Title: swear word filter Post by gandalf on Jun 18th, 2016 at 10:44am
Please note that FD himself suggested I post this here - I was happy to keep it between us. But sure, I'll let my views be known here...
I think the whole idea is utterly absurd and should be scrapped altogether. Especially for a board that was specifically set up in the interests of free speech. Personally I like indulging in a few expletives to emphasise my arguments, and I don't believe it detracts from the quality of my arguments. But does it even dissuade people from swearing? Of course not, everyone just finds ways of spelling it differently to avoid the filter. Besides, when you see the word 'smacking' or whatever euphemisms are used, obviously everyone knows what word it is really - thus one way or another, swearing is not avoided anyway. So for feerks sake, lets stop this shIIt and get rid of this stupid, moronic faarking filter! |

I removed some of the words from the swear word filter a few weeks back. There's only about half a dozen in there now. |

Leave the C word there.
No need to use that I reckon! |

In my opinion, everything has limits, including WHAT & HOW we say.
If the current limits in place on this site are relaxed any further, then this site will go down a similar road to FD's other site, that being PA, Which frankly leaves a lot to be desired! However, this is FD's site, so if he wants this site to go down the same path as PA, then that's his decision. That said, I will not entertain going any further down that path, whatsoever! |

I voted 'Keep it' for that exact reason. You give some people an inch, they will take a mile as you have seen with my 'imposter.' I'd toughen it up to make a clear statement of zero tolerance towards going down a primrose path to the almost empty but open fetid sewer that other place is. |

get rid of it. There isn't one word on there that people can't find ways around if they choose to.

I think some words should be out of bounds.
Rednecks C word suggestion being right, but otherwise I don't think it's needed. This isn't a kids site. |

Sure...but kids can access it. And if you reckon you have had enough of complaints about conduct here under the current Rules, expect an avalanche if you give people, like one I don't need to name, an inch. Further, the place will empty out, believe me. There are other sites Mr Hicks where no-one is subjected to crap as you propose. |

I am not voting. I will abide by any ruling, but I find the present policy ironic. F88K is banned, but bugger is perfectly acceptable. Reminds me of the time I heard a suburban grandmother admonishing an innocent little girl I would guess her own flesh and blood, "You little bugger." She also called the child "Bugger Lugs." You wonder why Australians grow up with such foul mouths? Its because they don't think about what they are saying.

For Marla to reach her unbridled full stride she needs all of those colourful Anglo-Saxon words. It's the least we can do for her as a regular ranter here.

n***** is banned, and there is a reasonable justification for that - racist white supremists might go googling for that very term, and then start running rampant on the forums they find where people are talking about it. You certainly wouldn't want your forum to become a magnet for such people. And yet, funnily enough Abo, boong and coon aren't banned - even though IMO they are just as offensive. |

It's not quite as simple as you are suggesting. Firstly let's assume everyone here is adult enough to put limits on their use of ugly words. If the filter is here because a tiny percentage have no control over their language - then I totally disagree with a filter. These cretins should simply be expelled from this forum as too immature be a member of it. I also believe there are those rare occasions when even the worst of the nasty words seems right and fitting even to the most restrained among us. If you treat people like small children, then they will take that as a cue to behave like small children. Shortly after WWII in the US, a program was started to reduce anger in young Negroes in the big city ghettoes. The juvenile courts sent them to a certain catholic priest in one of the southern States where he was in charge of the barracks and the training regimen there. One of the exercises he had them perform was designed to reduce latent hostility and aggression due to poor self-image. It was counter-intuitive. He would line up two rows of 10 boys facing each other, and then in turn, each row would hurl every sort of racist and other kind of abuse at the 'passive-recipient' row of Negro boys. Maybe 5 minutes from one row, and then it was the other group's turn. After several weeks of this, the words became almost meaningless, and the power vested in them had almost entirely dissipated with endless repetition. The moral of the story: "Suck it up and learn to deal with it without taxing your emotions". (Aquascoot will be along shortly to conclude this lecture and to ask for donations to help with our Outreach service that finds homes for feral brumbies). |

I think you mean that the "words became almost meaningless", rather than "meaningful", Herbie. Desensitising works for some people. However, for others, it works in reverse, making people more sensitive towards nasty words. Personally, there isn't much that makes my hair curl. Ten years in the Army saw to that. Most Australians have heard it all before, at least once, if not more often. I once worked for a Government department and we bought a new email filter appliance ("computer" to the lay person like you). I was tasked with implementing it to stop spam and I noticed that the filter included "bad language" options. I asked my boss whether we should turn them on. He suggested that would be a good idea. I shrugged my shoulders and followed instructions. All email ceased flowing in and out of the Department's servers within 48 hours and we received complaints that no one was getting any email. It seems that Australians routinely, even in official communications utilise much more robust language than our American cousins across the pond. I turned the filters off and email started to flow again. Even so, I shy away from using some words because I find them upsetting because I know how they upset my friends. I was taught to never use the "c" word. I was taught to never use the "f" word. I was taught to never call a person a derogatory name, such as the "n" word or "a" word, Herbie. As a consequence I never do. I might occasionally use the "f" word but I'll never use the "c" word. I'm just interested if you consider any words "taboo", Herbie. Do you? As for the expulsion of the expletive users, I have little problem with that, after they have been warned. If the fail to comply with the warning then they can be out on their arses for all I care. |

The 'c' word ... the 'n*****' word ... 'coon' ... 'faggots' ... words like that. You couldn't bring me a single person who has ever heard me say those words during the 54 years I've been in Australia. And I only used the word 'wog' twice when I was drunk at work during my whole working life. In real life I very rarely swear except to emphasise an emotional point in conversation with a fellow male - and then it depends on who I'm talking to. I don't swear with doctors and the like. Both my elder brothers never swore - ever. Zilch. Zero. And I never once heard my father or mother swear. I never swear at all in mixed company where women will overhear me. Every time an ethnic calls me a 'Pom', or refers to me as a 'Pom' - which is a contraction of 'Pommy bastard' - this gives me the right to answer in like kind with the term 'wog'. There is a difference between the terms 'Brit' and 'Pom' - and it's one of politeness on the one hand, and derision on the other. Any smartarse wog who pretends he doesn't understand that - is lying. |

If POMMY (Bastard) isn't an offensive term, then why should ethnics be offended by the term 'Wog'? I once had a couple of ethnics come to me in the workplace to ask me if they should be offended by the term 'Wog' - and I found myself hesitating. I often heard ethnics ironically calling each other 'wog'. When I arrived in Australia I was surprised to learn that it's okay to call someone a 'bastard' as a term of endearment - something that is totally unacceptable in the UK. |

When you presume to lecture me on the subject of Australian terminologies, please bear in mind that I was Out There and functioning in society long before you were a microscopic piece of spaghetti in your father's eye before he had met your mother. 'Bloody Yugoslav' was a set piece that always went together. I agree that 'Pommy' only very rarely now carries with it the binary 'Pommy bastard', but even so the word 'Pom' or 'Pommy' carries with it connotations of derision and contempt to a greater or lesser degree depending on the context. I'd be interested in hearing other's opinion on this. Don't be afraid to contradict me if you believe meanings have shifted over the years. |
