lab gets back into government.  So do expect snide remarks back from lib supporters next time.

Nothing snide about pointing out facts, is there?

Absolutely not.

Longy calls it throwing a tantrum.

By the way, where is Longy? He disappeared after Smithy's second post.

I wonder if Maria's about to pop her head in. We haven't seen her for a while.

Unemployment down... AGAIN

This Liberal government is in its final death throes and they have not spent one single day of their miserable underperforming term with an unemployment rate lower than the day they came into office.

That is the relativism argument. Whitlam sure had some duds on the front bench and was naïve not to see what his opponents were planning. Even though he was dismissed and trumped at the ensuing election, the Fraser government turned out to be far worse no matter what metric one wishes to use.

After five pages that's normal around here. Anyway, the primary factor for the decline in unemployment has already been posted earlier in the thread with barely any notice.

Unemployment is slightly down simply because wages growth is near zero. In the end, just a symptom of declining productivity where lower costs of labour displaces capital. In case nobody has noticed, total factor productivity has been on the slippery slope for about 17 years now.

One day the penny will drop.

Maybe you're right about the cause of employment decline - but there are other causes as analysed by other people.
