A 19-year-old man who lunged for a police officer's gun in a bid to shoot Donald Trump told authorities he expected to be killed in the attempt.

Michael Sandford, who is believed to be a British expat, has been charged for the attempted killing in Las Vegas on July 18.

According to a complaint filed in US District Court in Nevada, Mr Sandford understood he would only be able to fire one or two rounds at the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and expected to be killed by police.




Sandford allegedly told a Secret Service agent after his arrest that he had driven from California to Las Vegas "to kill Trump," and had been to a range a day earlier to learn to shoot as he had never fired a gun before.

Sandford claimed he had been planning to attempt to kill Trump for about a year but decided to act on this occasion because he finally felt "confident," the complaint read.

The 19-year-old stated that if he were on the street tomorrow, "he would try this again".

Sandford, who holds a British driver's license, told investigators he had purchased tickets for a rally in Phoenix where he "would try again to kill Trump" in the event his plan in Las Vegas failed.

Officials would not confirm Sandford's nationality saying only that he had told investigators he had been in the United States for about 18 months, and had lived in Hoboken, New Jersey, before traveling to California.

I'm not suggesting a rightie would, maybe its a nutcase with no political affiliation who just wants to be famous and Trump happened to be closer than Clinton.

E.g. look at John Hinckley Jr. Tried to shoot Reagen, but had no political affiliation, just wanted to impress Jodie Foster.

I am surprised it has taken this long.

This isn't surprising. There's death threats toward Trump all over the net. Expect more attempts.
