Title: US President Exexutuve Orders
Post by Sprintcyclist on Jan 29th, 2017 at 12:37pm

Quote:
...........United States presidents issue executive orders to help officers and agencies of the executive branch manage the operations within the federal government itself.
Executive orders have the full force of law when they take authority from a legislative power which grants its power directly to the Executive by the Constitution, or are made pursuant to Acts of Congress that explicitly delegate to the President some degree of discretionary power (delegated legislation).[1]

Like both legislative statutes and regulations promulgated by government agencies, executive orders are subject to judicial review, and may be struck down if deemed by the courts to be unsupported by statute or the Constitution. Major policy initiatives require approval by the legislative branch, but executive orders have significant influence over the internal affairs of government, deciding how and to what degree legislation will be enforced, dealing with emergencies, waging wars, and in general fine-tuning policy choices in the implementation of broad statutes............

I am uncomfortable with Executive Orders.
It's too much power at the stroke of a pen by one person.

I would prefer if most changes go through the congress or the equivalent of our parliament.

Sure, use executive orders at times of urgency.
eg, if being attacked overnight, outbreak of some weird disease.

For situations that have not changed rapidly or do not pose an immediate threat, go through the normal channels.

Good to hear that.

I dislike the 'one man bands.'

The (mis)use of executive orders is exactly what you'd expect from Trump...

As a malignant narcissist, the delusion of ruling by decree (like an autocrat) would be irresistible to Trump...

Never mind the legal mess that will follow as Congress and the judiciary work to overturn and invalidate them one by one, Trump will deflect blame for them towards 'the people'...

But, as he didn't win the popular vote, his likely claim that he's enacting the 'will of the people' by executive order will be fatally flawed...

that's one of the reasons I dislike Executive Orders.

At the drop of a hat, with no consultation LOTS of other people have more work to do.

Be it right or wrong, they have more work to do.

And you can expect many more of them (not least because the most recent 2 term presidents have issued nearly 300 each)...

But when the motive for their issuance is purely cynically self-aggrandising, they reveal to the American people what their president really thinks of the democratic process.

So you want to ignore Obama's failings and concentrate on Trump? Go right ahead. ;)

You do realise the thread is about Executive Orders, and not the person's doing it?

You can pretend that if you want. It is all rather obviously about Trumps recent orders - specifically the muslim ban.

Which may or may not come to pass.

So why did Obama bypass Congress? You left that bit out.

He didnt do anything unconstitutional despite your desperate attempt to defend Trumps actions which have literally refused entry to the USA by people who already have permanent residence!

I dislike the concept of executive orders.
Same as when Obama was giving them out.

I agree with their content, not with the method.
