Anthony Mundine has called on all players at this weekend's NRL and AFL grand finals to boycott the Australian national anthem.

The former rugby league star turned boxer shared a video via social media urging people to make a stand at ANZ Stadium and the MCG in support of the Indigenous community.

The campaign, driven by Australian pop culture website Junkee, follows the lead of San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players who have knelt during the US anthem to protest against racial inequality and injustice.

'Been saying this for years!' Mundine posted on Facebook on Thursday.

'The anthem was written in late 1700s where blackfullas (sic) were considered fauna (animals) advance Australia fair as in white not fair as in fair go ...

'All players aboriginal non aboriginal should boycott the anthem start changing Australia's ignorant mentality...lets move forward together yo.'

Last week, former league players Larry Corowa and Joe Williams also called on Indigenous players in Sunday's NRL decider to not stand for the anthem.

'Imagine if a couple of guys did it on grand final day - what a powerful message it would send to white Australia,' Williams told Rugby League Week.

'It would bring all the racism that's in the closet to the surface - the racism we have to put up with every day. The way we are treated in shops, the way people look at us on the street and the way the government treats us.

'It's time it stopped. And our footballers are role models and the ideal ones to bring about change.'

The Murri players did not boycott the NA during the semis I doubt they will in the finals

Shops : Anybody who knows our jails are packed full with Abos would 'keep an eye on them fellas' while they are 'browsing' in your shop.

Streets : They're looked at in the streets because of the racket they make - which is nearly all the time.

Any protest will do nothing but further drive ordinary Australians against them.

Do you notice how all these people who go on about racism and the poor treatment white people mete out to Aborigines, never have the courage of their convictions and leave Australia for good - after handing back all their material possessions to the natives of course. No, they are quite happy to live here and enjoy all the fruits of the white exploitation while criticising those who made their lifestyle possible.

Don't know where that came from but it is awful hard to believe.

He was a good versatile first grade player but he was never the best in any position he played. There were always several players in front of him for rep positions etc.

The term White Australia policy comprises various historical policies that effectively barred people of non-European descent from immigrating to Australia. Soon after Australia became a federation it passed the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901. The passage of this bill is considered the commencement of the White Australia Policy as Australian government policy. Subsequent acts further strengthened the policy up to the start of the Second World War.[4] These policies effectively allowed for British migrants to be preferred over all others through the first four decades of the 20th century. During the Second World War, Prime Minister John Curtin reinforced the policy, saying "This country shall remain forever the home of the descendants of those people who came here in peace in order to establish in the South Seas an outpost of the British race."[3]

The policy was dismantled in stages by successive governments after the conclusion of the Second World War, with the encouragement of first non-British, non-white immigration, allowing for a large multi-ethnic post-war program of immigration. In 1975 the Whitlam Government passed the Racial Discrimination Act, which made racially based selection criteria unlawful. A national apology was belatedly given in 2008 by the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. This moral poltroon argued 'guilt is not hereditary'.

Aboriginal life expectancy is the world's worst. Aborigines are disproportionally imprisoned and hospitalized. As with American and Canadian Indigenous nations, Aboriginal communities are ravaged by drugs and alcohol including solvent abuse i.e. "petrol and glue sniffing". Suicide among the Aboriginal communities, particularly in remote areas is epidemic.
